James and Jeremy during the nominees for the National Television Award 2006
Update: Turns out the complainer didn't even realize that Dustin has the same condition as Gaten, deliberately done so by the writers once they met him, and half of their argument is based on "wElL tHeY sHoUlD hAvE gIvEn HiM tHe SaMe CoNdItIoN" and completely missing the fact that the writers did.And not only did they, but they mentioned it and/ or showed it on more than one occasion.
How embarrassing for them.
This just in, an actor with a disability choosing to make accommodations for himself or changes to his appearance which do not make his disability obvious, is actually ableism and we must infantalize him and assume someone else made him do it because it would never occur to him to do something like that himself.
He shouldn't do something which may improve his ability to eat or his lisp (which he has spoken out about causing problems for him and reducing his chance of getting roles), or maybe even just change his appearance to the way he might want, instead he should remain an obvious symbol of representation. Because while you claim that other people forced him to wear dental prosthetics, and that they should not be allowed to do so, it is actually fine for you to insist he not be able to wear dental prosthetics, because you want to display his disability, even if that is against his will.
It needs to be discussed that "Stranger Things" was ableist and contributed to the ableist mindset that disabled people should not be actually included by hiding Gaten Matarazzo's disability.
They may have stopped after season 2 (I haven't watched it yet but that's what I've found in my research) but they still did it.
He does have fake teeth in S2 (not sure if it was his decision or the Duffers but apparently it was done to help with his lisp). He chose not to have the prosthetic teeth in S3 , and afterwards underwent several surgeries irl to bring down his adult teeth and implant permanent dental prosthetics so he no longer has any gaps. I can't say for S2 but everything after that seems to be based entirely on Gaten's decisions on what he wants to do with his own body. His CCD is mentioned (by both Dustin and Steve) across the seasons, as well as referencing the other sides of it such as his lack of collar bones.
Dustin wasn't originally written to have CCD, they added it to his character after asking Gaten's permission. They didn't need to even mention it if they were going to try to hide it as you claim they were.
You can't force an actor not to do what he wants to do with his own body because you want him to be a more visible symbol of representation
The IT Crowd // S02E04: The Dinner Party
Rewatching the IT Crowd knowing about Richard Ayoade's dislike of physical contact and wondering whos decision it was to have Roy and Jen physically touching and dragging Moss around at every opportunity
"We asked finn to carry a lot of emotional weight" bro said double it and give it to gaten
Never seen the musical or really shipped it but why am I getting such strong tragic genderflipped Henderhop vibes from this song
gay/bi mike wheeler discourse is so hilarious from my pov. I'm here sitting on my bench watching you all going at each other's troaths virtually, eating popcorn and knowing that Mike is straight, that the Duffer Brothers are lazy and they wrote Will to be in love with Mike because they wanted to take the safer route : sad gay kid pining over his straight best friend. They didn't add a new character for Will in season four because it wasn't suitable for Will and Mike storyline. If Argyle wouldn't have existed and in his place there would have been the new Will's love interest, what the fuck would Mike have done for eight episodes ? Will's storyline would have been different, he couldn't be Mike's counselor. Will and Mike's storylines in season four are attached not because there is this big plot twist around the corner and by*ler will be endgame, it's because of cheap, lazy writing. They didn't know what to do with both of them. So it's really funny reading this whole online discourse "Mike is clearly gay" "Mike is perfect bi representation" when i am here with a bitter taste in my mouth thinking that in good hands, in hands that really cared about queer identity and queer representation Will Byers would have been treated differently.
By the way i'll delete every reply, nothing personal, it's just that i am not open for a debate. This is my opinion and if season five will prove me wrong i'll be extremely happy about it, however for now nothing is going to change my mind
look at me being so right in broken english
Dustin sobbing and begging Steve not to go because he's terrified of losing him too. Being shot would hurt less than this.
Gaten is such an underrated actor fr.
This scene made me cry like a baby
Everyone enjoying the new episode?
:D
Are the bylers/ conspiracy theorists seriously doing it again? Christ alive.
It isn't even Apple Tree Yard at this point, its just regular programming
The funny thing is, if your two guys had just made out, you'd all be saying it was an amazing finale. It wasn't the best ending, but its no where near as bad as youre all making it out to be, you're just mad you were wrong about your "evidence". Just read a fic and deal with it, you were wrong.
Would you mind letting people have hope? That's a huge part of conformitygate, the hope.
Obviously everyone's opinions will differ but for a good lot of us we greatly disliked the finale and found it, not just god awful writing but strangely out of charcter and a lot of inconsistencies. (It sounds like you've seen the proof but were scared to have hope because you didn't want it to shatter in your face and be made a fool so when your fear was in the right you decided to be what your anxiety said was stopping you and made fun of the people who dared to dream of representation and deeper analysis.)
We can all admit that the show started out good then was starting to fall off seaason 4.
Conformity gate was a circulation to have hope that it's quality would return and that they didn't hype up a five minute fight against a monster that looked like female genetalia and was defeated with a flare gun and an abuser with an off center redemption arch.
But yes you do pose some good advice at the end about reading fanfiction which is more likely to redeem our favorite charcters and hve a genuinely good reason behind what we have used as conformitygate edvidence.
Hope this doesn't come off too rude! I'm just trying to explain the deal behind conformitygate and how, yes, indeed we would be slightly happier at the ending if the two boys made out because that means that A. Will wasn't just a gay charcter for the sake of DEI points and B. Mike actually had something deeper going on with his charcter and he wasn't just an asshole and a shitty (boy)friend.
I understand the thinking behind conformitygate, which is exactly why I think it is so stupid. It isn't anything to do with "letting people have hope"- if it isn't real, it isn't real, no matter of hope will change that.
You can hope all you want that it isn't the real end, but actually believing it is an entirely different matter. Conformitygate (and Byler) made up all of its evidence, based on absolutely nothing and no proof from anything. You can say that Byler has to be real because or a road sign, or blue and yellow, but bylers made that up? That wasn't based on anything, you can't create "evidence" and then say that there is evidence to back up your theories. It was never going to happen. It is not real.
Yes I know you'd be happier if they were gay, I've been a shipper for many ships for years, and many have not become canon. But instead of demanding that the creators change their plans because I latched on to a made up theory, I accept thats what their vision was, then I go make my own fanon or read fics. Thats what fandom is. And that is the problem here- not the wanting it to happen, the demanding it happen and the outcry when it didn't.
(Also please don't make assumptions, I've never "seen the proof but was scared to hope", I've never shipped byler (nor have I shipped mileven before that starts), I knew it would never happen but I have seen the fans latching onto tiny nothing points to back up their theory so I knew that the outcry would be huge when it didn't happen. I was never "scared to hope", in fact I was actively looking forward to it not happening so the self righteous morons who accuse everyone of homophobia for not shipping one particular gay ship would be proven wrong)
I personally think that, while Will deserved better than having to come out like that, and a epilogue boyfriend without any characterisation, he should not and never was going to end up with Mike, a character who has never been confirmed as anything other than interested in women. As for Mike, I think people put far too much faith in Finn's acting ability and gave him credit for supposedly hinting with microexpressions, when actually I think he mentally checked out a while back and gave a complete nothing performance.
People have put far too much emphasis on those two (three if the milevens are involved) characters and those actors, at the expense of other characters and the great performances from the rest of the cast (did Caleb or Gaten need cgi tears? No but mr no expression is the one everyone was praising before the season came out)
The funny thing is, if your two guys had just made out, you'd all be saying it was an amazing finale. It wasn't the best ending, but its no where near as bad as youre all making it out to be, you're just mad you were wrong about your "evidence". Just read a fic and deal with it, you were wrong.
Give it a day and people will start to realize that it wasn't deliberate acting choices on behalf of mr single-cgi-tear, he just wasn't any good this season
even if conformitygate wasnt real, its role in media is genuinely something for the history books. somehow this community was able to rally together and do a final fuck you to the mainstream homophobic producers of the most popular show in the world rn, and bring the entire audience down along with them.
if i get queerbaited, you do too. if im disappointed, you do too. if i have to suffer, you do too. we get called noise, and we'll get everyone to scream what we've been saying so you finally have to listen. thats beautiful.
stranger things really did uplift the voices of the marginalised! just not in the way we expected 🫶
No, you didn't deliver any fuck yous to the producers, you've just made an entire fandom look like a bunch of complete idiots who would believe anything if it could mean their two special men would kiss on tv.
They do not give a single fuck, they're probably laughing at you all
Everyone saying that at least the Duffers will feel bad about conformitygate- no they won't. They won't and don't care. They will probably never even think about it again unless they're asked in an interview whats the weirdest thing a fan has ever done. You have not impacted their lives in the slightest, you've just made yourselves look stupid and haemorrhaged most of the respect the ga ever had for shippers
