I judge people when they say Katniss should’ve ended up alone
Okay we as an audience grieve Finnick and his unfortunate death. Katniss will have years of guilt because of it. But I think we rarely talk about how much Peeta was affected. Even when he was hijacked , one of his only allies was Finnick. Finnick literally saved his life and then saved Katnisses, a promise that peeta was unable to keep himself. Idk just thinking about how Peeta would make sure to be involved in Finnick’s sons life as a way of paying the invaluable debt he has to finnick…tears
Reblog the writers’ fortune cookie for luck!
Guys I reblogged this and then wrote an 8000 word story I didn’t even have a solid plan for. Reblog this shit.
i need fucking motivation-
okay, but no joke, i now am writing like 5 oneshots after reblogging this yesterday-wtf-
i need it to work rn >:0

OH MY GOD IT WORKED ASHJASUHJASHAJ
i’m sure there’s a metaphor somewhere in Katnisses detailed descriptions of food but I haven’t figured it out yet. Will update eventually.
(also I know in b1 the descriptions of food are meant to highlight the fact the class divide between capitol and districts, but since this metaphor continues into B2 and 3 where that contrast between the capitol and the districts has been made apparent in many ways, I think the descriptions of food provide another purpose)

reason 52726272626 to love the hunger games is for its accurate portrayal of grief. Katnisses grief is ugly, it’s devastating, and for anyone who went through mockingjay, it seems personal, because she isn’t just mourning Prim, she’s mourning Finnick, Boggs, her loss of friendship to gale, and ultimately herself. Katniss didn’t love her life pre the games but she was comfortable in it, which is truly all she ever wanted from life, to be safe and comfortable. And even as each page of the books strips Katniss of the innocence of her 16 year old self, a part of it hangs on, the part that hopes that things will eventually “go back to normal”, even as she knows that normal no longer exist. Losing prim and returning to her empty home, essentially an orphan (not from losing her mother but from losing the last sense of family she felt she had), is the unquestionable sign that her old life is over and she will never be able to go back to the person she was. And Suzanne collins writes all of these emotions, the guilt, the sadness, the anger, the numbness, so accurately, that you weep along w Katniss when she screams at buttercup, and in the final pages, you sit in the meadow with her, filled with the catharsis that Katniss has finally found safety again.
Happy Day of Birth to the girl on fire Ms.Katniss Everdeen!!
things I hope everlark did post war
1. built their own house complete with a pond to recreate the pond that Katnisses dad took her to
2. replanted flowers in the meadow: primroses, Rue, Wildflowers, DANDELIONS
3. Open a new bakery
4. Get married D12 style (toasting)
5. Katniss learns how to paint
6. Get a new goat cuz i’m 90% sure Lady was not one of the survivors of the bombing
7. Peeta gives out free art lessons to the kids of D12
8. Get Buttercup a fellow cat friend OR build buttercup his own mini house
9. Have babies and Peeta carries them around during his daily activities in one of those baby carrier burrito wrap things
And so many more sometimes they just pop into my head sometimes
I don’t know where people stand on this but I genuinely don’t think Katniss would name her children after dead people- her dad, Prim, Rue, etc. Even though she’s probably more at peace than she would’ve been when Snow was in power, I don’t think it’s in her nature to be reminded of the people she’s lost. it’s one of the reasons she didn’t sing for so long or that she was unable to try to “save” peeta after he was brought back to 13 post hijacking. However, I do think Peeta would want to name his son after his brothers, so it’s interesting to see what they would end up naming their kids. I’ve seen the idea of Meadow floated around and I think that’s cute, or maybe some Synonym of Dandelion? i’ve tried looking for some but dandelion doesn’t have a lot of popular synonyms. Suzanne Collins did have to find the name “Katniss” out of a plant book so maybe there’s more in there.
As a profylic writer of Toastbabies I get this...this struggle. The hardest thing is naming the kids.
To be fair I've never thought of Dandelion as a name, but that being said- it's brilliant. If they did I could see them shortening it too, Lee/Li, Leon, Lion, 'D', for either boy or girl.
I always look for names that mean peace, love, prosperity, trust, balance, ect- all the qualities that Peeta & Katniss exude either in themselves or in their marriage. And if it's like nature names I look for things that mean grace and fairness.
Oddly enough I never look for food names. Though if you really think about it food is really important to both Peeta & Katniss. Though I do think... Peeta does use the food as terms of endearment toword his kids.
I could see him saying to his little boy or girl come here sugar, my little dollop of honey, hey cupcake...🤭 And his kids are eternally embarrassed by it as they get older.
@rosegardeninwinter I think she would have amazing names for their kids.
why thank you! naming the kids is so hard and I love to see the variation of what everyone names the babies! for myself, I tend towards nature names and virtue names too (I’ve seen Dani as a shortening of Dandelion and I think it’s very cute)
here are some of my previous thoughts about this question but I shall summarize it here
in the past I’ve used Willow and Ash (sometimes I still do) but I also use Calla and Sage (this is @captainseaweedbrains’ fault)
here are some other (though this is by no means an exhaustive list) names I like for the children, sometimes depending on the story I’m writing, though sometimes I go the epilogue route and just don’t name them ...
The dancing girl: Willow, Calla, Ivy, Hope, Pearl
The boy with blond curls: Ash, Sage, Fletcher, Archer
(Ivy Fletcher happens to be a favorite on my own personal list of baby names so that one comes and goes depending on whether I really want to attach those names to the toasts 😋)
I am always torn about whether or not they’d name their children after someone they lost and I tend to think not; the exception to this is that sometimes I call Mr. Everdeen Sage and then the son would be named after his grandfather; I could probably be persuaded on Ry after a Mellark brother, or maybe Primrose as a middle name, depending on where Katniss and Peeta are at in their grief and remembrance
I also completely agree with @mega-aulover that these babies have more nicknames than you could count!
I like @katnissmeowverdeen ‘s idea with the name Dani as a nickname for Dandelion.
I always imagine though that they name their kids after food and/or plants. Actually that’s a lie. They could name their kids after ideals like Hope (girl) and Honor (boy) . Or something like that. Or super on the nose symbolic names like Forrest, Archer, Meadow, Spring, Melody, etc.
I personally in my writing usually stick with food or plant names though. I used Indigofera for the girl even though that’s probably not likely (I just like the name Indigo, okay?). But names like Jasmine and Sage. Lavender and Linden. Willow and Reed. Those are the ones that seem most likely to me. But there’s also weather names I feel could work, like Stormy or Rain or something like that.
And then, in terms of naming their babies after dead people, I really can’t imagine it either. Aside from maybe naming their daughter Ivy Rose, because it’s far enough away from Primrose but also kind of a tribute to her. 🤷🏼♀️. Just my thoughts.
the writing style of the hunger games is addictive and that’s a huge part of the appeal of the novels that didn’t get translated to the screen. i always think about the stephanie meyer (lol) quote on the hunger games book where she says “i couldn’t put this book down i had to take it out to dinner and keep reading it” and i mean, so true bestie stephanie, but here’s why.
it’s because every chapter ends in a cliffhanger. and i’m not kidding when i say that it is so flawlessly paced that you can’t put it down, but those beats are so crucial to why the book is so amazing to read. think of the end of the literal first chapter of the book: “it’s primrose everdeen.” that is a BOMB that she drops in that first chapter, and after the introduction, you as the reader are as blown away as katniss. so, you can’t help but turn the page and keep reading!! because you HAVE to know what happens next. and how does the second chapter end? like this: “of course, the odds have not been very dependable of late.” you, the reader, are instantly thinking, oh my god, what is going to happen? are the odds going to be in her favor? is she going to have to kill peeta? you HAVE to know. so you turn the page.
the reason this works so well is because suzanne collins wrote for television and you can tell. it is my personal belief that thg should have been adapted for television and not into films, because missing those beats, even just the white space of the page, i think fundamentally warps the pacing and the structure of the novels. i know i go on and on and on about the “because she came here with me” and “if it weren’t for the baby” lines but seriously this is why peeta is a media genius, its’ because suzanne COLLINS is a media genius. can you imagine watching that on television and the screen just cuts to black and goes to commercial or the episode ends and you have to wait to see what happens next?? it’s GENIUS
furthermore, the hunger games series as a whole is divided into a trilogy, but within that, divided into three sections each. and each section ends with an even bigger cliffhanger than the last. i see these, in the world of television, as mini season breaks within the larger three “seasons” of the show (that being the whole trilogy). here are the first three endings of all the sections. imagine you’re watching this on television and these lines drop, and then you have to wait several more weeks for the next installment. you would be climbing the walls for it. part 1 (the tributes): “beeta blushes beet red and stammers out. “because. because. she came here with me.” part 2 (the games): “before i can stop myself, i call out Peeta’s name.” part 3 (the victor) (the end of the book): “i take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when i will finally have to let go.” those are ALL cliffhangers and make it impossible to stop reading.
(also, we can talk about the fact that all three of those beats are focused on peeta, the one who seems to most intrinsically understand dramatic timing and using his words to create a narrative.)
anyway that is why it is my personal and impassioned belief that the hunger games should have been adapted for television rather than film, because it would have been far more in keeping with the spirit, tone, and pacing of the novels to adapt it into a serialized form rather than a 2 hour film.
Catching fire is my favorite movie, just like it is for many fans because it was cinematographically and acting wise incredible. Josh Hutcherson does a great job conveying vulnerability in Peeta, and Sam Claflin is great at showing how cocky, but smart Finnick is. And ofc Jennifer Lawrence. I only have to think about her scenes right after Cinna dies where she goes from absolute shock to sadness to *game face* in literal seconds and you can actually SEE the transition. Same with the end of the movie where Gale tells her a district 12 is no more and her face changes from despair to panic to anger and we know Katniss is going to kill Snow, even thought she hasn’t said anything. The film still has its faults...most important being making Plutarch into this mastermind who put Katniss in the Quill on purpose vs it being a shock to him in the books and the complete lack of info about the existence of District 13. Because there’s no Bonnie and Twill, it comes out of no where in the movies when Haymitch tells Katniss D13 exists and they are flying there rn. But still, I think the writing and performances (and a little bit of google for non readers) makes up for these mistakes.
Now let’s talk about Mockingjay. I hold the unpopular opinion that it was OK to split the last book into 2. I know it was a purely financial decision but I think knowing how much is covered in mockingjay and the absence of an inner monologue, splitting the book into two movies ideally allows to tell the full story without it feeling rushed or confusing. With this in mind, why did the last two movies suck??
Mainly, the writing. The writing was literally terrible. all of the subtext that the writers used in catching fire to portray katnisses/ other characters emotions is gone in mockingjay. everything is stated. I only have to think back to Part 1 where Peeta says “they’re coming katniss” instead of just “district 13, dead by morning!” to prove my point. That moment in the movies was nearly laughable. Not only do they explicitly make peeta state that there’s going to be a bombing of D13, but then Haymitch has to say “that was a warning”. There’s absolutely no subtext. And don’t even get me started on that weird zoom call between president snow and Katniss while they try to get out Peeta from the capitol. It’s just a whole lot of : “President snow, president snow it’s katniss” as of the Wifi is bad or something.
and ofcourse Finnick. It felt like character assasination the way they dealt with him in part 1. In the books, Finnick is a literal depressive MESS. He can’t leave the hospital or not be sedated for long periods of time because he’s absolutely lost it thinking of annie in the capitol. In fact he wishes that she’s dead because he can’t stop thinking that his actions are going to end up in her getting tortured. It’s incredibly painful to watch Finnick, who’s so confident and assured in himself, the comedic relief and most importantly someone Katniss genuinely likes, become this shell of himself barely able to be conscious because the love of his life is held captive. in the movies, he’s just...boeing. In fact he seems quite put together, but just not contributing much to the scenes he’s in. and we know these actors are capable cuz we have seen it before in the previous movie. But the writing removed all subtext and ruined the characters. Even Coin, who all of us dislike in the books, who constantly reminds Katniss of who’s in charge by torturing her prep team, publicly holding her to her role of the mockingjay etc, is not as ruthless...in fact she’s kind and seems like she wants to be a benevolent leader who cares about Katnisses wellbeing. This is why people who didn’t read the books are so confused about why Katniss shoots coin instead of snow.
I think the easiest way that Mockingjay could’ve knocked it out of the park like Catching fire did is would have been to show Peetas POV in the capitol. Instead of boring scenes filled with empty space and meaningless conversations to fill the movie time in part 1, adding in scenes of peetas capitivity would make the movie more intense and allow viewers to connect with the changed Peeta and feel for him. especially with how big of a role he plays in part 2 and in Katnisses recovery...it would have been nice to see his captivity so the audience could feel how broken and guilty Katniss feels about Peeta and the importance of his own recovery post the war.
ben barnes and jessie mei li being *friendship goals*
peeta mellark is a strategic compulsive liar and i love him for it
See guys, but the thing is... Prim would be dead regardless of whether Gale and Beetee had designed those bombs in the first place.
exactly! it was gales design but who encouraged a child (cuz gale is 18 but he’s still a kid compared to everyone else) to create plans for bombs? put him in an environment that rewarded him for his anger with weapons of destruction??everyone loves to say gale killed prim!! gale is a criminal!! etc etc but there’s a lot of nuance in recognizing that Coin and beetee literally made him into a child soldier fueled by (rightful) anger against the capitol!
It should be Peeta.
“You and me, we made a deal to try and save him. Remember? Try and remember. ”
“Did you love Annie right away, Finnick?” I ask.
“No.” A long time passes before he adds, “She crept up on me.”
