Light answers a tough question
I know we make jokes about Edwin’s harem but it’s deeply tragic how every man who has ever desired Edwin romantically has also hurt him in profound ways. Simon is the reason Edwin was sent to hell. Monty abused his trust and nearly got him and Charles killed. The Cat King manipulated his repressed attraction and leashed him like a pet, keeping him trapped in a town with a murderous witch. All the while, the man Edwin actually loves, the man who has been nothing but kind and gentle and devoted towards him, does not love him back. Not in that way. Something Something Love is a punishment for not having been strong enough to remain alone.
thank you to this tweet for giving me the perfect opportunity to ramble about edwin’s outfit during the confession scene because oh how i love it
the juxtaposition between these two scenes and what edwin wears is so good because he goes from an outfit he chose and put together when he planned to confess vs a blood stained shirt when he actually did but what i think a lot of people don’t realise is that edwin isn’t wearing pyjamas when he’s in hell, he’s wearing undergarments. he’s in an undershirt and drawers, which was typical edwardian underwear and it is such a perfect way to show how vulnerable he is in that moment. so often clothes are used as armour or a way to make oneself feel more confident and that’s exactly what edwin is doing when he made himself look, as niko says, really nice. a nice outfit and feeling good about yourself can go a long way in making yourself feel more ready to, i don’t know, confess your love to your best friend of 30 years. now compare that to what edwin’s wearing when he actually confesses and you immediately feel a sense of vulnerability and almost nakedness in that situation because the modern day equivalent is standing there in your boxers. all of that armour, all that confidence is gone, he is both literally and metaphorically bare. in the end it’s just edwin, in the most basic sense, baring his soul to charles and i think it’s so so beautiful
I'm still blown away by the implications of the entire scenario between Edwin and Simon in Hell.
We discover that "unfinished business" is not exclusively reserved for souls roaming the Earth.
Simon was sent to Hell by a demon, not Death. We don't know whether that was his intended afterlife designation or not, we never find out definitively.
However, his torture and the conversation he has with Edwin implies that he's kept there not necessarily because he deserves it, but because he believes he deserves it.
When Edwin appears, Simon finally, after over a century, has the chance to come clean. He struggles to do so until Edwin finds the page with S + E written in the margin. But once he starts, it all comes out. He needs Edwin to understand--maybe not his actions, but at least his motivations. He needs Edwin to know he would never have actually hurt him on purpose. He would never have sent Edwin to Hell. And honestly, he needs to hear from someone that it's OK for him to be the way that he is--that being gay doesn't have to be torture, because he believes it does.
And Edwin takes all that in and does the one thing I imagine he never thought he'd do: he forgives Simon. Not only that, he frees him.
And in that moment, both of them were freed. Both of them finished something that was over a century in the making. Both of them finally let go of their self-imposed torture.
Edwin was Simon's unfinished business.
for what comes next
you know the drill folks, now up on my IN/PRNT!
