The road from Quebec to California was a long and tiring one, but lucky for Mason, he slept most of the way. His journey began when he was 5 years old, when his mother made the bold decision to move for not only a change in scenery, but for a change in lifestyle. Mason was much too young to remember the details of his parents’ divorce, but he knew enough to know that his mother was not happy taking care of two children and run a house. Mason had a solid excuse though, he actually was a child, his father on the other hand was a full-grown adult that acted like a child. A divorce and a flight later, Mason and his, now happier, mother landed in California.
It was a calculated decision from his mother, California was the home to her parents, and they welcomed their daughter and grandson with open arms. Living with his grandparents meant that Mason grew up in a very relaxed atmosphere, there was no shouting, no fights, just plenty of good food and good memories and with the beach as a backyard, life was a lazy Sunday stroll which defined his personality. Of course, life was not without its twists. As a child of the fae, all were eager to see how his abilities would manifest and it was with a deep sigh the three elder dryads had to come to terms with the new siren among them. His father's genes shone through, and one that his mother prayed would be the only one.
Though Mason never had the urge to contact his father it the realization that here was another part of his life that his father had ruined angered the child. The beach and the ocean were treasured places but now as these restrictions were put in place forcing Mason to seek them out away from humans and somewhat in secrecy as to not revel what he truly was, he grew to resent the man even more. Never been happier when his mother re-married, Mason was glad to say he had nothing but good things in his home life but good things were not happening in his school life. It was through sheer luck he graduated high school and though he preferred not to, college was the inevitable next step but it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out he was not made for higher education. So, before he got kicked out of college, he dropped out after a year. There was more to life than rigid structures, be it school, a restrictive mindset, or even the gender binary, Mason simply set life on cruise control and went where the wind took them.
Reality checks, however, were dished out on the regular forcing Mason to take up multiple jobs over the years to support this chill lifestyle of his ranging from being a personal assistant to a dogwalker and even a street performer, Mason did it all. but tips could only afford him a hot meal and that too only sometimes. Big believer fate and things happening on their own time, Mason's lucky break came in the form of a talent agent while he was out busking. Not one to pass up an opportunity, Mason went for the audition and before they knew it Fever Dream was born. It took a lot of work to get the ball rolling, but this type of work Mason found he didn't mind, it was fun at least. Slowly but surely, they went from getting random gigs at local bars, to playing at small indie festivals and soon released a full-fledged studio album. Fame came naturally and Mason whom was still focusing on the fun times failed to see the cracks that were forming. Chalking the split up to creative differences, three years together fell apart in less than 3 weeks.
That feeling of loss hit harder than expected. Mason never had a plan B, no backups or a safety net to catch when they fell, so it was to the odd jobs they returned, and like a true vagabond, Mason never could settle down in a place for long, the constant need for change took them all over the country, a few months here, a few there, home was wherever he wanted it to be. But with funds running out, Mason moved back to his parents', who also moved to settle in New York. It felt a bit like defeat, but he missed them a great deal. Lofty dreams were never their thing, but he would've liked to have come back successful not as some washed up rockstar, still, there were things he was glad for and there was always hope for things to fall back into place.
