“A woman who wears my clothes is not afraid to be noticed.” -Bob Mackie Diana Ross showcases her fabulous Bob Mackie designed costumes during the Leading Lady Medley in the 1969 NBC/Motown television special G.I.T. on Broadway (aka: Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations on Broadway). Mackie started out as a sketch artist for Hollywood costume designer Jean Louis (notably creating the sketch of Marilyn Monroe’s JFK birthday gala gown for the designer in 1962); he then went on to assist his life partner Ray Aghayan designing Judy Garland’s costumes for her TV series in 1963-1964. After branching out on his own, Mackie became the go-to designer for Miss Ross, Cher, Ann-Margret, Carol Burnett, Mitzi Gaynor, Joan Rivers, Tina Turner, Liza Minnelli, Debbie Reynolds, Raquel Welch, Britney Spears and countless other iconic stars from the late-1960s to the present day, winning nine Emmys for his work on television and three Academy Award nominations for his work in film.
