Lesson the Fourteenth :: A King's Right
It hardly took any concentration anymore.
Stefan sat at the table in the familiar old training room and stared at the pieces of the watch hovering before him. Over the months, he'd disassembled and reassembled such an antique by hand until the Bastard was sure he knew how to do it.
Then he had to do it without using his hands.
And then in under thirty seconds.
The last few gears and screws clicked into place, sometimes multiple at once. And the backing slid back onto the frame just as Stefan looked up with a victorious smirk.
"Done."
Despite himself, the Bastard's eyebrows rose appreciatively. "Well, well. Success at last."
"At last," Stefan repeated. "That was only my fifth try."
"Yes, I am sure when you are king, you will get five tries."
Stefan glared evenly, and the Bastard laughed. Stefan stood, picking the watch out of midair and crossing over to his trainer. The Italian watched him with curiosity. Eventually, after a long, thoughtful moment, Stefan held the watch out and nodded.
"Thank you."
The Bastard's eyebrows rose. "What was that?"
"I said thank you," Stefan repeated, no hint of derision or scoffing in his tone. "For all you've done for me. No one..." He glanced away. "You've done what I thought was impossible for my entire life."
The Bastard laughed a bit, taking the watch at last. "You had a small hand in that, ragazzo."
"True." It was Stefan's turn to chuckle, a sound that still startled his trainer when he heard it. "But I don't think your work is done."
"Isn't it?" The Bastard held up the watch as proof. "You can control it. And with minimal headaches, si? And just yesterday you flew."
"That was an accident," Stefan reminded. "And only for a few seconds. And I fell on my ass."
The Bastard snorted. Ah, yes, his pupil had changed much over the course of training. Now able to point out his own flaws, if not laugh at them. But that would come. With more maturity. With time. He would be a great king.
"Where will you go now?" Stefan asked, curiously, as he sat on the edge of the table. Much as the Bastard had that very first fateful day.
The Bastard shrugged with a sigh. "I return to Italia. Probably to teaching. If not, there's plenty of wine and food and beautiful women to go around, eh?"
With another laugh, he started to pack up his things into his bag. Stefan watched him closely, a sort of half smile on his face.
"You teach?"
"Si."
"What do you teach?"
"Philosophy, logic, little angry Romanian boys..." the Bastard trailed off with a grin.
Instead of growling or snapping or even smiling, Stefan just kept staring him down. "How would you like to continue the last one instead?"
The Bastard chuckled, still sliding books and papers into his bag. "What do you mean by that?"
"I want you with me."
"What?" the Bastard looked up, sharply. "You what?"
"You're the wisest man I've ever met and I owe you much," Stefan explained, as if it were the simplest thing in the world. "I want you as my main adviser. Both now and when I take the throne."
The Bastard stared openly.
Stefan arched an eyebrow. "Well? Do you want to go back to drinking under the hateful eyes of your family? Or do you want to be the right hand of the King of Romania?"
After a moment's more thought, the Italian's face cracked into a wide grin. "I would do it only to keep an eye on you, ragazzo."
Stefan smiled, then, in genuine happiness, for the first time in a very, very long time. The Bastard shrugged and finished packing up his bag, hefting it onto his shoulder as he spoke.
"Besides. You will need all the help you can get, ragazzo. Your future bride is not known for her kindness.”
“Hm” was Stefan’s only response.
“Hmm?” the Bastard repeated, nearly grinning now. “And this is why you like her, sì? Ah, you will make a frightening pair, that is certain. I look forward to it."
At that moment, Cezar crossed the room, not paying either man any attention, as per usual. With a single greeting in Romanian from the Dark Prince, however, the old soldier turned to face them. With Cezar, the offer was much more blunt.
"I want you as my military adviser, Cezar."
And the soldier only thought for a moment before nodding sharply. "As you wish, my prince."
There was an awkward moment of silence. Of course, the Bastard broke it, as the three men walked for the door to the training room.
"Well! I think we'll make a beautiful team. Stefan, get the door, will you?"
And then the two trainers were off down the hall and Stefan slowed to a stop. He looked back into the familiar room. So much pain and wrath and words had spilled forth in this room. So much progress had been made. And now he was leaving it all behind. He'd entered it an angry prince. A silly boy. Ragazzo, the Bastard had called him for every single day. But he was leaving it a king. A man in control. Stefan. That's what the Bastard called him now. That's what he was now.
So it was with a soft smile that he left the room, his power reaching out gently to draw the shades, switch off the light, and close the doors behind him.
King Stefan Alexandru Dracul Cătălin.
Cezar; It was my responsibility to protect your family, my queen. If I'd been faster, he would-- {is smacked} Ow.
Tatiana; You cannot blame yourself for this, Cezar. Sometimes bad things just happen.
S; I do not. Love her.
B; Yes, keep repeating yourself. That will make your claim more believable.
In which Cezar really, really just doesn't give a shit.
B; You had a father! Do you understand what I would have given for that? To have a father that looked at me rather than through me? To be loved like that? Even for a short time? You had him for twelve years, Stefan. Twelve years of love. I had a lifetime of empty smiles.
B; Ragazzo...this is everyone's worst nightmare.
Oneshot :: The Hair
Stefan's hair had always been...difficult.
Thick and dark and slightly waved, it might have seemed perfect. Especially if one had the chance to touch it. Silky soft and grippable. But that was after a lot of attention. And a lot of product.
Naturally, Stefan's hair is a mess. And as a child he didn't care. He swam, he romped about outside, he stuffed his face with cakes. Not once did he give a shit about the wild thatch of hair atop his head. His nursemaid and governess cared. They'd often try to comb it down when he sat still long enough.
However, all grown up at the age of seventeen, he felt the need to convey the princely image. Thick hair was slicked carefully, always neat. The only ones to see it mussed and childish like it used to be were the countless women he went through. And many found it cute. Endearing, even. But this was always in the backs of their minds. Because in their encounters with the Dark Prince, that thick hair was little more than a handhold while they gasped and screamed his name.
He grew up fast.

I posted the lines from this scene a long time ago, but I finally downloaded the scene and clipped it to the crucial bit.
Ah, Versailles.
“You’re not very detail oriented, are you.” Caroline murmured, one slender eyebrow raising as she stared back towards the Romanian boy. Truth be told, Caroline still hated the way that Stefan carried himself more than anything else in the world. He was cocky, narcissistic, and rude. Probably a spawn of Satan himself. But every time that Caroline turned away, disgusting by the boy’s demeanor, she remembered a different Dark Prince. The one that had broken down before her, tears slipping past his heavily guarded walls. She had that fact over him, but never dared to use it against him. Heartless as Stefan was, Caroline wouldn’t go so far. “‘Because I want to’ isn’t a very good reason.”
Caroline allowed for a faint laugh to pass through her lips as she stared back towards Stefan. She had been careful as to not allow for Stefan to know a thing about her personal life. Besides Nathan, Stefan didn’t have a clue about Caroline’s life. He didn’t know that her mother had left when Caroline had only been seven, and he didn’t know about the bulimia. Her low self esteem. But Caroline was a good actress. She could put on a mask, and pretend that she had never even heard of the disease. “I’m not sure if I should take the fact as a compliment, or run.” Caroline raised an eyebrow once more, crossing her arms gently over her top, which complimented the floral skirt that went down to the end of her thigh.
"It's the only reason," Stefan retorted with another laugh, spreading his arms wide as if challenging her to contradict that fact. "Every human being is inherently greedy and selfish. Evil at the core, you might say. The difference is that I acknowledge it. I do what I want because I can. No one can force me to behave, so why should I?"
His gaze flicked over her yet again, unashamed to be caught staring. He wasn't ashamed of a lot of things. If there was one thing true about him it was his confidence. "It is a fact. If you take it as a compliment, that's your business." He smirked again, taking a step closer. "And if you ran, I wouldn't...how you say...hold it against you."
Well then, perhaps you’re just sick in the head.
You say this like it's news. Still. There are teams of psychiatrists who agree with you. So congratulations.
Ah, Versailles.
Caroline merely smirked towards him, and shook her head gently. Learning from past experiences with the Dark Prince of Romania, Caroline was completely unwilling to show anything like weakness towards Stefan. And if allowing for Stefan to slip into conversation that he was better than her, that he would always be better than her, could possibly occur, she would put a stop to it. No matter what means are necessary. “Any particular reason why? Or is it just another one of your dangerous secrets.” Caroline raised an eyebrow, watching him in silence. The time that they had spent apart had not only changed Caroline, but completely diminished any fear that she had once had regarding Stefan. Now she was stronger, both mentally and physically. And Stefan wouldn’t be able to stop it, in the least.
Caroline scoffed at his words, shaking her head gently, allowing for her wild blue eyes to meet his dark ones. “You think I’m lovely?” In all honesty, Caroline knew that Stefan was stronger than her. He was stronger than everyone at the palace. But she had learned not to speak of it. His ego was large enough. And even if she did deny it, Caroline would just end up with a broken arm once more.
Why was he cruel? It was a question Stefan was familiar with. People often screamed that at him. Along with why was he trashing an entire strip of perfectly good shops and why did he steal that nice man's girlfriend and why did he throw his French tutor down a flight of stairs. All had the same answer, which he delivered with a feline smirk. "Because I want to."
If there was anything he hated more than anything else, it was misplaced bravery. There were a few in Versailles who'd earned it. Even less who Stefan legitimately respected. In fact, he could count them on one hand and Caroline didn't make the cut. She could warm things up and burst a table. That didn't even begin to impress Stefan. But she was lovely, and he had zero qualms in admitting that. He never did feel the sort of apprehension others seemed to regarding that sort of thing. "Of course I do. Anyone who doesn't must be blind or mentally deficient."
Was that supposed to be a joke? Because it was a pretty poor attempt if it was.
-smirks, a tad patronizingly-
I don't joke.
Home sweet home!
Don't looks so miserable. We're due for another grisly death any day now.
