literally how hard would it have been for jkr to say something like “listen I was writing it in the 90s, I was inexperienced, I was writing from my own point of view, I didn’t realise how underrepresented a lot of people are, I wasn’t thinking about anything other than the plot, I accept that it’s a little sparse on the diversity front, I can try to be more self aware with my future works” etc etc instead of.. this nonsense

LISTEN. Can someone explain this bullshit to me? Like I get that HP isn’t very diverse but why did we start attacking JKR for it? It literally says it right here, I’m sure a lot of thing in the 90’s werent diverse!!! A lot things you enjoy!! Times change! Not everything ever in the world can be perfect and inclusive and pure and ahead of its time! All we can do is do better moving forward. So like… maybe I’m missing something? But why did we like turn around and hone in on HP and JKR specifically? Let it go. Like maybe she’s in the wrong in what she is doing now to try and fix it but honestly? She shouldn’t have to be doing this “nonsense” in the first place. And dare I say that… like… not everything has to be crazy representative and diverse and inclusive?? Like there are plenty of books that are that you can read and if you don’t think there are enough maybe that’s what you should be focusing on campaigning for.. why go back and tear about something that’s already been written??

because that’s the thing: it’s already been written, but she’s now trying to say after the fact “no it really was diverse!!” and doing it extremely poorly. no one is really attacking her for what she wrote in the books. they’re attacking her for what she didn’t write and is now claiming was totally there all along you guys!! they’re attacking her for fucking lying and doing it poorly. if someone is pressuring her to retroactively diversify, i haven’t seen it. she’s doing it on her own, at best in response to cultural pressure that’s happening around her, not any significant direct pressure on her (like, yeah, there are some idiots squawking but surely she knows how to ignore the trolls by now). and she’s doing it because her non-HP writing doesn’t do that well (when’s the last you actually heard about another robert galbraith novel coming out? cause i was surprised to hear there was one this year) so now this is the cash cow she has to milk to keep making money. and it’s transparently nothing but that.

I said that she may be in the wrong now but i don’t think anyone should have been complaining in the first place? Not everything can be perfect and she’s not a monster? Like if you call her out for “what she didn’t write” where do you draw the line because I’m sure there’s millions of books, movies, etc. that could be called out for a million things they didn’t include. It makes no sense. Like I’m just wondering what would be okay with everybody? Like what do writers have to do? Make sure that’s a character of every single race and every single sexual orientation? The thing is there is black characters ! There’s Asian characters! I’m not understanding what has to be done to appease people. Like look, I’m not saying there shouldn’t be representation, there should!! But it’s just going way to far when we have to rehash stuff that was written in a different time, a different social atmosphere. So like just leave it alone, move on.

i mean, for one thing, calling out previous stuff for not being diverse enough is literally how we grow and get better in the future. the solution to it isn’t to try and go “well neener neener it was diverse all along!” but i’m actually literally not doing any of that in your post. i’m not “calling her out” for “what she didn’t write,” i’m accusing her of lying about it now. that’s the problem. that’s the difference.

Again, I said I know she’s not reacting well. My whole point is that it shouldn’t have been brought up in the first place. It’s just completely ridiculous that she had to answer for what she has written in the past. I could understand if she was a complete racist asshole spewing hate, then yeah sure. That’s fine, i understand that. Once again. My entiiiiiire point, and I’m sorry if I didn’t make this clear, is that I think it’s ridiculous that people began to get upset with the books for not being diverse enough in the first place.
