Wer die letzten zwei Wochen anderweitig beschäftigt war, Twitter keines Blickes gewürdigt hat, seinen Feedreader völlig vernachlässigt hat: Bei Facebook hilft nur noch, den Stecker zu ziehen. Mal ein paar ausgewählte Artikel, ich werde nicht einzeln darauf eingehen:

Facebooks Problem hat Charlie Warzel so beschrieben (übrigens ein toller Artikel!):

The platform is simply too big. Leave it alone and it turns into a dangerous cesspool; play around with the knobs and risk inadvertently censoring or heaping world historic amounts of attention onto people or movements you never anticipated, creating yet more unanticipated outcomes. If there’s any shred of sympathy I have for the company, it’s that there don’t seem to be any great options.

PayPal

Paypal wird zum Bankkonto. Naja, jedenfalls bohrt PayPal seine mobilen Apps weit auf.

The new PayPal app will introduce new features including PayPal Savings, a new high yield savings account provided by Synchrony Bank, alongside new in-app shopping tools that will enable customers to earn rewards redeemable for cash back or PayPal shopping credit and uncover deals with hundreds of merchants.

Additionally, the new app offers PayPal customers a single place to manage their bill payments, get paid up to two days earlier with the new Direct Deposit feature provided through one of our bank partners, earn rewards and manage gift cards, send and receive money to friends, family and businesses, pay with QR codes for purchases and redeem rewards in-store, access and manage credit, Buy Now, Pay Later services, buy, hold and sell crypto, as well as support causes and charities they care about.

Das macht für PayPal alles komplett Sinn und man hat die Zahlungsströme der Kunden fast komplett im Blick. Zusätzlich denke man noch an die mögliche Einbindung des PayPal Kontos in Google Pay und das Bild des Kunden wird für das Unternehmen noch deutlicher. Interessant und ebenfalls sinnvoll für PayPal ist, dass man Kooperationen eingeht und nicht alle Bestandteile selbst entwickelt.

Diese Form der App wird es vorerst nur in den USA geben. Ob und wann es sie auch in Deutschland geben wird, hängt sicherlich auch von möglichen Kooperationspartnern hier ab.

Eine solche umfangreiche App kann man natürlich auch kritisch sehen. Eine mit Features vollgepackte App kann unübersichtlich werden. Kunden werden zudem sehr gläsern.

Twitter

Von nun an können iOS-Nutzer der Twitter App ("Android soon") anderen Nutzer*innen ein Trinkgeld geben, Twitter Tip Jar. Ob das eine Einnahmequelle für einige wird? Warum nicht. Einige Leute tweeten sinnvolle Kommentare und Links über den Tag verteilt. Ich selbst bin mir aber unschlüssig, ob ich ein solches Trinkgeld geben würde.

Ach ja, man kann auch mit Bitcoin zahlen und eine Authentifizierung mit NFT über eine Anbindung der Crypto Wallet soll es ebenfalls geben (aber da steige ich nicht durch).

Read Later

Wer hätte das gedacht: Es gibt mit Matter und Upnext neue Player im Read Later Geschäft und damit Konkurrenz zu Pocket und Instapaper. Für beide besteht allerdings eine Warteliste.

Chinesische Smartphones

In Litauen wurden Sicherheitsmängel bei 5G-Smartphones von Xiaomi und Huawei festgestellt. Hm.

Ich frage mich, ob wir nicht demnächst im Westen nicht nur lediglich zwei mobile OS haben, sondern auch nur noch zwei relevante Gerätehersteller: Apple und Samsung. Der Androidmarkt ist ohne chinesiche Hersteller fest in der Hand von Samsung, andere Hersteller spielen keine Rolle. Witzigerweise hatten (Huawei) bzw. haben (Xiaomi) chinesische Hersteller eine Führungsrolle bei den meistverkauften Geräten inne. Es sieht fast so aus, als verspielten sie diese Rolle mit zu starker Nähe zur chinesischen Regierung.

Fallen die Chinesen für den westlichen Markt weg, wird das unweigerlich Konsequenzen für Android und damit auch für Google nach sich ziehen. Ich halte es zwar für ziemlich ausgeschlossen, dass Google Android aufgeben wird, dazu ist der Play Store zu wichtig. Aber Samsung wird ein größeres Mitspracherecht beanspruchen.
