Amber Heard  at the launch of Aleim magazine’s 4th issue in NYC, May 29
"I’m afraid so love, at least there aren’t any more family members we’re hiding." Nate chuckled and pecked her forehead.
Daphne smiled, but it faded quickly. She inhaled deeply, and apologized to Nate's mother, before making brief eye contact with Nate, "I'm sorry, will you just excuse me for a moment? I will be right back." She walked brusquely away and towards the staircase running upstairs to Nate's room. She leaned over the sink in the bathroom and hyperventilated slightly. Â

"Well no, he told his father, Laura and I, but then he of course had to buy the ring at David’s shop who of course couldn’t keep a story like that from his wife, and you’ll soon find out what a big mouth Ellen has." Karen chuckled as Nate walked into the kitchen. "And don’t worry. I don’t like being wrong, but I have to admit that this time I was. I’ve seen how happy you make him."
It wasn’t that Nate didn’t trust his mother or his fiance, but he didn’t want to leave the two alone for very long. “Of course I had to go to David’s shop. I wanted the best quality ring for Daph,” He grinned and put his arm around her waist. “Besides, I never would have heard the end of it if I’d gone anywhere but my brother in law’s shop.” Nate turned to Daphne, "One of these days, I’m going to have to sit down and draw out a picture of who exactly’s in this family you’re marrying into and who does what. I don’t think you’ll ever have to worry about connections they’re all so diverse.”
"We just got out of school and I have to study again," Daphne sighed animatedly, "Well, it's probably for the best- are you guys really that extensive?" She asked as she reached her arms around his shoulders.Â
"That would be lovely, Daphne." Karen replied, with an equally nervous smile. "May I see the ring? He was awfully secretive about it, even though he told us he was going to." She studied the ring when it was offered to her. "He did good." She said it as if to say that her son had picked both a good ring, and a good fiancé. "I've never had a daughter in law before, so you'll have to bear with me as I learn how to deal with one. Let me know if I step out of line."
"Oh no, he told you all! One day when we're closer, and Nate's not around to play unnecessary referee, I've got to know how you felt about that." She laughed to herself as she followed Karen into the kitchen. "He did didn't he?" She agreed, though she hadn't quite picked up on the subtext as she looked at the ring again. A softer, more genuine smile, spread across her face as Karen acknowledged her as a future daughter in law, "And I promise to be more bearable than I've ever been with anyone. I won't make you regret letting me back into Nate's life."Â
Grinning, he watched he go on ahead before following her. As they neared the house, and the children playing in the yard, he caught up to her and took her hand. "For the record, we can celebrate some more tonight once they all leave. Since we started dating, my silencing spells have become impeccable." He grinned and leaned over to kiss her before they were herded inside by his - and soon to be hers - nieces and nephews.
Laura noticed the ring first. She squealed, handed Nate to Chris and rushed over to the young couple. Following that everything happened at once, Nate was pushed aside as his sisters swamped Daphne wanting to know details of the proposal and see the ring. His mother came out from the kitchen and stood in the doorway. He could tell she felt excluded and wanted to join her daughters but was worried she'd push her soon to be daughter in law away and scare her. Nate moved to say something to her, but he was caught up by one of his brothers in law.
Daphne got one final glance at Nate before a wave of family crashed over her. Laura grilled her amiably and she described the proposal as best she could while her left hand was pulled in all sorts of directions. Daphne saw Karen standing warily on the sidelines. She took a deep breath before excusing herself from the crowd of ladies and children that carried on boisterously even after she removed herself. She approached Nate's mum, "So, how about that helping hand I promised earlier?" Daphne offered nervously, adding a well intention-ed smile.Â
Chuckling, Nate ran his fingers through her hair. "Though right now, we should probably focus on getting back to the house before my mother regrets accepting you into the family." He teased. "Everyone should be there by now anyway, can't be late to our own engagement party." He didn't want to leave her warmth, but he knew that they really needed to get a move on. Slipping out of her, he reached for his wand and cleaned the two of them up. He stood and quickly redressed before helping her fix herself up.
"I suppose you're right. Although for the record, as much as I love your family, I sort of prefer our method of celebration." Daphne giggled and skipped away towards the sound of people in the distance, before Nate could respond, checking over her shoulder every so often to make sure he was still behind her.Â

Nate groaned as she dug her nails into his lower back, before thrusting into her, once, twice and then coming undone deep within her walls. Rolling onto his back, he pulled her with him, so he stayed buried deep inside her as they caught their breath. “I don’t want you to go home now.” He chuckled, half in jest. “Just stay here with me.”
Daphne stretched her body out along his, and dragged her lips along his jawbone, "As long as you want and as long as you need. We have all the time in the world." She whispered into his ear, smirking as she laid her head against his rising and falling chest.

Grinning, Nate watched her talk animatedly. When she finished speaking, he took her left hand and slid the ring onto her finger. “I think that sounds pretty damn good to me. As many kids as possible. In fact…” He gently pushed her down into the flowers, marveling in her beauty as her hair spilled around her head like a halo. “We should get started on that right now.” He teased, moving to hover over her. “I believe we have just enough time to get busy and still make it back in time for dinner.” He winked, his lips lower to caress her neck as his hand went to her hair. Nate moved his other hand to slip under her skirt, pushing it up around her hips as his thumb caressed the skin covering her pelvic bone.
Daphne giggled softly as he touched her, then let out a breathy moan. She grabbed at the bottom of his tee and pulled it over his head, kissing him deeply as they rolled around in the grass. She could still hear the sounds of Nate's nieces and nephews playing in the distance and hoped they were far enough away from them not to make a scene. She shrugged off her jacket and let the straps of her dress fall around her shoulders. "I can't believe it's only been two weeks. Right about now, it feels more like it's been five years."Â
Chuckling, Nate reached into his pocket. “I’m afraid I can’t offer you a firing squad, but there is one more thing.” He smiled at her taking in the scenery. “Daph, I know this isn’t the most ideal situation, if anything the two of us should break up but we know how well that lasts for us.” Chuckling, his hand began to fumble with the contents of his pocket. He thought he’d be more nervous, but now that they were here, there were no fears. “I’m not sure how we’ll work things out, but I know together we can deal with anything.” He pulled out the small wooden box and knelt down on one knee. “Will you stay by my side for as long as I live? Will you join my crazy family tree and help me start a branch all of our own? Daphne Aurelia Greengrass, will you marry me?” With a small smile, he opened the handmade box to reveal a modest but unique ring. “It’s not much, but I paid for it myself. I can’t promise you we’ll be rich for the first few years, but I’ll work my hardest to buy you anything you desire. If you want a bigger ring, I’ll get you one eventually. The starting pay for Healers is higher than most beginner careers, but it’s still not a lot. We’d probably be able to get a small house with my savings and we can live comfortably. One day, this place will probably be mine… Ours… If you’ll have me? If you’ll have this place?”
"Man, I am so happy today's not the day I'm going to die!" Daphne yelled out. She sat on his knee and spoke again, jittery and excited, "And no more of that noise about buying me whatever I want or getting a bigger ring, please. First of all, this is beautiful, and I love it and you worked so much and for so long, thank you, you really shouldn't have. Secondly, We're going to have a thousand kids and be really poor, and we're going to like it. Well maybe not a thousand, but you get the idea." She paused and took his face in her hands, suddenly a little serious, "I don't want the life I had, and I don't want you to feel like you have find a way to give that to me. I want a life with you. Something that's our own. How does that sound to you?"Â
Returning her gentle smile, Nate took her hand and led her back through the gate and further down the path. As they walked, Nate listed to the sounds of the farm. He could hear the animals and the birds. He also could here his nieces and nephews as they played in the garden in front of the house. All those noises faded as they went deeper down the path. “We need to go off track now. It’s an easy walk though.” He led her off the path and into the trees. Soon, he stopped and covered her eyes. “OK, now do you trust me?” He asked as he began to walk, his body pressed against her back as he helped her further into the wood before coming to area where the trees thinned slightly that was covered in purple flowers. “OK. Open your eyes.” He whispered in her ear.
"Are you taking me out here to shoot me? Was this relationship all a ruse? I mean that seems messed up, even by my people's standards, but I thought I'd check, 'cause it feels a little fire-squad-y to me." Daphne called out to him as she reached her hands behind, searching for him. She was grateful it was such a beautiful day. The warm breeze and the gentle hum of all the forest life was comforting in spite of Nate's cryptic lead. When he finally prompted her to open her eyes, she fell silent. It was beautiful. She looked back at him in exaggerated surprise and then tilted her head, absorbing the scene thoughtfully. "It's lovely Nate. All in all this would be a great place to be taken down by a firing squad. Thank you." She smirked and giggled as a small butterfly landed on her shoulder.Â
Nate smiled and wrapped his arms around her. “Thanks, love.” He murmured and kissed her hair. “It means a lot to me. I’m sure where ever the triplets are, Aaron’s looking after them.” He missed their children every day. It was hard to explain to people who didn’t experience the project, but he knew most of his classmates had been affected by it, so much so that the ministry had cancelled any plans to run the program again. “T-There’s somewhere else, I wanted to take you, but if you’re too tired, we could just head back. It’s a little further away.”
She inhaled deeply, trying to lighten up and shake the thought of Aaron and the triplets out of her mind. She smiled gently, "I, uh, I think I have a little left in me. Come on, let's go." She said, rather distractedly as she headed toward the gates the led out of the cemetery. Â
Nate grinned and lead her away from the house. “You’re the first person - apart from Anthony - who’s ever met him, but you already know how special he is to me so…” He grinned as they walked down the stone path, away from the house and towards the place they would be going next. As the neared the top of the hill, the small graveyard could been seen below. The walk was silent, but silence had never bothered them before. He knew what she was thinking and feeling as did she him. He opened the gate to for her and followed her in. Nate took her hand again and lead her towards the newest grave, where a small stone cross stood. His brothers name and dates were engraved upon it. “Aaron, I’d like you to meet Daphne Greengrass. She’s pretty special to me, so I hope you’ll look after her, alright?” He stood slightly awkward, but turned to look at Daphne. “Daph, this is my brother Aaron.”
Daphne wasn't sure at first how to respond. She knew how important this was and she didn't want to screw it up, so she did the first thing that came to mind. She squeezed Nate's hand, then lowered herself onto the ground, sitting on top of her feet and spreading the skirt of her dress gently around her. She spoke in a gentle and very soft voice, "It's very nice to meet you. You know, if...well, I guess when is the more appropriate word, I pass away one day, I think I'd be most afraid that the people I loved would forget about me when I was gone...so I guess I want to tell you that you definitely don't have to worry about that, Nate's first and last thoughts each day are of you." She spoke to the headstone as if sharing something in confidence, "I've never had any brothers, but, and it seems so strange to say it now, I had a son--he didn't die, but he's gone away, and I miss him-" her voice caught in her throat, but she cleared it as best she could and went on, "much more than I thought I would. Goodness, you were young. Well, I only mean to say that I hope you're doing alright wherever you are, and that there are puppies and other kids to play with, and don't you worry ever about being forgotten. It's quite an impossibility." She stayed on the ground for a moment in silence, and tilted her head to the side. A few more seconds passed and she stood, dusting the dirt off of her knees and standing to face Nate, wringing her hands slightly. "Thank you for introducing us. He's not very talkative, but you know I've never had an issue filling the silence." She joked nervously.Â
Nate chuckled and went to put her things in the bathroom just outside his room. “I thought you might have said it was better suited to your grandfather.” He joked, feeling proud of his bedroom. “I’m going to say - judging by your reaction - however, that you approve.” He grinned and watched her peer around the corner at him. “Now, I want to introduce you to someone, let’s go, it’s a bit of a hike.” He offered her his hand and set out of the room.”
"Ah, but you forget my grandfather is my favorite person in the world. Aside from you of course. So really it could be equally suited to the both of you. Although seeing as you've never met him, it's not really your fault that that doesn't mean anything to you." She looked down for a moment at her hands while she spoke frowning slightly. "Yes, of course, let's go." She smiled once more, and grabbed his hand as they walked downstairs and out of the house. Â
