You too can learn how to handicap the horses! How? Read handicapping books written by professionals! There are many, many books available, and I suggest you read as many as you can. I collect them. I have quite a few over the 30+ years I’ve been handicapping, and I’ve kept them all.

Learning how to handicap is incredibly important, but it’s equally important to learn how to track your wagering. You’ll need a wagering journal coupled with the discipline to write down your bets every day, and then track your weekly/monthly ROI.

Studying trainers is not a popular angle for Christian Blake. But I’ve often thought that a handicapper could make a living off one or two trainers. If you study them enough, you can find out when they’re serious about winning a race, and when they’re not. Everyone has patterns, unavoidable habits. Learn their habits and you’ll spot their winners before the trainer does. For me though, that’s just too much work. I handicap each horse’s most recent start, and that’s it. Nothing more. It works for me.

If being correct is all that you want when it comes to handicapping, I suggest you just invest your time in tournaments. If you want a positive ROI and cash flow when it comes to handicapping, I suggest you play long shots after you’ve learned how to spot them.

Note, notes and more notes. Your notes should explain why you selected a particular horse over another, and those notes should convey that information clearly and concisely, even five years from now. If you aren’t interested in taking notes, then I say you aren’t very serious about handicapping, and you’re probably more of a Weekend Warrior than a serious player. There’s nothing wrong with that, but just realize that when you put your money into the tote machine and back a horse based on Handicapping 101, there’s a dozen guys betting against you that are far more serious about the game, and they have every intention of cashing their ticket and making yours worthless.

I don’t view horse racing as gambling. To me, it’s math, probabilities and statistics. Nothing more. Pulling the lever on a slot machine…now that’s gambling. Although I have frequented race books for many, many years, I never played slots or even table games when I walked through a casino to get to the sports book. Not too long ago (maybe 10 years or so), I went to the cashier inside a casino and asked for change to play slots. The cashier was confused as to what I wanted. I explained that I needed a bucket and a bunch of quarters to play the quarter slots. The cashier laughed and said they hadn’t used buckets and actual quarters in many, many years. The teller explained that slot machines can take your money directly, and there are no more buckets and coins used. The machine spits out a voucher when you decide to walk away from it to play something else. That shows you how much I play slots. I might be an expert when it comes to horse racing, but obviously I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to slot machines. Oh well.  

Read as many handicapping books as you can. Collect them!

Jockeys will deliberately lose races. It happens more often than you realize. If you watch enough race replays, you’ll start to recognize the types of posturing a jockey will make when they are deliberately slowing a horse or simply impeding its forward progress. I’ve never mentioned this inside any of my books or on any of my blogs/websites, but I once saw a very famous jockey deliberately lose two races in a row on the same horse. The horse dropped in class multiple times as a result, went off at extremely high odds for its third consecutive start, and that’s when the jockey rode properly and ended up in Place on a massive long shot. The jockey’s name? Laffit Pincay Jr.

It’s very rare when I play Pick 5s or even Pick 4s. In the past, I would play them when I saw a very obvious selection of horses that should easily win their respective races. Quite a few times in my life I’ve hit Pick 4s and Pick 5s with straight wagering. That means only 1 selection per race. I’ve never hit a Pick 6 or even a Place Pick 9 (old wager that’s not available any more). These days, I don’t bother with those types of wagers. In my opinion, you might as well toss your money into a trash can or donate it to a charity instead of wagering on those types of bets. It's better to play wagers with higher odds of success, and to include long shots in those wagers.

Tracking your wagers will make you a better handicapper and gambler. I guarantee it. You’ll need to track your wagers and keep excellent notes as to why/how you selected those wagers.

If you’ve never watched horse racing from other countries, I highly encourage it. You’ll quickly realize that USA racetracks are not nearly as popular as some of the foreign race tracks, especially those in Japan and Hong Kong. Just do a search for Happy Valley Racecourse and marvel at the endless photos online of the grandstands full of spectators. Outside of the Kentucky Derby, there’s no USA race track that gets that many people in attendance.

Want to be a better handicapper? Read this handicapping book to learn a few tricks for spotting potential long shot winners.

I’ve heard that a number of other countries do not tax horse racing gambling profits. That would be wonderful if the USA established similar tax laws, but I won’t hold my breath. In the meantime, your best solution is to track your wagers – every single one – in a log book designed specifically for horse racing.

If you are going to wager straight Win bets, you’ll need to figure out your win rate. Do you pick winners 10% of the time? If so, then you need to restrict your wagering to betting on horses at 10/1+ odds. Otherwise, you won’t even break even, and your bankroll will dimmish rather quickly. Wagering online seems to be the way of the future, and wagering at the track is an antiquated method for placing bets. Near as I can tell, online wagering seems to outperform wagering at any of the casino sports books. Personally, I prefer wagering at the race track. The tote machines allow a horse player to make their bets anonymously and without scrutiny/questions from a live teller. Just insert a voucher into a machine and start entering wagers. You won’t hear the tote machine asking annoying questions or second-guessing your handicapping. Not to mention, the tote machines are faster. I can input and print tickets much faster than I can having to relay my wagers to any teller at a sports book. And, like I mentioned above, if you can input your own tickets, you can avoid questions from curious/opinionated ticket writers. The benefit of online wagering is that you get a record of every wager you’ve made in your account. It’s easy to see and print every bet, which makes establishing your ROI a bit easier, and makes for filing taxes a bit easier as well. The primary drawback to online wagering is that rebates (of any type) are almost non-existent with online wagering accounts. The typical profit margin for any entity carrying the signal for a race track is 15% of their daily volume. I don’t know of any online wagering accounts that kickback any piece of that 15%. Nevada Casinos, on the other hand, will kickback quite a bit in cash and perks to horse players in their sports book. One such casino that I know of will rebate almost 10% of your wagering volume. This is available in cash rebate, food/buffet vouchers, free hotel rooms, spending credit in the casino, etc.
