Louis van Gaal needs to lift his Manchester United players
Rewind three weeks, Louis Van Gaal's Manchester United squad completed a rather dashing preseason with a 2-0 win over Valencia. Their sixth win out of six games, 5 against top European clubs, quite a turnaround from David Moyes' pre-season, where United struggled against rather mediocre opposition.
And so fast forward a couple weeks ahead to the start of the season, Manchester United versus the lowly Swansea in the Old Trafford. Many expected a repeat of last years' 4-1 victory against Swansea, maybe even a larger score, but a shock occurred.
United played dreadfully, looking like they had no will to chase the ball, barely stringing together passes. Swansea struck first blood, and though Manchester United equalised not too long after through a Wayne Rooney free kick, they never looked too threatening. Sigurdsson took the game into his hands by rifling in a shot in the 72nd minute, and from then on the score didn't change. Van Gaal changed his formations throughout the game, from a 3-4-2-1 to a 3-5-1-1 to whatever, but to be blunt, it didn't work.
Anything can happen the first game of the season, and so I decided to wait until after the Sunderland game. What I saw during the Sunderland game, was no better. Although Manchester United scored first through a goal that probably would have ended up as an own goal had Mata not been there, Sunderland levelled about ten minutes later, and arguably had the better chances throughout the match. United had Robin Van Persie back, but him and Rooney looked like ghosts throughout the match. There was not enough engagement from the shaky midfield to get the forwards involved. Why is Kagawa still on the bench?!
Van Gaal is a huge football personality, and is much better at managing a team than I ever will be, but what shocks me is United's continued lack of attractiveness to big players. Yes, they have signed Di Maria in the next few days, but it's not that Di Maria was dying to go there. He is wanting to leave Madrid and Manchester (either red side or even blue now) is the only place that can afford him. Other wise, Van Gaal's recruitment on defence has been poor.
He is obsessed with the three at the back formations, and yet has only two competent centre backs. Playing Michael Keane is a great investment for the future, but at this moment United need results, and Keane won't deliver. The purchases of Shaw and Rojo are a great start, but Van Gaal plans to utilise them as wing backs, rather than dedicated defenders.
Rojo especially, having played centre back in Sporting Lisbon and moving to full back in the World Cup, has the appearance of a versatile player, but whether Van Gaal chooses to use his versatility on defence or attack remains to be seen.
The mass exodus of defenders with Evra, Vidic and Ferdinand leaving has yet to remedied with adequate replacements. Until United do so, it will be hard for any offensive surges, if they appear to hold. Shaky defending and lack of cohesion throughout the pitch are what characterise Manchester United now. Van Gaal said he needed three months, well now the time's ticking.
Back To School
What can I say, it's been a long and tiring summer, and I'm actually excited to go back to school. Between the MCAT and working my summer job, the idea of hitting the books is thrilling. That is definitely not a statement I could image myself saying 5 years ago, but when you study what you love there's nothing better.
The MCAT left me sufficiently burnt out, and I'm still awaiting scores (Sept. 9 is the tentative day of doom). Working at Costco for a bit has let me relax mentally, but do the opposite physically, which is kind of good since I haven't done anything physical all summer.
Here's to a semester of Immunology, Virology, Biochemistry, Physiology, and writing case reports on rare cerebellar tumours.
Carlo Ancelotti faces goalkeeping conundrum at Real Madrid
Diego Lopez has served Real Madrid for the past two seasons, winning over fans and taking over the starting spot from club poster boy Iker Casillas.
Even the biggest of Madrid fans will agree with the statement that Lopez has served his team better than Casillas.
With the arrival of Keylor Navas, Carlo Ancelotti, who managed to give each of the two Spaniards opportunities last season, faces a dilemma. Keeping three first-team 'keepers would be a nightmare, and it would be nearly impossible to keep all of them happy.
You can't have one keeper for the league, one for Copa del Rey and one for Champions League. This is an impossible conundrum, one that can only be solved by disposing of one of the three.
Casillas played in the Copa Del Rey an Champions League last season, which adds up to approximately 20 games compared to Lopez's 36 in La Liga. With Navas expected to play as the number one goalkeeper, Lopez would have no chance in keeping up those sort of numbers.
In truth, Navas does represent an upgrade in goalkeeping for Real Madrid, but it seems unfair that Lopez could be the one forced out. Casillas may be sentimental to the club, but it is clear that he is no longer in top form.
Mistakes in high-profile games in the Champions League (especially in the final) and during the World Cup have offered a good picture as to what Casillas is like now.
For Lopez the options are good with a few rumours flying around. For some reason Chelsea supposedly are interested in him, but that would put him in the exact same situation.
Napoli and Monaco are also possibilities. For Lopez, choices are plenty.

Why Robert Lewandowski Can Take Bayern Munich All the Way
At this time last year, though it wasn't announced, many Borussia Dortmund fans knew that their star striker, Robert Lewandowski, would not return to the club at the end of the coming season. Knowing where he was departing to also led to more anger, since the scars left by Mario Götze's departure to Munich were still fresh. Even more unfortunate for Dortmund fans was the fact that they were getting nothing out of this-Robert Lewandowski was leaving for free.
Dortmund's system helped bring out the best in Lewy, and made him the prized forward that scored four goals against Real Madrid in the Champion's League a few years ago. There were obvious uncertainties about him being able to replicate his form in another club, but right now the doubters are probably biting their words.
Lewy has so far scored four goals in the last three games, and although the games have been friendlies, the quality of the goals and his link up play during attacks are those of a striker playing at the top of his game. What makes this more exciting, is the chemistry being developed between the forward and Ribery.
The French winger has assisted Lewandowski twice via crosses from the wing. It'll be exciting to see what happens when the rest of Bayern's World Cup contingent returns from vacation. Götze and Lewy will reignite the spark they had back in Dortmund. Robben's speed and trickery will benefit Lewandowski, who will be able to cause trouble in the box while Arjen Robben does his magic.
Although Mario Mandzukic was no slouch, Robert Lewandowski will offer many more dimensions in attack. Robert can function as a target man, as Mandzukic did, with better movement on the pitch, and with more willingness to play outside the box. Robert also possess much more skill with ball, as was seen by his lovely chip goal inside the box last week. His chemistry with Ribery will make this Bayern team even more formidable than the last.
Robert Lewandowski is incredible.

MCAT Rant
I hate it when I think I'm doing well on my AAMC practice test, and when I mark it I end up with a 7 in verbal. I thought I did terribly on physical sciences and finished with a satisfactory 11. I don't know why it's so hard for me gauge how well I'm actually doing. I doubt I'll be able to sleep for a month after my test...
No World Cup, nothing to do, except study for my MCAT...
Germany win the 2014 FIFA World Cup!
World Cup final predictions?
Germany wins 2-0 in my opinion
Argentia 0 Holland 0
Boring game to be honest. Both teams played defensive, Argentina more so. It almost seemed like neither team wanted to advance to play Germany. If Argentina plays like they did against Holland, the Germans will walk away with a win, Messi or not Messi.
Arkells - Never Thought That This Would Happen Great song by a great band from Hamilton, Ontario.
Studying for the MCAT is draining my soul away.
Germany 7 Brazil 1
Wow.. just wow... So I'm pretty sure the whole world watched this game, and going into it, anyone who bet on a score like that is probably a millionaire. I knew Germany would win, but not by THAT much. And not that quickly, it was 5-0 by half time. The Brazilian defence was torn to bits by the speedy German attack. David Luiz and Dante were completely lost, and couldn't deal with the rush of German attackers around them. Julio Cesar was shell-shocked by the end of that first half, and realistically there was little he could have done. On to the Germans, Mr. Miroslav Klose has broken the record for most World Cup goals with 16. This is a remarkable achievement for such a timeless player, but at the rate Thomas Muller is scoring, don't be surprised if that record is broken during the next World Cup in 2018... Andre Schurrle played his best game of the tournament, capitalizing on the poor Brazilian defence and scoring a brace, one of which was pretty damn sweet. Conclusion to this story: Brazil needed Thiago Silva. This is beyond Neymar, and his absence wouldn't have changed the result by much. Without their captain, the Brazilians are lost in the their own half. Dante has proven his inconsistency, and cannot be trusted to hold down a defence in a team that isn't dominating. Oscar scored a consolation, but that will mean little, since Brazil have experienced the worst loss in their history. Expect heads to roll after this tournament ends.
Last semi final game is up in 30 minutes.
At this point Germany reached 3 milestones:
1) Since 2000 we always reached semi-finales in world cups, but lost then. 2014 is the year where we finally reach the finale. 2) Klose makes his goal and therefore is the top goal scorer of all time. Case Klosed, I guess. 3) If it stays like this, Germany (with 7:0) reaches the finale with a score that never happened before in the semi-finales.
