The money should be invested in child development because shaping the youth well will result in a better outcome for the community in the later generations of adults. It should go to a long term solution because short term solutions won’t solve long term problems. Irrelevant information was the mentioning of local businesses and stores. All other information is relevant to the state of the neighborhood. Other information that could be needed to solve this problem is the estimated income of households. It should go to multiple interventions to result in a better overall outcome for the neighborhood. The proposal wouldn’t change much, we would just spread it through different problems rather than focusing solely on youth development.

CHAPTER 13

This week’s fieldwork assignment is on migration, more specifically why certain people migrate. There are a number of reasons a person might migrate. Migration is "the movement of a species from one area to another area." The people who migrate from one location to another are called immigrants. Our fieldwork assignment was to interview a person who has migrated and to gain an understanding of the trials and tribulation that goes into migration. I was denied 3 times, by 3 different people because of the fear of their story getting out. I was able to convince a family friend but for privacy purposes, personal details and names have been altered.

Luz got pregnant by her husband, after months of stressing about preparations and realizing her money would be stretched too thin she lost the baby due to stress. She never wanted to feel this pain again and decided she would do whatever she had to, to get to America and give her child, whenever she did decide to try again, an easier life than what she grew up with in Bolivia. She felt pulled to America, because but she wanted to give her child the greatest amount of opportunities as the world could afford them. Nothing was too drastic, she was willing to risk everything for her her future, for her family's future. She heard about Indians getting into America illegally through the desert and decided she would exhaust all legal options before turning to the extremes.

Luckily for her after about 2 years she was chosen from the lottery for a green card and her husband was able to receive one as well. She was ecstatic but knew that more challenges would lie ahead with finding work, a place to stay, etc. She had family friends who also immigrated into America and they offered her refugee in Philly. She searched and searched for a job for months and felt like a burden because she wasn't able to contribute. Her husband had to pick up most of the slack because he was able to find a job easily doing house work. She eventually was able to find a job at a daycare and has been working there the past 15 years. She and her husband were able to buy a home and have a son who they remind daily of their own culture in Bolivia.

Marxists suggest the news agenda is heavily interests by those with power in capitalist societies and that the content of the news reflects

Karl Marx's Theory, also known as marxism, originally consisted of three related ideas: a philosophical anthropology, a theory of history, and an economic and political program. Marx condemned capitalism as a system that alienates the masses. His reasoning was workers produce things for the market, and market forces. People are required to work for capitalists who have full control over the means of production and maintain power in the workplace. Marx argued that there were two social classes: the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. And In the end, working becomes degrading and people themselves become objects based on profit considerations, with little to no concern for the actual person. Marx's main argument is that class is determined by economic factors alone.

Max Weber's theory argues that social stratification cannot be defined solely in terms of class and the economic factors which affect class relationships. Max Weber formed a three component theory of stratification in which social difference is determined by class, status, and power. Weber argued that power can take a number of different forms. Power can be shown in the social order through their status, in the economic order through their class, and in the political order through their party. Therefore, class, status and party are each aspects of the distribution of power within a community.

For Pierre Bourdieu, cultural capital could be split into three categories: embodied, objectified, and institutionalised. Bourdieu's theory of class revolves around capital and habitus. Capital and habitus are two key elements in educational reproduction. Capital includes participation in cultural activities and cultural material resources, and habitus focuses on subjective attitudes and dispositions.

How long has your family lived in this country? My family has been in this country for as long as anyone in my family can remember. They aren't too sure where we came from or when. Has your family embraced American Nationalism? My family has embraced American Culture and nationalism because it's all that we know. I'm not sure what the culture is where I'm from because as perviously stated I don't know where I'm from. However, it is something that I'm curious about. I'm curious to know my ancestry and true nationality which is why after talking about this assignment with my family we will try to figure it out through ancestry or 23andme.

White Privilege

white privilege is the benefits or "privileges" that society hands to white people. white privilege can be so may things. it could be be having the privilege to be paid more for the same job as someone who is not white, being favored by authorities, having the privilege to be completely ignorant to the struggles of other races, having the privilege to learn bout their race in school, being overly represented in books, etc

systemic racism is a form of racism that is implanted into laws and regulations. it causes blatant discrimination in areas such as employment, criminal justice, education, etc.

3. Internalized racial inferiority

Internalized racial inferiority is a multi-generational socialization process that teaches people of color to believe, accept, live and/or act out negative societal definitions of self

internalized racial superiority is a multi generational socialization process that teaches white people to believe, accept and or live superior societal definitions of self

5. Oppression

oppression is malicious or unjust treatment or exercise of power, ranging from hurtful remarks made in ignorance to insults, threats, and physical violence, often by governmental authority.

6. Cultural racism

cultural racism is a lack of introspection and aversion to self-criticism. it is people dividing the world based on cultural differences between ethnic or racial groups.

The things that I have describes are from my room at home so I dont have a picture, but from the list I thought that I would've considered way more of these things wants but when I actually started to think about it, I think I confused myself a bit. Like with smell goods for an example, I couldn't decide between want and need because I know WANTING to smell good is a want but at the same time I feel like my skin NEEDS to be moisturized. Another example is bed sheets, I want bed sheets so that I can sleep comfortably, but then I think well how can I sleep on a bed without sheets and covers, I need that. So I feel it's a bit of a mix between the two. Lastly, electronics.. I feel if this question would've been asked a couple years ago the answer would've definitely been want, but now it's a mix for me because you need electronics to communicate with friends and teachers, and most of the time even complete homework now but I still have the nagging in the back of my head that it's just a want and consumer culture has convinced me that I need it. I definitely think I play a huge part in consumer culture because I find myself constantly scrolling on amazon and in target pointlessly buying things.

What is the history of the item? The Cheez-It company was formed in early 1907. Cheez-It’s were first introduced in 1921 by Green and Green Company and capitulated a loyal fan base. On March 31, 1921, the Green company produced Cheez-It crackers, which would go on to become its most popular legacy. The company specialized in many different kinds of crackers, such as Edgemont, Dayton, and Flag crackers. However, the Cheez-It crackers quickly became its most popular and best seller. 

Where was your item made or manufactured? In the 1870s, while living on the barren plains of North Dakota, Dayton natives J.W. and Weston Green often longed for a taste of home. “In those days food supplies were both expensive and scarce in that region,” wrote the Dayton Journal Herald in its October 31, 1907, edition, “and the father and son regularly sent back to their old home city, Dayton[,] for those necessities that could not be obtained there.
