Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)

ACTH is a study of the anterior pituitary gland function, part of a complex feedback mechanism for cortisol production.
ACTH levels exhibit diurnal variations, with the highest levels being from 4AM to 8AM and lowest being at 9PM (with normal sleep patterns). This variation is lost when the pituitary gland and adrenal gland is affected by neoplasm.
Patients with any of the following conditions can be found to have elevated levels of ACTH: Primary Adrenal Insufficiency, Cushing's Disease, Stress, Adrenogenital Syndrome.
Patients with any of the following conditions can be found to have decreased levels of ACTH: Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency, Cushing's Disease, Hypopituitarism.
Interfering drugs include: Estrogens, Insulin, Ethanol, Vasopressin.
Acid Phosphatase
Chemistry Test - Red Top Tube - No Fasting Required.
Acid Phosphatase can be found in many tissues; like the liver, RBCs, bone marrow, with the highest concentration being found in the prostate gland.
Typically used in rape cases as seminal fluid contains a high concentration of Acid Phosphatase. It is also used in the diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Elevated levels can be found in patients with recent rectal stimulation, within 48 hours of blood draw, and hemolysis of sample.
Patients with any of the following conditions are found to have elevated levels of Acid phosphatase: prostatic carcinoma, prostatitis, Paget's disease, and sickle cell crisis.
Interfering drugs include: Androgens, Alglucerase, Oxalates, Alcohol, and Heparin.
Ya’ll it’s Lab Week so if you work in a hospital or whatever be good to your lab people. Stop blaming us for your hemolyzed samples and label your damn tubes. Also, tell us how much you value us because you aren’t making a damn diagnosis without us.
The thing about doing med school in 27 months is that you have no time to waste. So we started off the first day of clinical lab drawing each other's blood. 💉💉💉

Today
I had a lab on intramuscular and subcutaneous injections today. I was pretty excited about it but then it happened. I was in the process of giving my mannequin an intramuscular injection when instead I ended up giving myself a needle stick injury. I almost didn't feel it and I had to take my gloves off to check that yes bleeding finger confirmed. I ended up spending a fair bit of time submitting an incident report. I was the only person in my lab who ended up with a needle stick injury, that’s what I get for being confident and excited ha!
