Thank you, Steven Universe creators. You’ve literally done in a ten minute episode what the better part of a year of therapy hasn’t been able to accomplish.

I’ve got really, really intense self-directed rage and insecurity episodes that can come close to anxiety attack levels of nonfunctionality at their most intense. I showed my therapist this clip last Tuesday, with a limited explanation of who these people were and what fusion was. We’ve been discussing similar techniques with limited success, because the whole ‘ground yourself in physical sensation and your own body’ thing isn’t very effective when your body is sending you constant pain signals that you’d prefer to ignore.

She stared at the screen for a few moments after the song ended, squinted, and then said “This is amazing. I need to show this to my colleagues. What did you say this show was called?” Yesterday I had a really stressful afternoon of the ‘my boss said something slightly critical of me and I extrapolated that to mean I was horrible at my job and would likely be fired for being a failboat’ variety and it was leading to a metaphorical butterfly attack. I focused on Garnet’s techniques as described in the song and…they worked. Really well. I wasn’t automatically better, but it was easier to handle and I could function without wanting to curl into a ball and die. If you haven’t watched this episode, or even aren’t watching Steven Universe at all, I’d still highly suggest watching this clip. It doesn’t offer spoilers for anything past the first season, though the episode containing this song does, and it’s a genuinely powerful introduction to handling stress, guilt, and problematic thoughts.
