headcanon 001: her sexuality. karma ashcroft is bisexual. the show got cancelled before she got to finally realize that and assume her feelings for amy, however, carter said that was the direction they were going – therefore, it is canon. and even if it was not canon, i would write karma as bisexual. her relationship with her sexuality is incredibly complex though, mostly because it is so closely tied to her friendship with amy and amy herself – and having feelings for amy is something that always terrified her ( i will go on about this later, but amy is very important for karma’s questioning journey ). however, regardless of how she finds it out and how she processes it, she is bisexual.
you can see it in little details until big things that happened on the show, honestly. such as: she has always been extremely affectionate towards amy and, from season two on, you can see her show strong signs of jealousy towards her best friend. we also have karma having an unbelievably big amount of knowledge about bisexuality and she seems very educated on the matter – which makes me think that she reached out to read about it. that’s honestly no surprise, considering the dream she had in the season two mid-finale ( a dream that involved reamy, amy / liam and then finally karmy in a kinda sexual position ). this all ends up leading to the pool kiss and the season two finale – some of my favorite scenes on the show because of how much they say about karma herself.
now, a lot of people take the season two finale the wrong way and destroy the goodbye scene, saying that karma was being selfish ( but then again, what’s new? ) however, it is so important. in the goodbye scene, amy asked karma to tell her their kiss meant something. before saying anything though, we see karma take a moment to think and she almost looks physically in pain, then she says i can’t. not that it didn’t. unlike in the season one finale, we do not have karma rejecting amy – we have karma saying that she cannot admit that their kiss meant something. because it did. deep down, she knows it did. she knows there is a reason why her drunken self would kiss amy. she knows it because she has been confused about amy for quite some time. however, she cannot admit it for a bunch of different reasons.
one of the main reasons why karma could not admit the kiss meant something was because amy was actually going to abandon her for the entire summer and not say goodbye. after years of promising they would always be together, amy was just going to take off and that hurt karma a lot. but the fact that karma was confused also weighted in. karma knew just how much she had hurt amy. they spent the entirety of season two talking about that and dealing with the consequences of her rejection – so how could she even dare to admit the kiss might have meant something when she was not even sure herself?
fast forward to season three and just how out of balance karma is, regardless of how hard she tries not to be. we come back in season three to a karma that is still incredibly hurt that amy just broke her promise of never leaving. however, karma is also dating a boy when season three comes back – a boy that she has to change to be with. i think it is quite clear that her summer relationship was a desperate attempt for her to get over whatever it was she was feeling with amy. and, in some levels, it worked. but karma and amy are attracted to each other like magnets so of course it does not last long and the boy turns out to be a pig ( which is a pattern in karma’s relationships – shocker ).
now, karma’s acknowledging of her sexuality kinda slows down in season three, i will admit that. however, there are still some subtle details of jealousy. and yes, karma ends up the season with felix, after pushing amy into sabrina’s arms. but the season itself is a season of realization. karma finally admits to herself, and amy, that she likes having amy be in love with her. i personally think this is the solution she finds for whatever it was she was feeling – she thinks her urge to kiss her best friend was a desperate attempt to have attention. but, at the same time, we have her completely hate sabrina and sabotage what they had – until we see sabrina being a complete mess in the series finale. and her state pretty much mirrors how karma was feeling when amy left her. so, of course, she ends feeling bad and fixes it. because she can relate to what sabrina is feeling – and she doesn’t think she deserves amy anymore.
it is all very much complex and karma has a pattern of going to a boy whenever things go wrong with amy ( or don’t go as planned ). she desperately tried to get back together with liam after rejecting amy. she started being friends with benefits with liam after her dream. she started dating a random guy when amy abandoned her. and then she went for felix when sabrina and amy happened. i am not saying that her feelings for these boys weren’t real, especially liam. she really did love liam. but part of me feels like she forces herself to develop feelings for the later two. almost as if somehow that is going to fix whatever is wrong and stop making her feel the way she does. but it is not going to. because karma likes girls too. and, in canon, she is in love with amy. and that would be explored in season four ( if we had one ). basically, karma is a mess about how she feels. but she is a bisexual mess.
