What is Sacred?
On Thursday 17 April 2014 I was initiated into a new luxurious “secret society”. Exclusive guests were asked: What is Sacred? Regal decor, unique performances and delicious champagne was the order of the night. I developed the concept, visual identity and marketing strategy for the Shangri-La Pudong.

For Gold Panda I Negotiated the venue booking contract with New Zealand based promotion company Madcap Touring. Prepared production requirement information for the venue staff.
I assisted the stage designer for this show who required additional staging, props, visuals and audio equipment.
Gold Panda (Derwin R. Powers) cut his teeth remixing and re-editing for the likes of Little Boots, Telepathe, Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco, Health and The Field, and building a buzz both offline and online, he pulled his aesthetic into sharp focus through his debut album Lucky Shiner, mixed by Simian Mobile Discos James Shaw and released via Ghostly International. Matching glossy outdoor synth textures with stuttering repetitive sample loops, bass so buoyant it virtually levitates, cybernetic drum patterns and evocative field recordings, Lucky Sinner won him acclaim from the likes of the BBC, The Fader, Pitchfork, NME, Spin Magazine and Drowned In Sound.

Omnipotent Youth Society performed as part of the lantern festival throughout New Zealand. I worked closely with Asia Foundation New Zealand to produce a club show for the band. I arranged supports, back-line, promotion & production. I hosted the band and their management team during there time in Wellington. This was my 3rd time working with Asia Foundation showcasing acts from China, previous events include Long Shen Dao (Beijing) & Askar Grey Wolf (Xinjiang).
OYS play to packed houses in Beijing and have won a raft of awards, including Band of the Year at the Chinese Music media Awards. What differentiates OYS from other Chinese bands is their focus on the lyrics of their songs, which are rooted in their home town of Shijiazhuang, the grimy, industrial capital of Hebei Province.
Omnipotent Youth Society travelled to New Zealand with the support of the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Cathay Pacific. Omnipotent Youth Society Noisey Profile on Vimeo.
I negotiated with New Zealand's La De Da music festival organiser to book DJ Yoda. I promoted the event on behalf of the venue; Coordinated attendance information and technical requirements between La De Da staff and venue staff.
This show required extensive audio-visual installation resulting is a world class touring event.
Duncan Beiny aka DJ Yoda is no ordinary scratch DJ. His seminal How To Cut & Paste series showcased a tongue-in-cheek mixing style that prompted Q Magazine to declare him “one of the ten DJs to see before you die”, whilst Hip Hop Connection voted him “one of the top three DJs in the world”.
Trail-blazing into the world of the audio-visual he pioneered a new artform, using cutting edge technology that he has been instrumental in developing, to scratch and mix visuals on top of his DJ sets in the clubs. Starting out by re-scoring both ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ on the festival circuit in 2003 and 2004, DJ Yoda went on to transform the average night out into a fusion of clubbing and the movies. His recent AV tours have included “DJ Yoda Goes To The Movies”, “Magic Cinema Show” and “National Video Vacation”.
Godspeed you! Black Emperor sold out San Francisco Bath House Venue so the show was moved to a larger partner venue. As a business we supported and assisted the venue change to accommodate a larger audience. This was integral to maintain a positive relationship with the Australian agent Heathen Skulls Touring.
Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Godspeed you! Black Emperor are a musical collective that rose to prominence in 1994, via their own record label Constellation records, as a fresh voice is the somewhat stagnant, and very much derivative, industry labeled, post rock scene. Their name was taken from a 70’s black n white documentary about the notorious Japanese biker gang the Black Emperors. After a string of highly acclaimed studio albums, all of which help set new standards in post rock and instrumental music, Godspeed you! Black Emperor went on hiatus so that their various band members could explore new territories in their countless other musical endeavor, some of which being A Silver Mt Zion, Set Fire to Flames, Fly Pan Am and Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!” Godspeed! You Black Emperor have been consistently presenting performance around the globe, most notable curating All Tomorrows Parties in the UK in 2011. In February 2013, for the first time EVER, New Zealand will finally got to experience Godspeed you! Black Emperor.
Iron Lung were looking to play an unconventional house party show. After logistic requirements (P.A. / Backline) challenged local supports of the band so I arranged SFBH to host this D.I.Y touring act. Even without a profile in New Zealand Iron Lung was a great success with local support acts. Lots of good will was generated in supporting this event and the band were amazing.
The institution known as IRON LUNG will be returning to the southern hemisphere once again in January 2013 for a run of shows across Australia, and for the first time New Zealand. The USA hardcore power violence duo have devastated audiences around the world for the past 14 years and have continually blown minds with a slew of records unrivaled in brutality. The gentlemen will be bringing their savage live show and their disarming sense of humour once again for your enjoyment.
I worked closely with Mystery Girl to secure a Wellington date & support act for Dirty Projectors. I developed a strong relationship with Mystery Girl, being a key client I offered advise and honest pricing for potential upcoming shows.
Weaving siren-like three-part harmonies with their crystalline and curious arrangements, the Dirty Projectors’ magical live performances are an unguarded ode to melody – compelling in their skill, and overflowing with soul.
To write the album, frontman David Longstreth decamped to remote Delaware County, four hours northwest of New York to dream up seventy potential tracks across a sprawling twelve months. Joined periodically by his band – guitarist and lead female vocalist Amber Coffman, bassist Nat Baldwin, drummer Brian McOmber and vocalist Haley Dekle – they rehearsed and recorded the full-length in the A-frame attic of his temporary upstate home. Across operatic song cycles (2005’s The Getty Address), diverse collaborations (with Björk and David Byrne no less), and wild re-workings (Rise Above, an interpretation of Black Flag’s classic album Damaged), Dirty Projectors have never shied from concept or challenge – proving themselves as likely to play on Letterman as with the LA Philharmonic at Disney Hall.
I worked closely with MAZDEF productions on Action Bronson. Here are the results (warning EXPLICIT MATERIAL).
An ex-chef, of Albanian descent, Action Bronson captured the imagination of hip hop fans and took the genre to places it hadnt been in years.
His considerable physical presence and often bizarre lyrics - drawing on obscure wrestling references, fine foods and "blunts the size of Mutumbo's arm" have earned him a worldwide fan base and a cult following.
Through collaborations with artists such as Ghostface Killah, ASAP Rocky, Danny Brown, Odd Future, Riff Raff, Party Supplies and Harry Fraud, Bronson has managed to release a musically diverse and prolific catalogue in a very short time - signing a deal with Warner Brothers Music group this year.
Those seeking a new hero for hip hop amongst a sea of identical rappers are now flocking to Bronson - a hulking figure with a resplendent orange beard, fluro shades and two joints burning at once, waving a freak flag banner high above all of his competition.
I worked closely with Mystery Girl to secure a Wellington date for Grimes. I also managed merchandise sales and stock.
The work of Claire Boucher, GRIMES is a project that has gained notoriety since its inception back in early–2010. Moving to Montreal from Vancouver in 2006, she developed GRIMES among the city’s burgeoning DIY scene; a scene where both punk ethos and pop music collide. On her 4AD debut Visions — which came out March 12th 2012 and was proudly distributed in New Zealand by Rhythmethod — is her fourth release in less than two years and countless shows have been performed in this time, both helping to build much intrigue as to what’s next. With her creative bent being both musical and visual, she draws on the arts of 2D, performance, dance, video and sound, weaving them all together to strong rhythmic eff ect, incorporating infl uences as wide as Enya, TLC and Aphex Twin, whilst drawing from genres like New Jack Swing, IDM, New Age,K– pop, Industrial and glitch. The result is a record that is both otherworldly and futuristic.
After selling out his last Australian tour, Omar and his band return! Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group (featuring members of The Mars Volta, At The Drive In, and Le Butcherettes) Like our own homegrown Nick Cave before him, Omar Rodriguez Lopez is a World-renowned artist whose talents go far beyond the musical landscape he’s widely celebrated for. Coming to prominence in the early 90’s, Omar made his mark as a guitarist in the ground break post-hardcore band At The Drive In. In the early 2000’s he cemented his name as a music force as guitarist and producer in the Grammy Award winning progressive psych/kraut rock influenced ensemble The Mars Volta. Now in the 2010’s, Omar has established himself as a World Class solo artist that has something vital and relevant to say, sonically speaking. In between all of his musical endeavors, Omar has been prolific as a label manager, actor, producer, and film director. He presently owns and runs his own music and film production company, aptly entitled, Omar Rodriguez Lopez Productions. In 2010 Omar directed his first feature length film “The Sentimental Engine Slayer”, which received rave reviews at Film Festivals all around the World. This December Omar Rodriguez Lopez will be returning to Australia with his band playing headline performances in all major Cities, he’ll also be co-headlining the Cherry Rock festival in Melbourne.
An exercise in stargazing synthetics, stumbling rhythmic thuds, incidental found sound, and ghostly falsetto voice, Baths is the musical project of American electronic musician Will Wiesenfeld. A key member of the new wave of Anticon Records artists, Baths filters rugged MPC hip-hop production techniques through a chillwave filter. Baths musical oeuvre connects him with both contemporary sound surfers Toro Y Moi and Washed Out, and the modern international bass archipelago beat movement which has given us Flying Lotus, Hype Williams, Samiyam and their ilk. Described by The Guardians Paul Lester as like, J Dilla playing around with the Pavement and Prince catalogues, a Baths performance is a decadent sonic treat. In line with this, his debut album Cerulean got the coveted Pitchfork.com co-sign with an honorable mention on the 2010 Album of the Year list, and more recent sophomore release Pop Music / False B-Sides is also headed for equal acclaim.
JOJO MAYER - PERFECT BALANCE NZ CLINIC TOUR - WELLINGTON RSS
From Zurich, the son of Bass player Vali Mayer, Jojo spent much of his early childhood on the road in Europe and the Far East. At the age of 2 he got his first drum set, and he made his first public performance in Hong Kong at three! By 18 he had joined Monty Alexander's group touring major festivals in Europe (North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux, Nice, Antibes and Athens); that led to gigs with Dizzy Gillespie & Nina Simone, while introducing him to larger International Jazz audiences.
Moving to New York City in 1991, he soon built up a number of writing and production credits for his significant live and studio work. He also ran the popular Prohibited Beatz live electronica party in NYC from 1996-2001. Jojo Mayer is known for bringing together jazz, drum and bass, jungle, and other influences. He is also famous for his ability to play the rhythms of programmed jungle drum 'n' bass music on acoustic drums, terming this technique "reverse engineering", a phrase borrowed from computing. He executes this approach using various methods such as the Heel-toe bass drum technique, the Moeller stroke, and the "pull-out" or "push-pull" accent which takes the beat on the rebound. Using these techniques, he can play beats at astonishing speeds. A few of his main influences are Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette and Buddy Rich.
He played with the guitarist David Fiuczynski in the avant-garde pop rock band Screaming Headless Torsos and in the fusion jazz band, Intergalactic Maiden Ballet. He also performed with such luminaries as Meshell Ndegeocello, Vernon Reid's Science Project, DJ Spooky, the Vienna Art Orchestra, Wayne Krantz, Gerald Veasley, John Zorn, James Blood Ulmer, Chico Freeman, Dhaffer Yousef, John Medeski, Hiram Bullock, Depart, Friedrich Gulda, Harry Sokal, Mike Stern & Wah Wah Watson. Jojo is a skilled clinician who continues to appear in numerous music festivals and sells out clinics all around the world.
After an epic 6 hour DJ set last year, UK producer Ikonika is coming back to Wellington, this time for an exclusive show for at San Francisco Bathhouse on Saturday, October 6th, presented by Ex.D and Girl Trouble. It takes a lot to get musical titans like NME, DJ Mag, and the Guardian to sit up and take notice, yet Ikonika, a young woman from West London, has done exactly that. Releasing her debut album in 2010 on the legendary Hyperdub label, Ikonika received critical acclaim for, Contact, Want, Love, Have, with The Guardian listing as one of their top ten albums of 2010. She was described by The Observer as a rare female face in the male-dominated world of electronic music, Ikonika melds the genres juddering bass with Aphex Twin-style melodic mischief-making”. Wellingtonian Riki Gooch has been adding his groove to the music of some of our brightest talents over the past 10 years, notably including as one third of the legendary TrinityRoots. In recent times he has been developing a style and sensibility all of his own, releasing a debut album provocatively titled ‘Great News for the Modern Man’, under the Eru Dangerspiel moniker. That percussion-driven project recently exploded into the form of a massive live concert staged at Auckland’s Town Hall. The concert featured nearly 20 musicians plus a small choir in an extravaganza of sound that was complemented by an impressive AV display. Fondly considered as the fourth member of Wellington future soul band Electric Wire Hustle, you may have already witnessed some of the audio magic of Benny Tones without realizing it. Benny is a producer in his own and his album ‘Chrysalis’ speaks for itself, a combination of laid back beat music and New Zealand Soul. ‘Chrysalis’ represents Benny Tone’s re-introduction as a producer and features a diverse host of vocal and instrumental collaborators including Electric Wire Hustle’s Mara TK and many more.
