D’Grace boutique - Yasui Hideo Atelier (Hakata ward, Fukuoka, Japan) (1997)

From the book ‘Powershop’: “Deep underground, beneath a hip department store in Fukuoka geared to Japanese youth - lies a boutique with an absolutely dazzling interior designed by Yasui Hideo. Yasui saw light - the cheapest ‘building block’ - as the most effective solution to the multifaceted problem. His idea was to give customers the feeling that they had just awakened and were still blinded by the light of a new day, an unknown period of experiences exciting and different - very much like fashions by D'Grace. The space as a whole is not particularly calming; customers tend to blink and narrow their eyes to get used to the light. Precisely the effect that Yasui set out to create!”
