“You’re the best.” She teased, allowing Darcy to lead her to wherever her car was parked. “Drama, suspense and space are three things that I do enjoy in shows, so I wouldn’t be opposed to spending the day watching it with you.” Valerie retorted with a grin. Seeing Darcy pull out her phone made her glad she’d left hers back in her room. She hadn’t replied to the texts she’d received from her mother and she knew that the woman would now be blowing up her phone— she wasn’t really in the mood to speak to anyone but the girl she was with right now.
Darcy used the little car remote to unlock the doors and slid into the drivers seat. She turned the radio and began humming to the song playing while she backed out of the spot. “We should go to a concert or something the next time one comes within relative distance of campus.” She said, glancing over. “I miss concerts. And going to see movies. Normal, fun stuff.”
Darcy hadn’t had much ‘normal fun’ since 2011. Between chasing Thor around making sure Jane always took breaks from Science! for food and sleep, she hadn’t had much time to just be a girl in her early twenties. Now she was a fucking SHIELD agent, which didn’t give much room for fun, either. Clearly, her life was sorely lacking in the Good Times front.

“It flies? –Shit. If you do manage to get your hands on it, take me for a spin. Please.” She retorted with a grin as she finished up with Piccolo. She wandered out the door before waiting for Darcy to follow suit. “If you’re ordering pie, you’ve got to share it with me. Isn’t that what they do in all the romantic comedies– share pie or whatever?” She spoke, squeezing Darcy’s hand gently. She quirked an eyebrow before shaking her head. “Battlestar Galactica? I can’t say I’ve seen it, no. So I suppose that shall be on our agenda for today.”
“Of course I’ll share. Sharing is caring, after all.” Darcy grinned and steered them in the direction of the parking garage. “The show has drama, suspense, and space. What more could you ask for?” She pulled her phone out of her pocket. A couple of texts from Coulson and one from Skye. She honestly just didn’t feel like facing them yet. “It is a good show to get sucked into, which is what I think we need right now.”

Coulson sighed. Of course she wasn’t going to just accept that. He picked up a pen and tapped one end of it against a stack of papers as he did a mental coinflip on what to do. He hated keeping secrets like this. Then she asked all the stuff about hiring her–it was true that she was a good agent, and she was observant, which was also another trait that lead to his decision to bring her to the Academy. “You don’t have to look after me,” was what Coulson opened with, straightening up and clasping his hands together on the desk. “I hired you because I did notice you possess a great number of qualities we look for in agents here at S.H.I.E.L.D. You’re doing more than you think, Miss Lewis.” God dammit. He needed to tell her. “Especially now, you’re…. definitely an important part of the team.” He dropped it there, for now, waiting to see her response.
“Actually, Sir, I do need to look after you. You are a super-secret-zombie-spy who is way too caught up in the job. Sometimes you forget the little things. Luckily, I don’t. I leave post-it notes around your office, set reminders in your phone. Did you think it was God that made your schedule look so good?” She walked back over the her chair and sat down again. “I enjoy my job. I love my friends. I love you, Coulson. Hell, you’re family. I’m not good at playing the emotionless special agent; I’m not that girl. And I don’t like being lied to.“ She smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes.” I don’t really think I am all that important. Not to this team, anyways. I think I am comfortable. To you, to Skye, to Trip, to Fitz. Maybe not to Ward because I did tase him. But I don’t think am explicitly important. I’m on the outside and let me tell ya, it is getting cold out here.”

“I can’t even remember the last time I drove a car. —’Twas probably before the Academy. Mom got me to drive her around everywhere.” She chuckled. “Ooh, the pressure.” She teased, wracking a hand through her hair. “I think I’m craving burgers more than fried chicken– so let’s go with greasy burgers.” She decided, laughing at the sight of Piccolo already tangled up in his leash. She leaned down into a crouching position so she could help untangle their puppy.
“I am trying to get my hands on Coulson’s car. Lola. She flies.” She smirked as she waited for Val to finish untangling the kid. When she finished, gestured in the direction of the doors.“Maybe I will get some pie. In movies, people are always ordering pie.” She pushed opened the door and walked out. When Valerie was beside her, she laced their fingers together and smiled to herself. “What’s on the agenda for the rest of the day? We could have a Battlestar Galactica marathon. Have you ever seen it? Television at its finest.”

She took Darcy’s hand, and allowed the girl to help her up. Admittedly her knees were still a little shaky so it took her a moment to gain her composure. “Good idea.” She smiled, reaching out to smooth down the fur on the dog in Darcy’s arms. She nodded, following the brunette. “Off campus is fine by me.”
“My car is going to be so happy to see me. I haven’t driven in like, three weeks.” She grinned and open the door. “So, burger-greasy or fried-chicken-greasy? I’m open to both, so you have to make the final decision.” She dug in her bag to find Piccolo’s leash and snapped it on him before letting him out of her arms. He got tangled up in the leash almost immediately. Of course. “Piccolo, if you want to walk around like a big dog you have to quit getting yourself tangled up.”

Oh, good grief. Of course it was about the secrets. Coulson frowned a little, not taking his gaze off Darcy. “I’m afraid I don’t understand your concern, Agent Darcy,” he responded, his voice mostly neutral with that ‘friendly’ hint to it. “Don’t call me Boss Man, it’s Coulson. If you’re here to talk about Fields, I’m afraid we’ve disclosed all that we can about the situation. Everything is under control.” That was a little bit of a lie.
Darcy laughed. She hoped it sounded at least kind of menacing. “Save that shit for someone who buys it. I’m not stupid, Coulson. Fuck. I thought that you had a little bit more respect for me than that.” She shook her head and stood up. “I’m observant, you know. It’s in my file. If you don’t trust me, whatever. It's cool. But then why did you recruit me? If you don’t trust me, why do I spend seventy-five percent of my time looking after you? I am genuinely asking. Because from where I am sitting, it doesn’t make sense.” She paused and paced the room. She looked over at him, not really sure what her face was portraying, and gave a sad sort-of smile. “Help me understand.”

Valerie nodded. Come to think of it she hasn’t eaten anything since before the rave and she knew soon enough there’d be a growling stomach to prove that. “I’m also starving and something really greasy and bad for me sounds right up my alley.” She answered, matching Darcy’s grin. “You’ll pay? And they say that chivalry is dead.” She teased.
Darcy stood up and extended a hand to Val to help her up. “Let’s take Piccolo so we can sneak him fries.” She bent and grabbed him before walking over to where she dropped her bag and keys. “We are going to have to go somewhere off campus because I am pretty sure everything is closed today. Given the, uh, circumstances.”

Coulson was going insane.
Darcy wasn’t answering anything. She was never at his office, never at her office when he stopped by, he’d sent probably ten different agents to tell her that he wanted to see her, he’d called her–on top of everything that was happening, the last thing he needed was for her to start avoiding him to this extent.
He’d given up, now. He just wanted to make sure everything was okay with her, but apparently she was answering his question by not answering.
Coulson was sitting in his office, reading over the diagnostics Simmons had written up about the cause, time, etc. of death of Agent Fields, when there she was. He quickly shut the file he was reading and pushed it aside, adjusting his reading glasses.
“It’s nice to see you too, Agent Darcy, finally. I feel like I should be the one asking what gives. Any reason you’ve decided to ignore me until now?”
“I was trying to decide whether or not I was angry at you.” She replied, crossing her legs in the chair. “Still haven’t decided. But I figured that depending on how this goes, you will make the decision for me.” She raised an eyebrow and threw a pointed glance at the file he had pushed aside. “How long are you planning on keeping me in the dark? Because I am getting a little fed up, Boss Man.”

Valerie shook her head. “You’re not being paranoid. It does seem extremely weird.” She agreed. She listened intently as Darcy ranted, offering nods and ‘mhms’ where necessary. She definitely understood where the girl was coming from, and she didn’t mind at all that she was ranting. In fact, she was glad that she’d chosen her to spout off to. She shook her head again with another squeeze of Darcy’s hand. “Don’t apologize. You can rant to me whenever you want.” She assured her. “I understand how frustrated you are, babe. I would be too if I were in your position.”
“I’ll deal with it another day.” She rolled her shoulders before changing the subject, not wanting to spend the next three hours spiraling down a Coulson-sized rabbit hole. “Are you hungry? Because I am starving and I am specifically in the mood for something really greasy and really bad for me.” She grinned, hoping to lighten the mood a little. “I’ll even pay.”
Darcy was tired of being kept in the dark by Coulson and Co. She didn’t understand why she was even recruited in the first. She wasn’t that great of a professor. She was a great agent but was rarely asked to go out on missions. She basically lived in Coulson’s office most of the time and yet she had no clue what kind of trouble he was getting into. From the looks of it, she was pretty replacable.
She understood the whole ‘compartmentalization’ thing and she was only a level five clearance...but wasn’t Simmons also level five? So why did it seem like she was the only one of all her friends to not be in on all the secret-keeping? Even Ward was in their club, for Christ’s sake. Was she the only one that thought he had beady little rat eyes?
Darcy had been studiously ignoring all of Coulson’s texts and calls until she was finally ready to confront him. That day had come. She walked to his office, not bothering to knock before she opened the door.
“What gives, Coulson?” She asked, walking in and plopping down in one of the chairs.

Valerie had never been a nervous person— yet as soon as Darcy was around she felt like a school girl with a crush. “He does? —Got it. We won’t flaunt it.” She retorted with a smile, shifting so she could rest her head on the brunette’s shoulder. “Oh definitely. Hottest couple by far.” She laughed, it trailing off after watching Darcy’s demeanour change. She chewed on her bottom lip, nodding at the girl’s words before letting out a sigh. “I just can’t believe he’s dead in general. —I don’t understand.” She spoke pinching the bridge of her nose. This whole situation still freaked her out. It was just so— random. Out of the blue. Was this a one off, or were more things like this going to start happening around the campus.
Darcy leaned up and turned to face Valerie. “Right? Okay so, how does the situation make any sense? Am I being paranoid or does this whole thing seem like, extremely weird.” She shook her head. “Coulson is definitely lying to me about something and has been for months. I am so over it, honestly. I know I am not part of his special team, I know that. But why fucking recruit me and bring me down here only to lie to me? It definitely isn’t because he thought I would be a good professor.” She scoffed. Darcy knew she was ranting but this had been bubbling up inside her for months and she needed to vent to someone. Val was the obvious choice. “Sorry I just went off on a tangent. I need to take a Valium or something and chill the fuck out.”
