FIU Becomes Bowl Eligible With Commanding Win.

Details: Florida International becomes bowl eligible for the second consecutive season with a 38-17 win over Western Kentucky. At 6-2, including an impressive 4-0 start to conference play, FIU is heading to a postseason bowl game for the second consecutive season under head coach Butch Davis. He credits the leadership from the players for the 6-2 season.

“It’s taken several weeks for the guys that we think can be leaders to emerge,” Davis said. [Quarterback] James Morgan has become a leader. [Defensive tackle] A.J. [Johnson] is a leader. [Middle linebacker] Sage [Lewis] is a leader. We’re getting some guys that now their voice matters. They’ve set a level of expectations.”

Take: I’m very proud of the way FIU has started off the season so far. Their only two losses have come to Power Five opponents in Indiana and Miami (FL). FIU currently sits atop Conference USA’s East division and has a very good shot at winning the conference for the first time in school history. FIU looks to continue the positive momentum as they face rival Florida Atlantic at home on Saturday night.

Marlins Sign Top International Talent.

Details: The Marlins reeled in a couple of big fish earlier in the week by announcing the signings of Victor Victor Mesa, 22, and his brother Victor Mesa Jr., 17. Victor Victor Mesa was regarded as the top international free agent when Major League Baseball declared him a free agent. Victor Victor Mesa cited the culture of the city of Miami played a significant role in their choosing to sign on with the Marlins.

"It's not a secret there's a lot of Latinos, a lot of Cubans here. So we feel like home here," Victor Victor Mesa, said via a translator. "But mostly the seriousness and plan this organization has is what attracts us the most.”

Take: After finishing the 2018 season at 63-98, the Marlins really have nowhere to go but up. This is a good signing for us as it shows that the new ownership is focused on acquiring top international talent. Victor Victor Mesa already becomes the Marlins’ top prospect heading into the 2019 season. Marlins will look to continue the rebuild this offseason.

Late game surge carries Heat past Trail Blazers.

Details: After the (3-2) Blazers took a three-point lead with 3:07 left in the game, the (3-2) Heat closed the game off thanks to a 17-5 run that propelled us to a 120-111 win on Saturday night at the AmericanAirlines Arena. Goran Dragic led the way for the Heat with 28 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter.

“Probably last year, we would have lost this game, but we feel like mentally we are more stable,” Dragic said. “We know (Coach) Spo was talking before the game that they’re going to make their runs. We just needed to stick with our game plan and we did.”

Take: This was an entertaining game to watch because the Heat played well for most of the game. The Blazers made a bit of a run, and even took the lead, but the Heat had the mental fortitude to bounce back. Heat look to continue its modest two game win streak Monday night vs the (3-3) Sacramento Kings.

Dolphins fall to 4-4 for the season with a Thursday Night loss to the Texans.

Details: The Miami Dolphins lose to the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football (TNF) by a score of 42-23. Deshaun Watson dazzled for the Texans. Watson accounted for five touchdowns as the Dolphins’ defense seemingly had no answers for the Texans’ offense. Dolphins’ coach Adam Gase was concerned about the defense in his post-game press conference.

“If you have 11 guys that are doing close to what you’re asking them to do, then you can start looking into physical limitations — who we have to protect, what we have to do better,” Gase said. “When you don’t execute anything right, it’s hard to evaluate that and that’s where we have to do a way better job of doing what we’re coached to do. ”

Take: I, too, am concerned about the Dolphins’ defense, as well as our offense. The (4-4) Dolphins will play the (3-5) New York Jets next week at home at 1 p.m. Dolphins beat the Jets 20-12 in Week 2 of the season.

Charlotte Hornets vs Miami Heat - Full Game Highlights | Oct 20, 2018 | ...

Despite Furious Comeback, Heat fall to Hornets.

Details: The Charlotte Hornets spoil the Miami Heat’s home opener with a 113-112 win. Kemba Walker was pivotal in the Hornets’ win as he scored 39 points, including the game-winning free throw off of a questionable foul call.

''I just saw a little bit of a lane,'' Walker said. ''I thought I did a good job at getting the contact.''

According to Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, he believes the game should have gone to overtime, “This is a game, for sure, you want it to keep going. It should have been decided in an overtime, if not more. ''

Take: The Heat came out flat at the beginning of the game, hence the need for a furious comeback at the second half of the game. Walker continued his hot play to start the season with the 39 point outburst that the Heat, really, had no answer for defensively the entire night. At 1-2 with three close games already under our belt, it seems like last season’s theme of close games will continue on over to this season. Next game is on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against the New York Knicks.
