The problem with tutorials and how to fix it
Usually: You wanna play a game or use a service but there is a tutorial you have to crawl through before you get to the real thing.
Because: Designers wanna make sure the user knows how to use the product, they give you the option to turn off the tutorial at the begining if you feel confident.
Ideally: You get to the real thing right away, you can experiment but anytime you feel lost you can turn on the tutorial.
Reason is: Let’s find the jobs-to-be-done by a user-centered approach. If you try something new it’s rarely because you wanna learn to use it but to actually use it. Most games and services are part of a genre we are comfortable with so we aproach it with confidence, of course tutorials are there for a reason because we actually need them, but we have to want them too. So let your user fail first, after that he/she will be happy to see the tutorial instead of being annoyed by it.
