Can you tell us more about this "Armand" person? He seems like a character!

Read my book, it says plenty about him.

I think he has a lot of thoughts about rigid structures. I'd be curious to learn more about how these developed within him, though I have my theories. Research into his Coven led to some interesting ideas about how vampires try to regulate themselves. These regulations seemed to impact his thought process greatly.

pretty specific question here - will we ever get a follow up on armand? interview seems to leave him in a pretty bad spot, so i'm curious if you'll wrap back around to him after all this lestat business

If he wants to do a follow-up, it'll happen, but I'll let him come to me with the request.

Armand has so much in him, if I can risk talking about him. There is so much intensity that could possibly connect all sorts of strands of history together. I think there could be a lot that could be used in a larger historical focus.

But again, only if he wants to. I'm not holding anyone hostage.

What's your dream vacation if money nor time were a factor? (Where would you go, what would you do, who would you go with if applicable, etc.)

Now that I can't as easily be killed, I could see some fun in more risky adventures to mountains and such. I mean, I don't like hiking, but if I learn the Cloud Gift eventually... I've been so many places because of work, that I can't really enjoy things if I return, because I just go back into work mode.

I like the coasts, I like the ocean. Not much of a tropics fan, but I appreciate some seaside cliffs.

What's your opinion on fanfiction?

Do whatever you want. I don't read it, but the concept amuses me. Most work is derivative of everything else, so no need to worry.

What’s the weirdest, out of the box thing that’s happened to you during an interview?

Interviewing a woman who was in a conspiracy murder in the late 80s, just before I hit it "big" (as big as I can get as an investigative journalist writing about AIDS). I was working for a news agency and needed a story. Pressed to the point where she threatened to shit on the desk and force me to eat it, and thus she got tazed before she could take her pants off.

As far as human interviews go, that was pretty odd. But in terms of vampires, all of Dubai was a strange fever-dream that just kept going and going. Thanks for the memories, but glad I'm not fearing for my life every second anymore.

Any tips on how to deal with teenage daughters?

My daughters didn't talk to me much during their teenage years. Or I didn't talk to them much. Either way, I don't think I'm the kind of guy who can give parenting advice.

I think a lot of teenagers are very frustrated with the state of their world, especially women. I feel like it is the prime time they grow into their political and psychological motives, or at least find a playground where they can test those ideas out. Perhaps just being open to their experimentation could be helpful. Obviously, I don't think I'd be the kind of guy to freak out if I found drugs or condoms in their room, but again... not much communication happening in those years.

I was helping with someone's shitty movie when I was a kid, they thought I'd play a good Nazi because I could speak more German than them, so I got typecasted. Ironic, given my family's actual history in the Old World.

you've been married twice...any advice you'd give your younger self?

Come out sooner. Stop being such a coward. Maybe do less coke and heroin.

I don't enjoy trying to think on questions like this, because even those answers ring hollow in the present. I've been given a new lease on life, a rare chance to live more authentically now than before. The past to me regularly feels detached, as if it happened to someone else. So trying to linger on some fake possibility of time travel is just a distraction from what's going on now.

why'd you pick such funny names for the guys in your book? armand? lestat?

Well, I mean, there are plenty of names we'd consider "weird" if we thought about them long enough. Names are just sounds that we use to identify our individuality from a group.

And those are the names those people chose for themself, or someone chose it for them.

"Armand" has it's origins in French, but has been used in various countries, everywhere from the States, to Armenia, over the past three centuries. Lestat seems to be derived from the French "Lestan." But I'm sure you know that variations exist everywhere. People want to be creative with malleable words.

If you want to talk to Lestat De Lioncourt as to why his mother named him that way, I'm sure you could bother him at his next concert.

I think I rub people the wrong way. You seem so confident in who you are. How do you do it?

It helps to live a good 70+ years, unfortunately. And even then, there was always a lack I felt. Maybe I still feel it. But only now have I even been comfortable being out as queer, despite... everything.

The confidence may be misplaced ego, or it may be just something of a front, I don't know. I'm sure people have their theories. But when I know I'm right, I like to come with receipts. So maybe having a good arsenal of secure information can help with confidence.

Live a little longer, and sometimes experience will give you more information on who you are and what you do.

How do you feel about people saying you're selling out over your "non fiction" vampire stories?

I think the bigger question here is this: can authors "sell out" in the first place?

Writing is generally not a lucrative profession. Many writers don't have the funds to be able to write exactly what they want all the time. Many have other jobs, work for agencies or companies with specific wants, or just have only so much time in the day to deal with the whole human-body thing. If an author finds financial success in something that is more wide-reaching, who are we to judge? They're surviving, and have found a way to do so.

I wasn't in the best situation financially before Interview. Most of my retirement money that I cobbled together from my parent's estates was spent on medicine. So, no matter how it's seen, I'm grateful for what Interview has given me, both in terms of financial safety and the security of a newfound community.

As long as they buy the book, or make others want to buy the book, they can say what they want. I got two Pulitzers. I got to live as a serious, muckraker journalist. I'm sure, in the next century or so, I could return to issues people take more seriously.

You know, if we still have publishing agencies by then.

I was wondering how you've been acclimating to your new diet?👀

Also, do you think you'll write any more books of a political nature in the future?

My new diet? Are you stalking me?

It's fine. Food has lost some of it's taste, which I'm told is normal. I tend to go to more extremes if I choose to indulge in it. I'm currently a fan of sour candies, mostly just to suck on while I work. I find myself more hungry than I was before, but living in a city, there's ample options.

Everything I write is political. Everything one engages with can be viewed through a political lens. The world is filled with ties to the politics of our geography, demographics, history, and knowledge. So safe to say, yes. I will.
