Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)

ACTH is a study of the anterior pituitary gland function, part of a complex feedback mechanism for cortisol production.

ACTH levels exhibit diurnal variations, with the highest levels being from 4AM to 8AM and lowest being at 9PM (with normal sleep patterns). This variation is lost when the pituitary gland and adrenal gland is affected by neoplasm.

Patients with any of the following conditions can be found to have elevated levels of ACTH: Primary Adrenal Insufficiency, Cushing's Disease, Stress, Adrenogenital Syndrome.

Patients with any of the following conditions can be found to have decreased levels of ACTH: Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency, Cushing's Disease, Hypopituitarism.

Interfering drugs include: Estrogens, Insulin, Ethanol, Vasopressin.

Acid Phosphatase

Chemistry Test - Red Top Tube - No Fasting Required.

Acid Phosphatase can be found in many tissues; like the liver, RBCs, bone marrow, with the highest concentration being found in the prostate gland.

Typically used in rape cases as seminal fluid contains a high concentration of Acid Phosphatase. It is also used in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Elevated levels can be found in patients with recent rectal stimulation, within 48 hours of blood draw, and hemolysis of sample.

Patients with any of the following conditions are found to have elevated levels of Acid phosphatase: prostatic carcinoma, prostatitis, Paget's disease, and sickle cell crisis.

Interfering drugs include: Androgens, Alglucerase, Oxalates, Alcohol, and Heparin.
