“Wish I was jokin’.”
“Yeah, might just.” Even when it comes right down to what they know. Jaime figures he’ll skip any guessing and just ask Max if she knows the next time he sees her. “I’ll be countin’ on you, man. I’m long overdue.”
"It’s okay. If anyone gets it.”
“Probably shouldn’t, but I appreciate the thought.” Danny finishes his drink, leaning back in his seat. “I’ll try not to let you down.”
jaime-cohen:
He nods, and doesn’t ask any more than that. It’s not like he answered either.
“Yeah, me too. That’s just about my whole fuckin’ life.” He shakes his head. “If you ever figure out how to pull yourself together, tell me, would you?”
"Seriously?”
“Might have more in common than we thought. Yeah, I’ll let you know alright. If.”
jaime-cohen:
“You ain’t from here either, right?”
“Welcome to the fuckin’ club,” he jokes. “Ought’a be some way to turn that around.”
“Nah. A ways.”
“Oh yeah, you too? It’s like you’re sitting there watching yourself be a dumbass, but you don’t shut up. What the hell, right?”
jaime-cohen:
“Sometimes.” Most times it just reminds him how much he screwed up on that end… and every other.
“Yeah, man. They’re usually good to have on your side.” Gotta know that people who don’t back down have balls on them. “’Least you can see it, though. Knowin’ all that shit about yourself is a good thing.” At least is should be. Jaime knows why he does the bullshit that he does, and yet he still does it.
“I get you.”
“That’s for damn sure.” Danny laughs into his hand, not entirely disingenuous. “Not always fun being self-aware. Especially when you don’t know how to quit, but it’s alright.”
jaime-cohen:
“A pretty good ways, yeah.”
“It’d be hard to meet anyone more stubborn, that’s for sure.” Hard-headed, stubborn, determined, it’s all the same thing. “You too? Got a hard time lettin’ go of first impressions?”
"You miss it?”
“That’s fun, though. I like people that stand their ground on stuff when it doesn’t get outta hand.” But he doesn’t know if it’s people-specific. “Not exactly. Just a little stubborn.”
jaime-cohen:
“Nah, they’re back home.” Or at least they were the last he heard.
“Why’s that? You don’t seem too bad.”
"That far away?”
“Just screwing around. But she seems a little like the type. You know, not to change her mind sort.” At least that’s what he got from their short interaction on Thanksgiving. “But it’s cool. I’m kinda the same.”
jaime-cohen:
“Yeah, I got two little brothers.”
“Nah, man. It was my offer. Besides, who knows if Max will even go for it.” Jaime gives him a teasing grin. “Maybe she just hates you for you.”
“Really? That’s cool. They not living here, or?”
“Guess that’s true.” He spares a laugh, looking down into the bottle for a moment. “Maybe. Wouldn’t blame her.”
jaime-cohen:
He’s not sure he’d go that far, but then again, he doesn’t know her well enough. “Yeah, older siblings do shit like that.”
“I’ll keep good on putting in that word for you. Might make things easier.”
"That’s for damn sure. And they don’t stop. You have any siblings?”
“You’re good, man. I owe you one.”
jaime-cohen:
He laughs at that much. “Yeah, man. You got it. Plus, Sam’s…” He hesitates for a second, unsure. “Sam’s an adult, right? Makes her own decisions and spends her time with you, gotta be a good reason for that alone.”
Another pause. “Max’s probably just treatin’ her like a sister.”
“Yeah. She’s responsible and all, so it’s fine.”
“Sounds about right. I’m sure my brother would do the same shit.”
jaime-cohen:
“Can tell her you’re a decent kid. That a good word?”
“Haven’t givin’ me any shit, or any reason to think you’re up to no good. Or at least not up to anything too fucked up,” he jokes.
“Yeah.” He gives a nod, running a hand through his hair. “Good enough.”
“Thanks, man. Wiser than us all.” The last bit’s more of a tease, but he pairs it with a smile.
jaime-cohen:
“She ain’t so much of that, so I bet everythin’s fine.”
“You want me to put in a good word in for you?”
"That’s a relief.”
“Depends. What good word?”
jaime-cohen:
“Yeah, sounds like Max to me.” Protective has always been her niche.
“But you say you’re just friends, right? She ain’t worried that it’s gonna be like her and your brother?”
"Yeah. We’re just friends.”
He takes another drink. “Don’t think so. Would be pretty paranoid of her.”
jaime-cohen:
“Sure ain’t any of my business neither.” Maybe he’ll ask Max about Danny some other time.
“She don’t like that or somethin’?”
He chuckles at that, trying not to get things too detailed. “Right.”
“Not exactly. I mean, I dunno. Think she’s just protective and I’m not just some guy. I’m the guy she used to hang out with’s little brother.”
jaime-cohen:
“No shit? Must of not gone too well. She never said anythin’ about it.” It’s not like him and Max are all about secret sharing, but it seems like something she’d mention to him. Or maybe he’s looking too far into it.
“Guess it can make for awkward visits when there’s baggage like that.”
“Just sorta seemed like that sort of situation when I met her. And I’ve got a few other guesses, but.”
“Yeah. Especially ‘cause me and Sam hang out a lot.”
jaime-cohen:
“No shit? They think cause you got that face you’re gonna use it?”
“Sure is small in this town. Yeah, I see Sam a whole lot when I go over to Max’s place.” Maybe the girl’s got an easier handle on it than he thinks. Or maybe there’s a different reason. But when it comes right down to it, it likely won’t matter. “Surprised you don’t see more of Max, considerin’.”
“Something like that, I guess.”
“That’s cool. Might have something to do with the fact that I think her and my brother sorta had a thing. But... Who knows. Not my business.”
jaime-cohen:
“No fuckin’ kidding. Bet you get away with all kinds of bullshit.”
“Fuck. We go drinkin’ a lot. Talk a lot of shit.” The name and description ring familiar to him, so he laughs. “No shit? Yeah, I met her. Girl I’m talkin’ about is Max, they live together. Real tight, those two.” It hits him a second later that it’s because Sam’s a vampire - Max told him as much. New, too. Doesn’t look like she’s got it all together, and that makes him wonder how she’s able to go on walks with someone like Danny.
“Oh, not all that much. Get a lot of heat because of it, believe it or not.”
“Oh... Seriously? I’ve only met her once or twice. Hear a lot about her from Sam, though. She’s the one you went drinking with?” He laughs under his breath. “Small town. Shouldn’t be surprised.”
jaime-cohen:
“Dark and mysterious? Yeah, I could see it.” Everyone has something to hide, but he’s only in the business of finding out what suits him.
“Fun, huh?” Jaime catches the stammer and the repetition, and he’s debating on whether or not to mention it. “Last fun thing I did… shit, man. Spent a day with a friend a little while back. Good times.” Recently his head’s been too muddied up to think about much fun. “Who’s she?”
“It’s my baby face. Holds all the secrets.”
“What’d you guys get up to?” If they’re delving a little further in, he doesn’t mind posing a few questions of his own. “My friend Sam. Blonde, small. Like... Around this tall? Have you met her?”
