hayoung adored her nephews; they brought her so much happiness. she clearly remembered how they felt in her arms when she first carried them as a baby. how she played with them so that they wouldn’t cry; she loved them like her own. she was constantly babied by everyone around her from her parents to her brother and now her in-laws but it felt so nice for her to be taking care of someone. sometimes she would think of her nephews as her younger brothers, matching their playfulness.

the youngest kim always tried to find time to visit her older brother’s estate just to check up on her nephews and also her beloved sister-in-law especially now after the tragic events that had happened— also it was a good excuse to get out of the house. she had lost sooah in the crowd when commotion happened and havent heard news of her. she was sure that her sister-in-law was okay but hayoung needed to calm the unsettling feeling inside her. 

she almost bolted out of her palanquin when they arrived, too excited. her maids were having a hard time keeping up with her, telling her to please slow down but hayoung couldn’t wait to see her nephews. “hyunsoo-ah! chanyeol-ah!” the aunt squealed opening her arms wide and hugging them tightly. “aigoo look how much you’ve grown! did you miss auntie? because auntie missed you very much.” she cooed, pacing kisses all over their faces. she lit up even more at the sight of sooah throwing her arms over her sister in law. “thank heavens you are alright! i haven’t heard from you! i was so worried so i came to visit. mother wanted to come along but i told her not to. she’s just going to keep interrupting us,” giggling as she whispered to her, shaking her head. “— also, i brought confectionaries. should we go and enjoy them?”

Sooah had received the news of the visit of the youngest Kim as soon as the palanquin arrived at her doorstep, after thanking the servant, she walked while her kids rushed to meet with their beloved Hayoung. Sooah looked at the interactions between the pair of kids and their aunt with a smile growing on her face while her hand went to her belly in reflex, soon this scene will have more laughter. Those thoughts made the woman remember that she had yet to give the news to her sister in law.

Laughter and giggles could be heard from the interaction and even some playful complains here and there making the whole scene that was unfolding in front of her perfect, only missing her husband for it to be the actual perfection. Sooah laughed at her actions before hugging her close as well. To her Hayoung was like a younger sister of her own blood so it was a relief to see her save and sound from the terrible night they had lived.

“Oh my dear Hayoung, I apologize for worrying you so much but you see I am in no state to leave the estate for some time.” She spoke while giving her a smile, looking at her to see her reaction, to see how long it would take her to guess what she was trying to say. Those news were her ray of sunshine in this dark moment. Sooah laughed once again while linking their arms together. “Please tell her she is more than welcome to visit any time she seems fit.” It was her mother in law after all, she couldn’t not see her. “But we should enjoy our time together without interruptions today.” She smiled before nodding “Oh dear, you are so sweet, come inside.” She spoke while pulling her gently towards the place she had been.

It had been ages since Seungyeon had visited her second sister in Sooah’s estate, the guilt of not being there for her sibling when the Red Wedding had started and then ended in chaos threatening to overwhelm her with distress and worry.

Was she alright? Was both her nephews quite alright? She had heard the news of her sister being pregnant again–and while that was some terrific news to hear, Seungyeon couldn’t help but be jealous of the freedom that her sister seemed to have.

It always had been that way since they were young. Or younger. Sunjung and Sooah were both exemplary daughters, something that Seungyeon was very clearly–not, with her free spirit and penchant for mischief. Her sisters would earn the praise of the masses and glory for being the beautiful wives that they were meant to be, with word flying around, saying that all noble women should perhaps aim to be like Commander Bae’s two older daughters.

Never the youngest–that was the whisper that Seungyeon instinctively knew most spoke under their breaths while looking at her. Plain as she may be as compared to her two older siblings, people saw her more as a naughty child, ill-disciplined with her free nature and penchant for reading and writing. 

Thankfully, they knew nothing about her taking up swordplay, or else all hell might have broken loose.

Seungyeon stepped gingerly over the threshold of her brother-in-law’s estate, eyes flickering slightly as she shifted in her hanbok, fingers clutching the fabric of her skirt rather tightly.

She had been rather jittery ever since coming out from being isolated in her private rooms by their father, the news that he wanted to marry her off coming down like a vicious hammer to her head and her heart.

For once–the free spirited Seungyeon was utterly at a loss of what to do, and it clearly showed in the blank look gracing her delicate features as she moved slowly through the estate, peering around quietly for her favourite sister, unlike her usual self, who would simply hitch up her skirts and barrel into the grounds, shouting for Sooah from a distance.

She was rather sure of the fact that her sister had been informed of the reason behind her confinement by their father, and braced herself slightly for yet another possible lecture to her ears from another family member.

Sooah was notified of her sisters presence in her home, to wich the woman answered with a smile and a thanks to the servant who brought the news to her, turning to look at the maid that had been with her since her marriage the young woman asked for her help to stand up. Though she was happy to be pregnant once again, the lack of being able to do things on her own was something that didn’t make the woman all to happy especially since it was small things like standing up but still she kept quiet and let the maid to what she had done during the previous two pregnancies.

She only had to take one look at her younger sister to know that she wasn’t well, and even if she wanted to scold her for not thinking before acting, she bit her tongue and chose to have a gentler way with her. She needed that the most right now. Sooah approached her with a smile on her face. “Seungyeon-ie, what a surprise to find you here.” Though she had expected her visit ever since her father had spoke to her about his plans towards her sister, even if Sooah had tried to convince him otherwise even to the point they started arguing over the matter the vice commander was firm on his order and there was nothing Sooah could do since she was not even living longer on his state.

“Come with me” She offered her sister her hand before she started strolling on her gardens. “I’m sorry I couldn’t do more” Sooah apologized to her in a quiet voice.

“ i hope it will be a better year.”

Seollal was here again, and though it was mostly a happy time for Sooah since she got to spend time with her family and friends, the woman joyful look became a dark look in her eyes as she heard such words, during the recent events the country lost important people such as the princess and some head of the families but that wasn’t that had the girl looking so grim at such words but the fact that she had lost her beloved uncle during those times too. 

Composing herself the woman looked at Dongho and with a small smile she spoke such words that were trully in her heart “I hope so too.” She didn’t want to feel such sadness and rage again. “Let’s pray this year will be gentler on all us...”

Sooah loved spending time with the lovely Hayoung, though she became her sister after the marriage, Sooah had always thought of her as if she was linked to her by blood, for she loved her with the same intensity as her true sisters and even addressed her as the youngest sister she had. It was clear to anyone how fond the woman was of her and the soft spot she had for the girl was more than obvious specially in times like this. A bright smile decorated her features as she looked at the youngest Kim’s who spoke about some gift she had gotten for her.

Sooah didn’t really mind what the gift was but she loved it and holded it dearly for who had given it to her. “Oh my lovely girl it is lovely. Thank you so much” She spoke while taking the youngest girl hand in hers before giving it a small squeeze. “Not being traditional only makes it more special”

Laughter fell from her mouth as she heard her best friends words, gosh how much she missed hanging out with her on regular basis though everything changed when she got married, Sooah was happy with the fact that no matter how much time passed or how they changed their friendship would always stay the same, pure and honest with a little bit of teasing here and there that would bring a note of playfullness in their lifes. 

“Oh not even my kids are as picky eaters as you my dear Mishil” She spoke with a teasing smile on her features, Sooah knew that her friend disliked that food and she only offered it to her for the sake of making the joke, before laughing and shaking her head. “But of course I already came prepared so I made this for you” She smiled gently this time, a tender look on her face as she started at her closest friend “Your favorite” Because Mishil deserved to be spolied with things she loved.

「 Unexpected News 」

He blinks rapidly as he lets as the news sinks in. They were not planning for another child, although a rather modern concept or way of thinking to plan for a blessing given by the gods and blessed by their ancestors. Hyunshik had no inkling whatsoever that his wife would be expecting, the senior officer felt a sense of pride and intense love grow even more for his wife. Which he did not think would be an occurrence at all for how deeply he already feels for her. But as always, she surprises him. 

Although his gaze was kept firmly at his wife’s warm honey gaze, he listens attentively at the doctor’s informative instructions. ‘I shall provide Lady Sooah’s lady-in-waiting a list of food and a set of instructions that are suitable for Lady Sooah during this time.’ Hyunshik lets out a solid “Yes, thank you, doctor.” But does not see the man out, Hyunshik was sure that the doctor was smart enough to give him and his wife some well-deserved privacy. As the young father quickly meets his wife in the middle and gather her up in his arms. 

Whispering with familiar intimacy, “You never cease to amaze me, my Sooah.” He leans down, capturing her lips in a  gentle yet promising kiss. With her in his embrace, pressed up flushed against him and with the thought of their family growing further. Hyunshik could positively explode with pride. Nipping his wife’s lower lip, he continues to say “We must tell the boys,” softly giving her a small chaste kiss as he pulls away. “You’re truly wonderful, wife. Tell me, does this news pleases you much like it brings me joy?” 

Sooah listens to the doctor’s words carefully, the smile that decorated her features was only getting brighter by each second and her eyes could light up the whole sky with how they were shining from happiness, from love, to the baby in her and to the man who owned her heart. Her eyes only moved away from him for a second as she sees the doctor make his way out of the room before she returns her soft gaze to him, 

Those words made the young woman’s heart flutter, they had been married for a few years already but he could still get such reactions of her with only his words. It was a beautiful and perfect picture, with her on his arms, holding her close there was nothing Sooah couldn’t do. A sweet smile grew on her lips as his warm ones came in contact with hers on a gentle but filled with love kiss. and then a second kiss, both too short for her liking but still smiled brightly at his words before nodding happily “They will be so happy with the news” Just like them were. At his question Sooah took his hand in hers, stroking it gently before leaving a kiss over his knuckles “I am” She said, words wouldn’t do justice to how overjoyed the woman was by the news. “I must have done something great in my other life to be so blessed in this one...I’ve got you, our kids and now this little one who is coming...”

dalhayoung‌:of wedding festivities

“indeed.” she giggled. “i would rather spend the evening with you than with mother. where’s the fun in that? — oh please don’t tell her, she tends to be overly dramatic these days,” rolling her eyes playfully, linking her arm with her sister-in-law. when her older brother married sooah, hayoung was overjoyed having grown up with only boys. she loved her brothers, there was no doubt about that, but it was nice to finally have someone she could relate to. she’s heard of stories about in-laws not getting along with each other but the gods have been good to her family and so she saw sooah as a blessing; a woman, that wasn’t her mother, that she could look up to. 

the younger female nodded and followed the crowd of people walk into the grounds. hayoung couldn’t help but look around and admire the grandeur of the palace. she’s been here a couple of times but its beauty never failed to take her breath away. it symbolized the wealth and power of joseon as it houses the monarchy; it’s no wonder people want to covet such beauty. at a young age, hayoung understood the chaos that comes with power and so she could not help but wonder what goes on behind these walls. maybe she will never know. “i would much rather see my nephews than my brother!” she teased. “i’ve seen him everyday growing up. please give me a break.” hayoung chuckled, shaking her head. “how is he though? i pray he does not overwork himself,” she’s seen how hard her brothers work and so she as a younger sister, she couldn’t help but worry. “you know, on some days i wonder if i could just watch over your children and not get married then again, father would probably disown me if ever.”

Sooah laughed at the youngest Kim words, finding her adorable. “Your secret is safe with me, I won’t tell a soul” She chuckled as she felt her link their arms together making her look at her with a soft smile, her words making her heart feel warm with happiness. Sooah found another sister in Hayoung when she married Hyunshik and she was greateful for that, the young lady was like fresh air for her, always filled with laughter and happiness. Something Sooah trully wished would never fade. 

The girl sent Sooah in another fit of giggles at her words, a joke she knew but still she found them funny. As they spoke about her husband, her eyes lit up as it was obvious that the woman was very much in love with him. “He is good, actually comes home early most of the time to play with the kids.” Sooah had been lucky, every night she thanked her lucky star that had united the two of them, for she fell in love with the man she married. “Sometimes even earlier than expected” She spoke smiling happily, remembering the situation of a few days ago. Her words made sooah smile tenderly at her, the same look she gave her sons, “You know that the kids would love that, and we wouldn’t mind.” She spoke trying to give her some sort of comfort, both of them knew that would never happen. Sooah spoke while patting her hand gently. “I trully pray that you face the same luck i did. I trully wish you happiness and love my dear”

“dear sooah, I’m sorry to inform you that’s a complete lie. my parents are so eager for me to marry, that I would know by now if I had caught the eyes or hearts of some”, and, of course, sooah knew that too, after all, they have been friends long enough. mishil was sitting comfortably next to her, looked around just out of curiosity. “well, then tell someone to go get them! I want to kiss and hug all of them. oh, it must be so good to have kids around. you are here taking care of your house, your husband and your kids, and everything I know how to do is being pretty.”

she sighed in frustration. she just wanted was to find someone to get her out of the boredom of her life, to make her love again and send the memories of her first love away, but she had no luck. shaking her head, mishil tried to end with the self-pity session and returned her attention to her dear friend. “yes. let’s drink some tea.” 

“Oh my dear Mishil, you underestimate your beauty.” Sooah smiled as she patted her friend’s hand. “You and your sister are some of the most beautiful Ladies in the city. You might think so but remember I join the mother’s conversations now and believe me your looks have been praised by them...” Sooah had grown up with her, she had an angelic look that her sister shared...guess that was the Han sisters charm. 

Sooah laughed at Mishil’s words “Will do that, just for you.” The lady called a maid and spoke of her friends wishes with a smile happily. “Those are lies and you know it...but if that is something you want I’m sure you will have it someday” Sooah smiled, she knew that kind of lifestyle wasn’t something every lady wanted but if her friend did, Sooah could only pray she will have it one day. “Lovely” She took her hand in hers and pulled her towards her chair, “Come sit, before we get tired of standing.”  A happy smile took over her features.

weddings have always fascinated hayoung. she’s only been ever gone to a few. the most notable ones were both her brothers. coming from a prominent family, she knew how important these ‘milestones’ were especially since these unions would somehow always be beneficial to each family one way or another, it was always like that. marrying for love was not a luxury women like her had. she would be lucky if she at least got along with her husband or even grow to love him. as a young noble woman, it is something you often think about. still, the preparations, the ceremony, and the celebrations fascinated her. she loved watching the bride emerge in the traditional wedding garments. 

red was a flattering color on everyone, hayoung noted. remembering the weddings of her brothers and how her sister-in-laws looked so ethereal. brides always had this sort of glow on their wedding day, she also noted. hayoung quietly slipped out of her palanquin, smoothing her skirts as she did. why did she feel nervous all of a sudden? she hasn’t been outside in a while other than attending etiquette classes; she was afraid she might not recognize anyone. taking a deep breath she put on her jangot and made her way to the entrance of the palace. 

it was a relief to see sooah. the one face in the crowd she instantly recognized. “i was starting to get dizzy with all these people around and some i barely even recognized!” she approached her sister-in-law, relief written all over her face as she peeked through her jangot. “you look lovely as always,” hayoung smiled. “shall we go inside?”

Weddings in their world often meant a loveless marriage, an arrangemtent made by parents who wished more power, more profit who saw nothing wrong in chosing for their own kids, though her marriage wasn’t like that now, it was filled with love she had for her husband and could proudly say that all her kids were from love not everyone could say it, for some it was worse than a punishment for they loved someone they couldn’t have. It was sad, but it was how the world worked and Sooah could only thank her lucky star to have found Hyunshik in her marriage and hope, that neither of her kids would have to suffer from such injustice.

Still the woman smiled brightly it,  was a royal union making everyone wear their prettiest smiles and finest clothes. Her husband was with their children as she walked to find a familiar face that was around her home more often that in the elder Kim’s household, or so Sooah liked to joke about. A chuckle left her mouth before she linked their arms as they walked. “Hopefully you will fill better now that you are in company with family.” Sooah liked Hayoung, she was like a little sister and made sure her maternal side was showing even before her oldest son was born. “Thank you, little Lady. You look beautiful today.” Sooah smiled brightly “We shall. Your brother is somewhere inside"

A sigh escapes his lips, followed by a small smile upon hearing her reassuring words. Perhaps he was being too paranoid, glancing pass behind his wife’s crown, his sons eagerly and in such a behaved manner watched over them. He could tell how desperately they wanted to run towards them and see what was going on, especially when Hyunshik had not come directly and greeted them when he arrived. 

Making sure to keep his expression neutral so not to worry their kids, the official playfully winks at his kids. Gesturing for them to continue playing, knowing full well that he’ll have to explain to them what was happening and perhaps a little extra time with them later on in the evening before they went to bed. Following his wife into her receiving area, he stands in the corner. It was common practice leave the patient and physician alone, but the patient happens to be his wife, so common practice did not apply in this situation. 

His patient growing thin before finally asking in a clip manner. “What are your findings doctor?” His gaze holding onto Sooah’s, the action was the only think keeping him both calm and in his place by the corner. 

Sooah smiled gently at her husband who was watching them from afar, as she let the doctor do whatever he needed in hopes of making the whole thing easier only returning her attention back to him when he started asking her questions which she tried to answer the best she could.  Her eyes shining as the more she listened to his questions, she wasn’t a doctor but sooah was smart,  with her answers came a familiar feeling, the same thing had happened two times before to be exact, as the woman spoke with the doctor she started joining the dots on her own. Still she waited for the final words of the man.

Her eyes moved from the doctor to her beloved husband. A smile growing in her face as she heard the words coming from the doctors mouth. ‘Congratulations my lord.’ was all he needed to say for Sooah to gasp in surprise, her hands covering her mouth as a smile grows behind them. She was right. ‘Lady Sooah is with a child’ The woman could feel her heart beating against her chest from those news, as well as her eyes filled with happy tears. “My love” She spoke while standing up, walking closer while extending her hand for him, trying to reach him. “We are to be parents again.” Sooah took his hand in hers, a loving stare was in her brown orbs as she stared up at him. “Are you happy, my love?”

there’s an undeniable responsibly that comes with being a princess, a burden that’s impossible to ignore. there’s a bridge that separates her from the rest, the same old bridge that separates those with royal and common blood in their veins. after all, the importance of someone’s great family could never be matched with the royal one and for that reason alone, seona oftentimes felt alone. 

even her own husband sometimes treated her like some endangered creature, a thing of high status that’s not supposed to be touched. but perhaps that’s her biggest problem. perhaps she was born in the wrong family and for her there’s no escape. her gentleness could only be matched with her friendliness, but there are certain lines princesses are never supposed to cross. 

princesses ought to remain calm, poised, indifferent and gallant in every situation. god forbid if she ever does something that doesn’t match with the royal protocol. god forbid someone sees her enjoying just a little in her life. 

and for that reason, she sometimes envies those who weren’t born in the royal family, born without that sort of worry in their lives. so, when she by surprise ruins into the young and beautiful sooah, she cannot help but be reminded of her old envious thoughts. ‘’oh excuse me. i almost didn’t see you there. but that would’ve been a grave mistake. you look absolutely beautiful. your hanbok is marvelous. where did you find such pretty material?’’

Sooah was enjoying her evening as much as someone could when they were in presence of royalty for a mistake infront of them could be lethal for anyone. Still the young woman smiled as if she had not a worry in the world, as if she enjoyed being in the palace as much as she enjoyed the comfort of her home, though that was a lie. She had taken a few steps away from her own family, trying to find her best friend to greet her when princess Seona came, though it would have ended up in a crash between the two if they hadn’t stopped walking. “Your Highness” Sooah bowed to greet her. “Oh no, it was my mistake. I apologize” 

She smiled to the princess, “Thank you, your Highness. Though nothing in me compares to the beauty of your Highness, as beautiful as the stars in the night sky” It was true, the princess was known for her beauty and her grace. “They are from the market, if I remember correctly.” Soo had never been the one interested in the silk nor the price of such materials, she had never asked for materials imported from another country or city, she was happy as long as they were beautiful in her eyes. “If your Highness believes so highly of my hanbok, I would love to supply the material for one for her highness. Though I’m afraid the materials wouldn’t be the finest silks.”

it was a sunny day and mishil soon realized that it’d be a waste of time to just sit in her room all day, practicing her embroidery, so she asked her father’s permission to go out. at first, the man seemed afraid to let her out, but mishil assured him that she would be accompanied by anyone of his choice and that she just wanted to visit sooah in her house. their friendship was known, and he also knew how difficult it was for the two of them to meet, especially after sooah’s wedding. after a few minutes of waiting, her father finally granted her permission to go. on the way, mishil went to the market to see some hairpins. she didn’t want to go to her friend’s house empty-handed, so she bought something she imagined she would like. when she arrived at the house where sooah lived, she announced that she was there to see her friend and waited until she was guided to the gardens, where she saw her. “sooah, you are the most beautiful of this house. your husband would agree with me.” she approached while laughing, taking the place beside her. “where are they? it’s been a while since I’ve seen them. and I bought you a gift.” still smiling, mishil handed the present to sooah.

“Oh sush” Sooah smiled happily at her friend, “My husband would agree with you because he is my husband but I believe the unmarried Lords would agree that you are even more beautiful than me, or so I’ve heard in the market, Lady Mishil  has caught the eyes or hearts of many” Sooah teased her friend, clearly exagerating for the purpose of messing around. Her eyes shining brightly at the mention of her kids.  “Playing in the garden, though me prepared, when they hear that you are here they will come running to hug you, my dear friend.” Soo smiled, that happened every time her husband arrived home.

Her brown orbs moved from her to the present making the woman smile at her friend “It’s lovely, Mishil. Thank you very much” Sooah smiled while looking at it, truthfully Mishil had an exceptional taste, it was beautiful. “Please sit, would you like anything to drink or eat?”
