02/07/15 in praise of Lungfish album "Sound in Time"
After a day of engaging in interviews about the Baltimore music and arts underground, I found myself with a sudden urge to listen to Lungfish’s 1996 album Sound in Time. And so I did.
When the album was initially released and the band began performing the new material, I was having trouble. Lungfish had a new member (bassist Sean Meadows) and a new trajectory. The group’s 1993 album Rainbows from Atoms was a cherished favorite and I definitely dug on 1994’s Pass and Stow, although others did not. I got a cassette copy for free off a disappointed friend.
It is an old scene joke that Lungfish played one song over and over.I tend to disagree, and especially felt that the tune had changed in 1996.

Lungfish ‘Nothing Is Easy’
I’m fairly sure I never heard this before today, when I saw it was the top Lungfish track on Spotify. I originally bought Talking Songs for Walking as a track-by-track download, and to for thriftiness’ sake I left off the extra six EP tracks that were subsequently added on to the original LP, to form the CD reissue and digital version - and also because I’m a formalist who likes to limit what I’m listening to (especially in the case of hardcore/post-hardcore) to its original temporal bounds, arbitrary enough as they may be. Plus, 70 minutes of loud-fast rules (or loud-slowed-down-a-good-deal experimental) is often not really what I want, you know?
This is interesting to me because I’m used to going to this album as the origin point of Lungfish’s repetitive groove, which in some ways is still by far my favourite iteration; but actually these tracks go further back, when they sounded like a more ordinary Dischord post-hardcore band. A little bit Fugazi, a little bit (as it were) Fuel. The transitions and dynamics are a little bit more jejune, lighter than the first-pass monumentalism of Talking Songs for Walking. Its five-minute running time contains within it the chorus line of the briefer, weightier, more locked-down 'My Fool Heart’ - with a striking amount of space and air around it.
