Keys to Successful Management Consulting
By Daniel Goldsmith
Management consulting can be an appealing career choice for individuals with specific and in-depth expertise in a given area of business organization. Management consultants are hired for a variety of purposes, but most often a firm hires a consultant because they need to make some kind of change for which they lack the in-house expertise. Good management consultants solve problems. Whether that problem involves the implementation of a new IT strategy to increase efficiency, training staff in the use of a new system or procedure, developing a company restructuring plan, or helping with downsizing efforts, successful management consultants help their customers arrive at new and more effective solutions.
Providing that type of service requires the management consultant to be right all the time. Management consultants need to have a detailed grasp of the problems and concerns facing the company, as well as its goals, vision, and culture. Extensive research is always required, delving into similar situations at other firms, scholarly literature, and practical examples. Information presented to senior management needs to be tailored to the problems of the company, with solutions explained clearly and the pros and cons of the situation presented fairly. Flexibility also makes up a major prerequisite to successful consulting. A client may or may not know exactly what is needed to solve the problem.
In some cases, the client may not even truly understand what the problem is. A management consultant needs to incorporate feedback from the client and change direction as the need arises. Finally, good management consultants develop trust with their clients. The client needs to feel that the consultant has his or her best interests at heart and possesses the necessary competencies to find the ideal solution. Building trust also requires a certain degree of interpersonal skills, so consultants must be able to work readily with a wide range of personality styles.
