funny to me how a lot of people’s reactions to The Gaslight District go like “I wasn’t sure what to think of it at first. When I originally watched the pilot I did not know if I liked it. Of course, after watching the pilot for the 12th time I realized I did actually like it.” It’s so relatable this show just does that to people 😅 Even if it weirds you out or is kind of confusing the first time around, once you’ve come back for a second view it’s already too late. It has barged its way into your brain and barricaded itself there armed with guns and knives. You couldn’t evict it if you wanted and you’re scared to try. You have drawn that bread guy 400 times in the past month and you cannot stop. Or maybe that last part’s just me lol

Sometimes I wonder why Ken is so desperate to keep Mel alive and uninjured when if she does die he wouldn’t have to worry about keeping such a big secret anymore

My theory is that Ken became attached to her.

We don't really know the full circumstances as to why Mel's in his care, but we do know that there was some kind of deal between him and Temperance, most likely to keep the other virtues off of Ken's back.

Could it be that he's over the eternal life thing? Or that he promised to raise her in exchange for his freedom? Or if he initially planned to kill her but just couldn't bring himself to do it?

We don't know. And we're probably not going to know until closer to the end of the show.

But what I can tell you is that he loves her. Sure, he calls her a brat, argues with her, and does some things that constitutes as emotional abuse, but he still loves Mel. If he didn't care about her and would be "better off" with her dead, he wouldn't have gone through all of the trouble to protect her as you've said.

Ken views Mel through the eyes of a parent. He doesn't just see her as the prophesized human child, he sees her as his daughter. The same way he views Breadhead as his son. And it's his role, as a father, to protect his children. Ken has more leeway with Breadhead, because Breadhead has the mark of the Black Hand, and can't permanently die. He has to be more cautious with Mel, because of her mortality.

One of the worst things that can happen to a parent (at least in reality) is for their child to die before them. In Ken's case, he's probably already painfully aware that he's going to outlive Mel no matter the circumstances, solely because of the Black Hand. And because of that, he's going to be living with the grief of losing her for the rest of eternity. In his mind, he'd want her to live as long as she can, without exposing her to dangers that can cut her life short. (Plus, he also has the added risk of never letting Mud or Breadhead know about Mel's mortality. So he wouldn't just be handling the grief if she were to pass suddenly, but he'd have to handle his brother and son feeling rightfully betrayed and enraged towards him as a result of his secret-keeping.)

Apparently ICE now has agents posing as utility workers to get into people's homes. The electric and gas companies have posted information on how to tell if it's one of their workers, and numbers to call to confirm whether they've sent someone to do utility work on your house.

Some people have shared stories of suspicious “sales representatives” knocking on homes, asking about the home owners and who lives there, fishing for phone numbers, but do not provide business cards, company id, company phone numbers, etc when asked.

They come in pairs, never one person though one may hag back a bit. They have been seen using cars with significantly tinted windows, no business logos anywhere on the vehicle, or parking close to the home they walked up to only to drive away right after without visiting other homes, almost as if they’re not real sales people.

True door to door salespeople need a sort of peddler’s license, subject to city and county law, to solicit at your door. You can ask to see this permit. If they don’t provide one or make an excuse, they are likely bogus.

They wear a jacket with a company logo but likely don’t wear name tags and the Don’t provide id.

Tell them you’ll call the company about a noncompliant representative. Make them leave. Better yet not to open the door to them, and tell them nothing.

Actual sales reps also generally do follow “no soliciting” signs. Be aware, be safe, don’t give out your information or that of others under duplicitous means.

Well, since they can't suffer a true death, here's my idea for how it would go.

(Details under cut.)

Rabies does not always cause the aggressive, frothing at the mouth image we think of when we hear it's name. (Which is classified as Furious Rabies, and is the most common presentation). There's another clinical form of Rabies called Paralytic Rabies, which means that the body will become paralyzed, starting at the site of infection and working it's way through.

So it would depend on how the illness would present in a Rotling. But with both stages, they end with full body paralysis and death. In the case of a Rotling, since they can't suffer a true death, at the end stages of Rabies, they'd probably be stuck in a cycle of repeated deaths until the virus completely destroys the brain. They'd basically be braindead for a while, as the virus tries and fails to look for new host cells in their body, and eventually dies off. (This could be made faster with the use of antivirals, but those, alongside the post-exposure vaccine, would be limited and insanely expensive.) They'd regain consciousness once the Black Hand repairs their brain enough to handle it, but would probably have to relearn everything. It would effectively erase who they once were and all of their memories.

So I could see Rotlings wanting to avoid this disease at all costs. Not because they can't handle the death, but because it strips the infected of who they once were, and forces them to relearn how to live in an unkind world. No one wants to endure that. So they'd probably kill any Litterbug or other creature that shows symptoms on sight.

This is just how I think it would work within the district. I'm not a doctor or virologist, so I apologize if there are inaccuracies.
