used   to   look   forward   to   staying   at   his   father’s   house   at   weekends   when   he   was   a   child   but   that   soon   changed   when   the   man   became   too   busy   for   his   only   son   and   then   returned   to   his   life   ten   years   later   with   a   new   wife   .   reese   didn’t   care   about   getting   to   know   the   woman   almost   too   young   for   his   dad   however   his   mom   had   managed   to   convince   him   that   marisol   was   his   family   now   too   and   he   should   make   an   effort   .   rolls   his   eyes   at   the   familiar   voice   as   he   quietly   closes   the   door   ,   was   hoping   the   woman   would   be   asleep   –––   doesn’t   understand   why   marisol   would   wait   up   for   him   ,   it   wasn’t   like   his   father   was   home   and   she   had   to   prove   that   she   cares   for   him   .   reese   ignores   her   rhetorical   question   about   the   time   before   he   passes   by   her   ,   heading   for   the   stair   case   .   “   look   ,   just   ‘cause   you’re   now   fuckin’   my   dad   it   doesn’t   mean   you   can   try   and   be   my   mom   .   ”   as   furious   as   he   was   about   the   situation   ,   he   would   never   have   been   so   rude   and   vulgar   if   he   had   been   sober      …   and   maybe   he   was   a   little   frustrated   that   his   father’s   eyes   had   fallen   on   marisol   first   .   turning   around   ,   reese’s   hazel   optics   scan   femme’s   curvaceous   figure   ,   lips   teasing   a   smile   .   “   no   ,   that’s   exactly   what   it   means   .   step   mom   or   not   ,   i’m   not   following   the   orders   of   someone   born   in   the   same   decade   as   me   .   ”   takes   a   few   steps   closer   to   the   other   ,   was   now   attempting   to   be   deliberately   cruel   .   “   you   think   he’s   out   of   town   for   work   ?   i   can   tell   you   he’s   definitely   not   ,   he’s   probably   in   the   city   throwing   hundred   dollar   bills   at   strippers   .   or   fucking   bitches   even   younger   than   you   .   ”

she  wasn’t  prepared  for  motherhood.  of  course  the  idea  had  floated  around  in  her  mind,  considering  she  came  from  the  perfect  home  &  was  surrounded  by  happy  families  all  her  life.  she  even  wrote  romance  novels  for  gods  sake.   but  she  definitely  wasn’t  ready  any  time  soon  to  play  mom,  especially  when  to  a  grown  man  closer  in  her  age  than  she  &  her  husband.  marisol  knows  she  doesn’t  have  to  really  do  much,  he  was  old  enough  to  make  his  own  choices  &  had  his  own  mother  who  raised  him  -  but  she  wants  to  be  on  his  good  side.  she  doesn’ t want  family  gatherings  to  be  awkward,  she  wants  to  connect  with  him  as  much  as  she  could.  even  if  he  was  too  stubborn  for  his  own  good.  “  i’m  not  just  ...  i’m  married  to  him.  &  i’m  not  trying  to  be  your  mom.  i’m  trying  to  be  your  friend.  “  she  tries,  raising  her  hands  to  coax  over  her  face  before  running  through  her  hair.  his  words  cause  her  nostrils  to  flair,  her  jaw  clenching  &  her  cheeks  to  turn  hot.  stands  her  ground  when  he  approaches  closer,  her  eyes  narrowing  as  she  lets  out  a  frustrated  breath.  “  why  are  you  being  so  nasty,  reece?  you  need  to  watch  your  tone,  okay?  don’t  talk  about  your  father  like  that.  i  trust  him.  “  sort  of.  hell,  she  was  still  trying  to  get  to  know  him.  which  was  considerably  hard,  considering  he  was  gone  most  of  the  time.  shaking  her  head  at  the  ground,  marisol  crosses  her  arms.  '  i’m  not  asking  for  a  lot here,  reece.  all  i’m  asking  for  is  some  respect.  a  text  to  let  me  know  if  you’re  coming  home  or  not  so  i  don’t  worry  about  you.  '

she’s  frustrated. lack  of  sleep  &  too  much  worry  of  a  son  that  wasn’t  her  own.  she  wasn’t  prepared  for  this,  motherhood,  let  alone  being  a  step  mother  to  one  closer  to  her  age  than  the  man  she  had  married  a  month  prior.  she  loved  her  husband,  she  did.  however,  he  had  hid  the  fact  he  had  a  kid  from  a  previous  relationship,  and  if  marisol  had  known  that,  she  would  have  thought  twice  about  rushing  into  a  marriage.  finally,  the  front  door  swings  open  and  tired  eyes  snap  away  from  the  ticking  clock  she’d  sat  watching  for  the  last  couple  hours.  she  stands  and  turns,  swallowing  before  clearing  her  throat,  catching  the  attention  of  the  other. ‘ do  you  know  what  time  it  is ?  ‘  head  points  to  the  clock,  brow  raised  and  she  speaks  again.  ‘  look,  i  know  you’re  grown  and all,  but  you  can’t  just  go  out  all  night  without  letting  me  know  when  and  where  you’re  going,  and  when  you’re  coming  back.  just  because  you’re  father  isn’t  here  to  enforce  the  rules  of  the  house  doesn’t  mean  you  can’t  comply  with  them. ‘
