#peoplesclimatemarch thoughts and reflections
I marched with family members from NYC, Westchester County, Maryland and Massachusetts.
It was the youngest’s first march. The oldest marched in Selma, on the Mall with MLK Jr., and she walked more than anyone else. She also commented a lot about how young and energetic the crowd is in NYC, how many different groups were there, and how great it was to see the energy out on the street.
I saw four colleagues in person. Five more colleagues were tweeting from their spots in the march. My workplace cares.
We saw a girl and her mom on the MetroNorth train at 10 am on the way in to the city, then on the subway, then at Lincoln Center getting ready to march. Finally, we saw them at 6 pm walking home. They liked our shirts. We liked their signs.
Everyone helped me collect our favorite slogans from signs we saw:
- You owe us a world as good as the one you got
- System change not climate change
- There is no Planet B
- Planet Earth has a right to life
- We raced to the moon, let’s race to clean energy
- Join the world’s biggest food fight
- Planet, People, Peace, over Profit
- Leave science to the scientists
- This poster was Up-Cycled
- Renewable is do-able
- Change the system not the climate
- Choose love over fear
- When global climate is under attack, what do you do? Stand up! Fight back!
- This is what democracy looks like
One of my favorite, moving moments was the pause in remembrance of all those lost. To have a moment of silence - as silent as thousands of people in the middle of New York City can get - was powerful. We were on Sixth Ave, past Radio City Music Hall. It was followed by the most amazing roar. The roar to end the silence flowed up to us from Central Park. It was like a wave, crashing down and we all joined in at the top of our lungs.
Hey world leaders… Your turn.
