my wife, best friend, mother-in-law, and mother-in-law's friends (all from California) have visited and/or migrated here, and have said universally the food is generally better over here - better made, better quality, just fresher and tastier in general. they even agree we're onto something with beans on toast. (and i'm not being a hater here on American food either, i've tried a ton of southern food whilst visiting. biscuits and gravy? i'll INHALE a plate of those, i REALLY enjoy it). but funnily enough when i bring that experience up to folk who haven't visited, everyone gets quiet 👀

Aye, food quality is a different beast. Although very keen to try some southern food, particular proper collard greens. We don't really have an equivalent here, and every video I see of people showing off their cookout food makes me want to dive in.

working class british food is good and anyone who cant appreciate the conditions it was born from really does need to check their privileges i think.

i love hearing about the origins of food and knowing that something, that i may not even personally enjoy, was able to bring people through hard times and i think, i love hearing about people finding clever ways to stretch what little they have so it can feed more, or learning about how scarce foods were preserved long enough to last far longer than they would otherwise, or finding ways to use "undesirable" ingredients because its still perfectly fine. this stuff is absolutely worth respect and even celebration!

i love the smack barm pea wet meme and the wigan kebab. i think its a bit funny to put a whole pie on a bun. at the same time though, if i was cold, tired and hungry and had some spare change? well its warm and filling, and doesnt taste bad at all. It's a humble little meal that could keep me going for a while, thats all it needs to be.

Aye, you're playing a dangerous game by pointing out 'British food bad' is classism. I've seen these debates before. They never end because people seem to think jellied eels are something we eat every day (and are for some reason really squeamish about haggis, as if it's not literally just a really, really round sausage technically).

It's a hill I will die on. Beans on toast in particular was born out of rationing during the war, and continued afterwards. Food rationing didn't stop until 1954, almost a decade after the war ended.

The UK only paid off its debt to the US and Canada during World War 2 in 2006. In some ways, the US treated its previous enemies better than its allies after the war, they forgave a significant chunk of German debt to allow the country to rebuild.
