I want to start doing a song of the week! Each week I will be showcasing music I love, as well as giving some background and facts on it, starting with song to the siren. Probably one of the most beautiful vocal performances ever recorded and a goth classic! This is in my top 10 songs ever made.
This song is a cover of Tim Buckley, which Elizabeth Fraser created following the tragic drowning of his son and her partner Jeff Buckley. David Lynch struggled to get the rights to this cover for his movie "Lost Highway" as Elizabeth Fraser deemed it too personal to feature in the movie. After some convincing she watched a cut of the film featuring the song and was convinced enough to finally give permission for it's use.
The song Teardrop on the album Mezzanine by massive attack can almost be seen as a companion piece to song to the siren. It's lyrics were also written by Elizabeth Fraser in relation to the death of her lover Jeff Buckley. It's also another one of my favourite songs and part of a classic trip hop album I recommend to everyone!
