With great power comes great responsibility

I'm feeling an increasing dissonance in life between my day to day existence, my career, my young kids on the one hand and what is happening in the world, what I read and witness online. I feels to me that nearly everyone is living in deep denial about the state of the world, the worsening state of the world. There seems to be resigned acceptance of the gentle slide towards anarchy and / or apocalypse. Does this sound extreme or over the top? As a species our expectations of our leaders are so incredibly low and so we accept the same answers to the same problems and we accept failure because we have been failed so many times. Despite all of this I am optimistic and wrestling with my responsibility and to be honest lacking the courage and potentially the ability to sound the alarm. I need to think through my theses and I need to do it in a way that is palatable to my colleagues and clients or at least I think I do. Already cowardly. The title of this post is not about me but it's about the mega corps and how they have a responsibility to use their influence for the greater good. I think there is opportunity in this regard and also necessity.

Naive 2.0

I keep thinking about to the early 2000s and the emergence of Web 2.0.

It was a neat confluence of technology, communications and politics - two of which formed my career and the other a topic of lifelong interest.

It was all about openness, transparency, de-flowering the traditional media, ideas and democracy. We now call it social media.

Looking back it surprises me that ‘we’ were so naive to put our hope in transparency as an antidote to corruption and greed.

Cut to 2019.

We now know more about the way the world works - thanks to digital media, social media, Wikileaks and the like - but it strikes me that the effect has been to normalise corruption and greed as a part of life.

It’s always been there but it’s not enough to reveal the behaviour of shameless, entitled and cruel people.

In fact, it has lead to a media economy fuelled by outrage and headlines, which has given rise to the biggest headline chasers, antagonists and attention whores on the fucking planet.

People without principle who manipulate and lie to gain power at the expense of everyone and everything else.

We thought that free information and ubiquous access to the tools of media production would allow us to “Take Back Control”.

The ultimate irony is that this very phrase and notion has been used against us.
