otter Modular floating cabins and circular metabolism. Archipiélago de Los Roques, Caribbean Sea, Venezuela. 2022
Project: Bastidas & Salinas ///. Architecture: Ana Valenzuela, Gabriel García, Carlos Arellano, and Igor Fuentes ///. Circular Metabolism: Daniel Otero Peña ///. Naval engineering: Eduardo González ///. Phase: Schematic design ///. Surface: 800 m² ///. Program: Modular floating hotel complex with guest rooms, common areas, and research center.
The project studies the development of design strategies in tropical marine ecosystems for the architectural design and resource management of a modular floating hotel complex prototype. Through a metabolic analysis at the scale of the floating structures and their territory, the systems for the drinking water (rainwater harvesting and desalination), waste water (grey and black water treatment), electrical energy (photovoltaic and solar thermal panels), and solid waste treatment (composting and recycling) were designed, among other flows, to achieve resource autonomy and thus minimize their environmental impact.

mexico city resource efficiency Advancing Urban Metabolism studies through GIS data. Mexico City, Mexico. 2019 - 2021
Institutions: UCLouvain + University of Reading ///. Research team: Daniel Otero Peña, Daniela Perrotti, and Eugene Mohareb ///. Publication: Journal of Industrial Ecology.
Based on the premise that integrating spatially explicit Urban Metabolism (UM) data in urban planning can leverage resource-efficient development and management of open space networks, this research project presents a methodological strategy to integrate geographic information systems (GIS) data analysis within a UM framework. To this end, a GIS-based UM assessment of Mexico City was performed at the city scale, including data on vulnerable communities, communal lands, and indigenous areas. After mapping selected GIS layers, a detailed resource-efficiency analysis was performed through the compilation of a Borough Pattern Scan, based on quantification of resource use, total areas of resource infrastructure, and public open spaces. The results of our multiscale spatially explicit analysis provide an improved understanding of borough metabolic profiles, which can leverage a more resource-efficient development of open space networks in Mexico City.

hemel hempstead Analyzing self-organization in urban water commons as social–ecological systems. Hemel Hempstead, England. 2018 - 2019
Institutions: UCLouvain + University of Reading ///. Research team: Daniela Perrotti, Katherine Hyde, and Daniel Otero Peña ///. Publication: Sustainability Science.
The research focuses on the concept and analysis of urban water commons as social-ecological systems. In light of the distinctive social and ecological values of water, both for ecosystem health and for human well-being and sociability, this study presents the idea that the existence of water systems can foster stakeholder engagement and enhance self-organization in urban commons. The hypothesis is tested in the recently restored Geoffrey Jellicoe's Water Gardens in Hemel Hempstead applying Ostrom's multilevel diagnostic tool (social-ecological system framework).
