This year is different in ALL aspects of life. #2020 will be a year we all will never forget. And in keeping tune with all the differentness.... I give you....both of my fathers. Charles Robinson is the reason I exist. He passed away this past March and I was unable to be with that side of my family through any of it. It was, and still is, a really shitty feeling to go through. When your blood goes on ahead of you it’s a feeling you can’t describe, nor want to. I don’t wish it on anyone. Speak to the ones you’ve been procrastinating about, don’t wait. See them. Talk to them. 💔 I’m pretty sure it’ll be me or my children/grandchildren who’ll be the last ones to speak his name aloud. I know my Dad, Craig, will understand me including him in this one. Craig Small, is my Dad. He chose to be, and that in itself is to be respected and loved. He taught me so many things about life, I’d be hard pressed to find the end of the list. But a lot of the really important stuff that I carry with me today, comes from him. ❤️ I wish he could see himself through my eyes and my heart, he would be able to witness how much he means to me. Father/daughter relationships are hard sometimes, but when it comes down to it, the love is always there. I join “Women’s only” FB groups so I don’t have to be mansplained to or hit-on all the time. I join “Indigenous only” FB groups so I don’t have to listen to non-indigenous people tell me HOW to ‘properly’ be Indigenous. Don’t tell me there’s no systemic racism/sexism in this country. There is always someone around every corner to tell me how to be because they believe they’ve got the right. Then I’m the bitch because I’m not doing what I’m told. The need to create our own safe spaces because the rest of the world is unsafe is literally the defining characteristic of a broken society. A woman’s strength is THE ONLY reason shit hasn’t completely hit the fan yet. Why does everyone want to push it to the very end? So, my mom asked me again today how the quitting smoking thing was going. My reply: “I’m really bothered that my body is doing this without my consent.” After some thought and wondering what the hell is going on, I remembered my Grama Rose. While visiting her in Jackpine Flats, I would put my jacket and shoes on to go outside for a smoke. She’s do her little belly chuckle and exclaim, “Oh oh, Heather’s going out for her bo’h!” (That’s ‘baby bottle’ in Wetsu’wet’en.) Sometimes, she’d sit with me after I came back in and tell me the story about how she quit smoking, in hopes that it would inspire me to quit. After she finished telling me, I would ask her, “Grama, how old were you when you quit?” She replied, “I was 44 I think.” Me: “Well Grama, I have quite a few years until I turn 44. So until then, I’m gonna enjoy it and smoke my face off.
