She chuckled, “No dear, I just train, but I do care that our more seasoned agents have good weapons.” Rose knew that in order for them to survive they needed to make sure their people were well taken care of. “My brother is the brains, I just follow orders.” Cullen was so much better at all of these things but she did her best to learn from him. “Though I may need help soon, a few of my company is about to get sent out to one of our outposts.”

“I’ve yet to meet the Commander but it is a pleasure to meet his sister first,” she said with at smile. While Rose might talk lower of her abilities Daphne knew well enough that those who trained others were tougher and more skilled than they appeared at first glance. It required an iron will and complete understanding of any possible moves needed to advance a person’s skills, not an easy feat considering what they had to work with. “Oh? What sort of things will they be dealing with?”

She helped him wriggle out of his breeches and settled back in his lap again, shivering at the skin contact due to the cold that surrounded them. Yet he remained warm enough to draw her in so she allowed herself to spread her fingers over his chest, exploring his body with some fascination only for her to shiver again at the brush of his fingers. A quiet gasp left her lips and her eyes fluttered shut, rocking her hips into the touch in a silent request for more.

“i could show you around, sure.” the thought of being a tour guide is an amusing one; the concept of showing someone where to go and what to see instead of what to avoid when in kirkwall will definitely be something new for her ————– and hopefully once she gets back it will be far more of the former than the latter. “hopefully there’s enough of a city to show you. otherwise, i suppose there’s always the docks —— or the wounded coast if it isn’t too dangerous.”

the more she hears about the game, the more pippa’s certain she’s not meant to be a very big player in it. a little lie here and there, doing a bit of flirting to get someone to be exceptionally chatty for an evening is one thing, but what she’s talking about stretches just a little too far for her. “so basically you can never be sure if anyone’s who they seem to be.” all things considered, one would think that would be an easy concept for her to accept, but it still rubs her the wrong way. 

maybe it’s the fact she wears her emotions so blatantly on her sleeves. “or trust anyone who wants to get close to you. that sounds more miserable than it does exciting…”

Daphne beams at her easy acceptance, relieved to have some thought of guidance in an unfamiliar place. She’s felt somewhat uneasy in Skyhold but had grown used to the bustling camp and set up due to the fact that everyone else remained fresh faced and just as uncertain. “People rebuild surprisingly fast, you’d be quite pleasantly surprised with how people simply want to go back to their old lives. It will be slow, of course, due to the issues ravaging the countryside but the efforts are likely already underway. Is there a reason it’s called the Wounded Coast?” 

She could only shrug and prop her arm up on the stone ledge, picking at an imaginary piece of lint on her coat. It wasn’t that she was proud of her home but Orlais had held a majority of her heart and the Game had simply been what she had accepted. Outsiders undoubtedly had issues with it due to the strangeness of it but she couldn’t look at Pippa as she spoke. “There are its faults, yes, but it shapes the very society. It gives people entertainment and opportunity not otherwise available.”

His smile is something soft that does something to her, making her nerves ease a bit with every touch. His hands are somewhat cold but quickly warm her skin when she presses against him. The roll of his hips presses him flush against her and she rocks down instinctually, shuddering when the fabric of her leather pants drag against her. It’s a fumble of hands as she helps wriggle out of them along with her boots and works on his belt with renewed vigor so she no longer remains the only one naked.

The rain outside continues to pour and the crackling of thunder hides the small gasps that leave her at the feel of teeth on her skin. It provides an almost tranquil cocoon where she thinks of nothing else but the space between them and how easy it is to give herself over to him without worry of ulterior motives. Likely he has one but even that thought is removed as she sheds her blouse, skin prickling with goosebumps at the sudden cold. She’s a bit shy at being so exposed and nearly goes to cover herself with her arms but she makes an effort to remove them and work on ridding him of his shirt as well so he is equally as bare as she.

for as eager as she was to come so far to join up with the inquisition ( not having anything keeping her in kirkwall had quite a bit to do with it ), she still misses home. hopefully what they’re trying to do here isn’t in vain. hopefully, there will be a time she can cross that sea a second time and see the docks she used to play on as a child again. so the smile pippa offers up when she feels the weight of a hand on her shoulder is genuinely appreciative of the gesture. condolences for what happened aren’t always the case, verbal or otherwise. “i hope so. you can’t always control circumstances, can you?” but they could control how they reacted to it. “you should try to visit sometime. once it’s back.” she’s already gotten the impression that lowtown might not be the best fit —— but what she knew of hightown was more or less a bit ————- biased.

    “sounds like i’d be biting a hole through my tongue the entire time.” certainly, she could lie with a smile on her face; she’d done it practically on a nightly basis when the patrons made it a necessary part of her tableside manner. but it’s one thing to tell a little white lie to someone three tankards in than it is someone looking for a pound of flesh and a chance to take you down. 

    “is there anything in orlais that isn’t a game?”

“If we could, there would be far less trouble in the world. Though it might cause more problems in the long run,” she agreed. Daphne hadn’t thought to travel somewhere so far and as famous as Kirkwall, all things considering, but she’d wanted to see the world outside of her own small circle and it was a worthy option. Especially if the woman was offering to show her around. “Perhaps I’ll call upon you to be my guide. It’s always better to have someone who knows the sights than wandering around with a full purse waiting to be snatched.” She’d already made that mistake once on accident.”

She chuckled at her words, nodding along. “You most certainly would. Orlais isn’t the best place for everyone, especially given the political maneuvering for those who don’t have the stomach for it. More often than not they end up as pieces of the Game and are sacrificed for the wrong step.” It seemed both of them were uncomfortable with their hometowns yet could not help their pride. “Not many. Everything from love and lust and anything in between can be used.”

“You and me as well.” She wished there didn’t need so be so much hiding but apparently they were not going to be so lucky. “Well perhaps I can assist. I’ve been alligated a certain amount of the Inquistions funds to get our agents better suited for the battles ahead. Speak to the smithy and them let me know what he suggests.” Rosalie was very serious about getting the agents prepped if she was to help her brother and keep the troops a live she’d have to be serious. “Well if you get sent to Orlais perhaps those finer things will come in handy.”

She leans in a bit more at her words, intrigued at the thought of the coffers being available for weaponry. While her own coinpurse was duly full, she couldn’t deny that the thought of outfitting a squadron of soldiers was a fun task, if somewhat dull. “Are you in charge of arming the soldiers? I have experience in a squadron, I’m well aware of the equipment needed if you require some aid. Only if you wish it, of course, I know you’re likely well versed in what you need.”

At her words, Matias’ laugh is warm and deep, and it makes him teeter on his heels. ❛ Not a particularly difficult task, I assure you, ❜ he smiles, matching her teasing tone. It doesn’t take long for her to return with the drinks — and a loaf of good sense. ❛ Smart and considerate, too! Any good qualities you don’t happen to have? ❜ he jokes, taking his cup from her with a grateful bow of his head. He sips at the newly provided drink, enjoying the flavour. ❛ I don’t suppose I’d be fortunate enough to get your name? ❜

She smiles broadly at his compliments and gives him a brief wink as she sets down the mugs of ale. “I’m rubbish at cooking and I tend to stab first, ask questions later,” she replies as she settles in. “My name is Daphne. Care to share yours?” She offers no last name, preferring it in truth. She’s no idea where he’s been and sometimes names carry weight in Orlais which she would rather not explain.

She moans at the touch of his hands, rocking back automatically as the need for friction rises. It’s as easy as breathing to jump back into the motions and she’s relieved for it as she eagerly slips her hand into the collar of his shirt. The warmth he provides is enough to chase the remaining chill from her limbs and she pops off a clasp of his shirt to expose more skin to get even closer, never breaking the kiss.

Her only answer is a soft moan that leaves her all too quickly at his touch, fingers skirting along her skirt as his lips quickly follow. It’s exhilarating and she can’t remember the last time she’d lain with a man- enough to remember how it feels but her head is spinning too fast to recall. She straddles his lap easily at his guiding, hands settling on his shoulders to steady herself as she presses into him. In truth she can barely recall his name and can’t help but flush at how easily she’s been pulled into this. But she knows she wants this, wants him, even if it is all a bit of a rush. The concern in his voice is touching and she presses a hand to the side of his face to pull his gaze to hers once more and nods, smiling. “I will.” She leans in to steal another kiss that quickly leads into something more passionate.

suddenly, pippa has varric’s voice in her head : “no story you hear is ever going to be completely true.” kirkwall, as she’d come to learn since arriving on this side of the waking sea, seemed to be on the brink of a punchline rather than a place. “it has its good parts and it’s bad ones, just like any city in the free marches. has it’s fair share of good people too.” she pauses to smile fondly as she hops down from the box and back onto the battlements. “i was there, yes.” she doesn’t need to get any more specific than that; pippa knows exactly what she’s trying to ask without actually saying it. “it knocked us down, but it won’t knock us out. the city’ll come back.” and hopefully, when all of this is done, she might be able to come back too. the idea of having to sit through etiquette lessons —– oof. pippa feels her nose crinkle at the thought of it. 

   “so then you’ve played before? the game? i can’t ever tell if people who play it do it for fun or if they’re just masochists.”

There’s a look in her eyes that seems to take the woman far away, somewhere likely containing haunted memories that linger in her small frame. So much came from the stories that they seem to build and build until they piled on top of one another and drowned out all the rest. Untangling the right from the wrong and the lies from truth would be like tugging a thread loose with knots on every inch and she cannot imagine the weight of it all. Moved, Daphne steps forward to lay a hesitant hand on her arm in a silent action of comfort and reassurance. It may be unwelcome and she keeps it light so she is able to brush it off if she so chose to do so but it is the best she can do for a stranger. “I don’t doubt it,” she affirms. “Places rebuild, people forget, everything will come back stronger than it was before.” If Corypheus did not tear Thedas down in his quest then they might all become a bit better for it. 

“Both, my lady. They do not care for the outspoken individuals but those that can weave and lie and smile all the while. I played only a little and quickly tired of it but it provides those without station to rise above to titles. Or to drag another down.”

Olyver laughs and he shrugs nonchalantly, as though that itself is his answer. “Perhaps you are,” he smiles with a raised eyebrow. “But not tonight. Tonight you are only guilty of one thing.” His eyes slip closed as their lips meet – as she deepens the kiss, as if to give him permission, and suddenly his arms are firm, wrapping around her waist to pull her into his lap. He trails hot kisses along her jawline, teeth faintly nipping as he moves. Just enough for her to feel, not enough to leave any marks.

“If I didn’t know any better I would say you are trying to seduce me,” she whispers against his lips. Then his arms are around her and she’s in his lap, pressed impossibly close, feeling the full heat of his body encouraging her further to settle in and drink it in. Lips trail from mouth to jaw, pressing and nipping until she feels warm all over as the blush spreads up her neck. It’s moved from entirely chaste to something much more passionate and she cannot help but tip her head back to bare her throat to him, fingers curling in the hair that brushes at the nape of his neck.

Olyver just smiles and shrugs in response to her explanation, it is not in his nature to make snap judgements about people – he hardly would’ve gotten very far with that kind of attitude, and he is skilled enough to reveal only what he wants the other to know. And his intentions now, well, it’s warm, cozy… intimate. “Oh, you know, the usual suspects… murder, treachery, debauchery, and not of the fun kind.” His fingers graze back up past her breast, having had no resistance, and once her palm is against his chest, he decides – why not? – and leans in, his lips lightly brushing over hers.

“I imagine you’re quite fond of debauchery,” she says lightly, teasing and yet not. “Perhaps I am guilty of all of those and many more.” For all her teasing she knows the air has changed, become heavy and something far more than simple words. When he leans in she allows it and even presses forward slightly to return the gentle kiss. It’s hardly more than a chaste brush of lips at first, soothing and innocent, but her fingers curl into his shirt and she eases it into a proper kiss. A bit too soft but one of chaste passion that whispers of promising more for her is far too warm and charming for his own good.

“no, it’s alright. there isn’t enough laughter these days.” they’re fleeting moments, few and far between. but that’s the way it’s been for so long now, the space between them has become normal. she straightens up a little bit more when asked where she’s from, a genuine smile on her face. “kirkwall in the free marches. but i’m sure that’s not too hard to guess.” she’s well - aware she wears her city on her sleeve as well as on the tip of her tongue. “oh, the gossip i could handle. that i have plenty of experience in back home.” only hers never came wrapped up in a bow of a title or a pretty mask. hers usually came flowing out in the last few sips of a drink or tucked in between the folded arms of someone thinking they’re going to spend the night sleeping on a tavern table.

       “etiquette lessons —— are those required for us if we’re taking up posts in orlais?” maybe she hasn’t thought this all the way through.

Her answering silence is enough to share her feelings on the matter for the heavy air of sadness and despair runs rampant in the camp. Too many remain cowering in fear as they heal from Haven and she cannot blame them for it- that sort of destruction is enough to remind anyone that the Blight is very all too real. She forces her mind to turn to pleasanter things and offers her a genuine smile at her admission of Kirkwall. “I must admit I have not visited the city itself but I’ve heard plenty of it. Is everything true of that place as well? Were you there?” Daphne folds her arms over the other as she considers then nods, grimacing a bit. “Not required, per say, but you’d be better off having them. Outsiders are...openly mocked and treated as entertainment and casualties in the grand Game. I would hate to see you fall casualty to it.”

lyver laughs easily at her next guess – though, not a bad one. “You were right with Orlais, I was just teasing, didn’t want you to act like you know it all, though apparently you do. Perhaps I am not so great at keeping secrets.” He’s playful here, he knows he’s very good at what he does, though it would not hurt if she didn’t know that. He lays a gentle kiss down on her forehead as she tucks herself into his side. “Like I said, a noble pursuit,” he answers. “What is the point in living, if you are not living it to the fullest? Life is short, after all, you may as well do as you like. Within reason, I suppose.” He chuckles. “I mean, obviously not criminal activity. Unless you thought you could get away with it.” He runs his hand up and down her side, coming up to the side of her breast and lingering for a second, just testing before he moves it back down.

“I am trained to recognize the signs, good sir. I know enough to put the pieces together myself.” For what is she, if not able to play to Orlesian standards. She knows nothing of him but there are always moments of conversation that reveals activities and...intentions. Of his towards her own person she is certain and her assumption is proven correct when his fingers graze her breast and leave her breathless. “What kinds of criminal activity? How do you not know I have not partaken already?” He knows not of anything beneath her smiling face and she knows not of his so it is an easy game. Her smile only grows into a soft smirk, pressing her hand flat to his chest.

it really must be a sight ———- her perched up on a box and peeking over a low point in the battlement. but lucky for her, it seems her helpmate isn’t the sort to poke fun. ( and she can’t fault the laughing, really ———– the whole scene’s got her laughing too now that she can see properly. ) “i’m not used to fortresses, can you tell?” 

where else she’d like to visit is a loaded question ——— enough of one she fully takes her attention away from the snow - capped mountains to focus on it fully. “this is actually the furthest i’ve ever been from home. everything’s new.” but at least that wasn’t so uncommon here. at least in that sense she wasn’t alone. “i’ve thought about accepting some missions in orlais just so i can see if the stories are true ——— and see how poorly i’d fit in there.”

    “i’m guessing really really poorly.”

Daphne tries her best to settle down and muffles her laughter into her palm until her shoulders cease their shaking. “Just a little. Though I apologize...it’s a rather silly sight but one I needed. We all could do with some fresh air and a bit of laughter to start our days for what’s coming ahead.” She leaned into the stone to rest her elbows, gazing out over the jagged peaks and rising mountaintops that disappeared into the clouds. “So far? Where are you from?” Her accent wasn’t too difficult to place but it gave her a headache just imagining so she aimed for subtly instead. “They’re all true, I’ll grant you that. They are just as mocking as they are exquisite but given the proper mask and titles, you could roam among them without any worries. They are a gossiping lot, I admit, so you might want to hold onto that wish until you are ready to face the masses with proper etiquette.”

He muses for a second over her question – it would never be his choice to be in Court, never for fun, always for work. He hadn’t even really told his family that was where he was headed – the less they knew, the better, for all of them. Loose lips sink ships, after all. “Mostly on duty,” he answers, shrugging. “Though who says it was Orlais?” His tone is teasing, gentle – he had done quite well in Orlais, though had missed Ferelden, for all it’s faults, it was home. He squeezes her hand gently, just enjoying the closeness between them. The storm may be raging on outside, but here, it is safe and warm. “Sounds like a lot to live up to, but a noble pursuit, indeed,” he answers, offering her a smile. “A purposeful life, and an honourable one.”

She fiddles with a loose thread on his shirt with her free hand while he speaks, her eyes flickering over his face as he speaks. There’s a fleeting look in his eyes that she is unable to read and perhaps she is better for it than looking into his soul so openly. “By the Maker, you can’t expect me to believe it was anything else? Perhaps Nevarra, what with their performances, but one cannot risk appearing in Orlesian court without loving and hating it. It leaves its mark. Am I far off?” His squeeze is reassuring and she tucks herself back into his side once more, curling the thread around her finger. “I strive to live honorably, in what ways that I can. It is a tall order but I want nothing more than to live my life the fullest I can and would hope my partner understands. It is, after all, what I signed up to do.”
