dead boy detectives | the devil’s after both of us
very specific type of character present in both dead boy detectives and a marvellous light
dead boy detectives | no one deserves to disappear
dead boy detectives | am i right back where i started?
dead boy detectives | can we live in this tangled mess forever?
dead boy detectives | a different kind of beautiful
dead boy detectives | i have seen too much pain
dead boy detectives | it’s pulling me back
do you think edwin never saw any red flags in the way charles talked about his father not just because charles was so good at hiding how it effected him and the true extent of it by only making off hand comments here and there, but also because edwin grew up in a time where corporal punishment in schools and hitting children as punishment was especially normalised? because i do. corporal punishment and caning wasn’t banned in state schools until 1986 and in private schools until 1998 and we can assume that being in a seemingly private boarding school meant it was something edwin absolutely experienced, as it was in all schools and probably homes when he was a child, and something we can assume charles probably experienced depending on how strict the school remained up until his death but that’s not really relevant. what i’m trying to say is that hitting children and pretty brutal punishment by today’s standards was incredibly commonplace for edwin, it was an everyday occurrence, so no wonder he didn’t bat an eye at charles’ offhand comments about his fathers temper. on top of that george has said that in his mind edwin’s father wasn’t a very caring man to his son which isn’t surprising considering the time period and wouldn’t have aided him in realising that something was wrong with the way charles’ father treated him (always assuming he didn’t know the extent of it, of course). edwin’s obliviousness to how much charles’ father hurt and also effected him comes from an early 1900s perspective where a comment or two about his fathers temper wouldn’t be as alarming as it was to crystal, because aren’t all fathers cold and uncaring? aren’t all children disciplined with force?
hello tonight i’m sad and thinking about this shot of simon and of his smile and how genuine it was and how he was so like edwin in so many ways, how he was just another scared boy who was so desperate to know that he wasn’t alone or different or wrong but who didn’t have the words to articulate it to edwin and how he was suffocating under the weight of societal norms and expectations and how he tried his best to stay afloat but eventually gave up that fight and became like all the other boys around him because sometimes it’s easier to pretend to be predator than continue being prey because being prey hurts so damn much and if the world itself is against the very thing that makes you you what good does being yourself do you?
dead boy detectives | can you fill it?

thank you to this tweet for giving me the perfect opportunity to ramble about edwin’s outfit during the confession scene because oh how i love it
the juxtaposition between these two scenes and what edwin wears is so good because he goes from an outfit he chose and put together when he planned to confess vs a blood stained shirt when he actually did but what i think a lot of people don’t realise is that edwin isn’t wearing pyjamas when he’s in hell, he’s wearing undergarments. he’s in an undershirt and drawers, which was typical edwardian underwear and it is such a perfect way to show how vulnerable he is in that moment. so often clothes are used as armour or a way to make oneself feel more confident and that’s exactly what edwin is doing when he made himself look, as niko says, really nice. a nice outfit and feeling good about yourself can go a long way in making yourself feel more ready to, i don’t know, confess your love to your best friend of 30 years. now compare that to what edwin’s wearing when he actually confesses and you immediately feel a sense of vulnerability and almost nakedness in that situation because the modern day equivalent is standing there in your boxers. all of that armour, all that confidence is gone, he is both literally and metaphorically bare. in the end it’s just edwin, in the most basic sense, baring his soul to charles and i think it’s so so beautiful

Is it undergarments? Because I thought so too, but my research shows so called union suits (one pieces that were worn around 1910 to 1920) with two pieces only coming later. And so I thought they are pajamas, and my wife just pointed out that he died I his pyjamas?
His underwear is relevant to my interest 🥰🤣.
But I agree about everything else!
i’m not an expert but there is a lot of variation! some sources (which aren’t very good, i’ve struggled to find good articles about this) i’ve seen show one pieces that are full length, some one pieces that are shorts and sleeveless and some that are two piece shirt and drawers and so i truly don’t know the exact answer, because not every man would have worn the exact same style of union suit etc but the reason i didn’t (and don’t) think it’s pyjamas is because we do see their pyjamas. from what i can tell online pyjamas were typically a full length nightshirt or a full sleeve shirt and full leg trousers. in the flashbacks to edwin’s death we see the boys wearing said full nightshirt
this is the clearest shot of it there is and you can clearly see the full length nightshirt, not the shirt and trousers/drawers that both edwin and simon are wearing in hell
and this shot of edwin shows that he’s wearing the undershirt that he’s in in hell underneath his nightshirt and so you can assume they’re wearing the drawers underneath as well because otherwise they wouldn’t be wearing anything under those loose shirts and i highly doubt that. the fact that they are wearing nightshirts/pyjamas over the top is what made me think “oh those are his undergarments” because if those were his pyjamas why would they be wearing the nightshirts. i also think it could just be a practicality thing, like a shirt and drawers is much more comfortable to wear on a set than a one piece in terms of like using the bathroom etc. i think it’s a very interesting topic and either way, whether it’s pyjamas or undergarments, my point still stands in terms of the symbolism of what he’s wearing and i am obsessed with it.
