On Demonology
I wrote this for my friends awhile ago and thought it may be of interest to some people. This is just a brief explanation on the subject of demonology, a topic of interest that I have been studying for quite some time now. It is in no way meant to convince or discourage anyone from studying demonology for themselves, and I encourage skepticism and constructive criticism where appropriate. I am simply publishing this article to shine some light upon what otherwise may be a rather confusing subject matter. This is just the tip of the iceberg, as there are a lot of other similar topics to consider – fallen angels, watchers, Jinn, there are so many different cultural interpretations of “demons” that you can look into. For this, I mainly focus on the Ars Goetia.
I study demons, I believe in actively trying to invoke and evoke them. The typical reaction to such a concept is fear or loathing, but this is because the common interpretation of demonology is one which lacks any insight into the realm of etymology – people fear the very word “demons” as though all of them are the same, as though they have no history, as though they are just utterly representative of evil incarnate. The general conception of demonology is therefore one which lacks insight into spirituality, the occult, and even linguistics.
Let’s begin with the issue of the very word demon. It is derived from the Greek word, Daimon, which simply means a spirit or divine power, much like the Latin words Genius (similar to a guardian angel) and Nurmen (divine will). Further, the Greek word Eudaimonia literally translates to “happiness” and “welfare” and “human flourishing,” and another Greek word, Agathodaemon, translates to “noble spirit.” Daemons in much of classical mythology are simply godlike or divine spirits; this is all to say that most demons are neutral or even positive in their essence.
So where does the idea that demons are innately evil beings come from? From linguistics and an understanding of antiquity, there are indeed spirits associated with what we could typically think of as modern day demons: A Cacodemon is for example is one such negative type of demon and it is once again a Greek concept. With the rise of Abrahamic faiths such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, many older entities deemed as Pagan idols were cast into a negative light. The Cannanite Baal (or Ba'al) was once a title meaning “Lord” and was associated with solar worship, but the more zealous Abrahamic faiths took over and erased culture from history, this title alone began to mean something more sinister, as the church demonized all Pagan deities.
A brief matter to consider before progressing: There is quite an interesting history to be found in the treatment of Pagan imagery and symbolism as it pertains to Christianity, as some of the themes, motifs, visuals, etc. they use even to this day actually originated with and/or have strong associations with Paganism and likewise, it is advised for those who would like to know more about such matters to look into early schools of Gnosticism, which shares some connections to Christianity but in a far more mystical sense (some people have made the argument that Gnosticism is the “true” Christianity" or at least that arrived prior to the more widely understood forms of Christianity).
Now, another matter pertaining to demonology: Are demons connected to Satan? People who are active in the occult tend to have different answers, but the short answer is no. For me personally, I will preface this matter by saying that the closest thing I have to an external “God” is Lucifer, and although many confuse him for Satan, this is due to major discrepancies and fallacies in translating ancient texts. His real nature is that of the “light bringer,” and he is associated with the planet Venus, with goddesses such as Sophia (in fact, Lucifer could just as well be a female or transcend sex/gender entirely – in Hermetic philosophy, one of the seven principles of wisdom is that everything has a gender to it. This is different from the cultural/socially constructed gender, however). Some schools of thought will consider Lucifer and Satan to be one side of the same being, with Lucifer representing the spiritual side and Satan representing the earthly side, in a similar manner to concepts such as the Trinity. Lucifer and Satan both share similarities and certainly have a number of connections, but whether you view them as the same or not depends on individual belief.
My point in bringing Lucifer up is to say that, in simplest terms, Lucifer is not a demon. He is traditionally considered a fallen angel, once the most glorious and favorite son of God prior to Christ (in fact, there are a number of connections you can look into comparing Lucifer and Christ, much like you can compare any number of figures to one another throughout the whole of religious history – just examine syncretism). Further, some accounts of Lucifer based in Gnostic tradition, which I follow more closely, put Lucifer as separate from being created by God. From here, it is important to understand that whether it be Lucifer or Satan, these figures are frequently associated with commanding demons but if you recall the former points I made about what exactly constitutes a demon, you’ll realize this does not mean that Lucifer and/or Satan are in charge of some sort of chaotic and bloodthirsty horde. Much like numerous archangels play a role in leading other angels/spirits, and much like there are fierce and powerful angels, there is a wide variety to be found in the legions of beings associated with demonology.
Another means of addressing the idea that demons are all just repugnant and frightening creatures is by studying grimoires and various occult works throughout history. If you are interested in learning about demons, the Ars Goetia, one of five books contained within the 17th century Lesser Key of Solomon, is perhaps the most major source of knowledge on the subject. The Lesser Key of Solomon, known either as Clavicula Salomonis Regis or Lemegeton contains 144 spells, and is separated into the Ars Goetia, Ars Theurgia-Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, and Ars Notoria. The Goetia is heavily inspired by the 1577 Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, which was written by Johann Weyer. Weyer’s work was incredibly thorough and well researched, providing a hierarchy of various demons (e.g. their ranking, their roles, etc) but it was technically written as a means of suggesting that witchcraft does not exist and instead is within the mind, possibly even suggestive of mental illness. At the time of writing this, this was actually a very progressive concept because of course, the typical response to things like witches and spirits was to call blasphemy and devil posession. Other works such as those of earlier occultists like Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa were also considered.
The Lesser Key of Solomon is decidely an “extension” of sorts of The Greater Key of Solomon, dating back to the 14th or 15th century and serving as one of the most crucial texts of Renaissance magic. Whereas the Lesser Key could be considered black magick (at least from a rudimentary perspective), The Greater Key deals more with angels and astrological work. Both texts are representative of King Solomon’s work in constructing his temple in Jerusalem in about 587AD; it is believed that Solomon utilized the spirits to aid in construction (the temple itself has also been argued to be a metaphorical construct, and various connections can be made to psychology or the highly spiritual concepts of Boaz and Jachin, which are important pillars – literally – in numerous faiths). From the Lesser Key, from drawings made by artists like Collin de Plancy and Eliphas Levi, and from the work of writers such as Weyer, you can get a better feel for the incredibly diverse range of demons. In the Goetia, there are 72 major demons (72 being quite an important number). The demons range from tall dark and handsome to horrific. The point is, the Goetia and the whole of demonology is a diverse melting pot that deserves to be studied. In fact, one of the literal translations of Goetia is “jugglery,” which to me indicates that there is a lot of information for those who are interested to play with; there is something to learn from each glance at its text.
With regards to physical appearance of demons, numerous magicians tend to agree on certain characteristics of the major spirits. Each demon has their own unique aesthetic, and it is the work of Jacques Collin de Plancy in particular which shows us their most well-known and popular depictions. Technically speaking, demons are capable of altering their form. In many cases, if the magician performing an evocation commands them to appear or speak in a more human-like form, they will. Some accounts such as those of James Donahue have linked Goetic demons to extraterrestrial sources, even. In more modern forms of magick such as chaos magic, there are ways to manifest/evoke spirits in dramatically differenet ways as well, but all of this depends on preference, ability, and the will of the spirit itself as well.
In any case, it is also important to dispell the notion that all demons are ugly and terrifying creatures. To prove this, researh descriptions of demons such as Stolas (he teaches astronomy and the knowledge of poisonous plants, herbs and precious stones) who is frequently seen as an owl. Caim is another great example, as he appears as a rather silly looking black bird (he is a good disputer, gives men the understanding of the voices of birds, dogs, and other creatures, and of the noise of the waters too, and gives true answers concerning things to come. Truthfully, “terror” is something subjective, as are things such as disgust and repulsion. If someone did not know anything of Christ and saw his corpse nailed to a cross, without the context, they may think it is a demonic symbol itself! And likewise, how a spirit of any kind appears and acts can largely vary in accordance to your mind, to your emotional state, and any number of factors. Sometimes when people have unpleasant experiences with spirits, whether they be demons or angels or anything else, it is possible that their mental state was negatively impacting the relationship; this creates ugliness in the physical and mental world, and is a testament to the fact that if you are trying to do spirit work, you must try and remain calm, collected, and confident in yourself and of course, respectful of the spirit.
Notice how, in any case, that the abilities and physical appereances are not alll that “demonic” in the sense that people are typically used to understanding. And what’s more, the way people commonly view demons is through very distinctly Westernized sources – there are demons in Eastern religions but what I mean specifically is that, the typical portraits of major demons such as Bael, Astaroth, etc. could have possibly looked much less “malignant” had they been constructed in different cultural landscapes; Bael is often depicted as having three heads but they are always shown as rather disgusting. Meanwhile, in Hinduism for instance, certain entities may have multiple heads and yet they have historically been portrayed as looking non-intimidating and far more colorful and psychedelic than Western versions. So it could all be a matter of perspective, and that especially holds true when you consider the Christian church is far more content with letting demons be, well, demonized (to the point of fear mongering and inciting “the flames of damnation” more than any other religion. And to the point of Eastern versus Western aesthetics, it could be very possible that people were having experiences with deities of the opposite faith/geographic location and because they did not understand, therein lies the panic and demonization.
Also, as far as the looks and temperment of demons go, the generalized idea in popular culture is to compare them to angels, but herein lies a bizarre matter: Angelic beings in the traditional sense are not all winged and haloed humanoid beings. Some of their descriptions, straight from the Bible for instance, have portrayed them as rather terrifying creatures. Much like the stories of people who withered away upon seeing the true face of Zeus, Ra, Vishnu, and other ancient deities, angels are complex beings with dramatic features that in some ways, overshadow the “flare” of many demons. Samael for instance has a “height… so great, it would have taken five hundred years to cover a distance equal to it.” The traditional understandings of angels and God as being associated with beauty and lightness is made all the more bizarre to know if you research the Gnostic perspective of the demiurge and Yaldabaoth (essentially the idea that the “God” who created the universe created us inside of a prison system, or that the demiurge represents the illusory and entrapping nature of the physical world, which is cut off from divinity).
What you need to understand with angelic beings and with God, is that just like demons, there can still be a danger in working with these forces because as humans, we posses limited understanding of realms beyond our immediate comprehension: Perform a spell the wrong way, do something heinous, misunderstandings, they could yield negative effects. Likewise, one of the most universally accepted rituals for accessing your guardian angel is an arduous process that takes a whopping 18 months (Aleister Crowley advocates that those who wish to partake in demonology first purify themselves and connect to their holy guardian angels before then diving into the Bornless Ritual, which serves as a gateway to the Ars Goetia).
In any case, I should clarify that I enjoy communing with spirits of all types - demonic, angelic, natural, etc - but my personal preference lies in demons because they are often easier to get in touch with, at least due to my own personal spiritual path. Demons can be thought of as subconscious manifestations of inner wants, desires, knowledge, or even the divinity of the higher self – they don’t have to be external entities that slither into your ears and whisper darkness into your mind. It’s also interesting to forge relationships with demons because it represents the idea of literally confronting your demons – confronting your fears and your psyche. In Buddhism, in the transitional phase of life and death, there may be demons awaiting. If you run and cower, you may be reincarnated in a less than favorable position. Similarly, in Nordic Paganism, the warrior mentality is encouraged in order to enter Valhalla. Even Christ himself faced much torment and madness upon being crucified. It’s an integral part of understanding who we are, our roles, our true wills, but we must learn to overcome fear.
You may be the judge of your own experiences, but I wrote this to help clear up some of the bad air circulating around this topic, and to help instill the idea that we should work in tandem with various cosmic forces, not just limit ourselves to “good” ones, because morality is a blurred line when dealing with matters that extend far beyond human existence and materialism. If you are interested in trying a quick exercise in demonology, my advice is to research demons and find one you like, then look up their demonic enn. A demonic enn is essentially an invitation, request, call, admiration, protection chant for a demon (their origins and their language is largely unknown but major sources include Alexander Willit in the 16th century). For me, if I am looking to get in touch with Lucifer, I will say “RENICH TASA UBERACA BIASA ICAR LUCIFER” which roughly is a protection and cleansing spell on the air around me, and is a means to further invoke Lucifer. You may try saying an enn a few times and see how it makes you feel, if you notice anything; meditate and say it aloud or in your mind (you may call forth a demon but more than anything, enns are meant to establish a rapport rather than necessarily being full scaled invocation or evocations).
Do not fear spirits, they are all around us, chances are they may be around you: Perhaps literally, perhaps figuratively. Awhile ago, I discovered that the word “alcohol” derives from the Arabic “Al-khul,” which translates into “body eating spirit” and is the origin of the term “ghoul.” Notice how when hard liquor is around, it is referred to as “spirits.” The point here is that by consuming alcohol, as a creation of industrialization and commercialization in mankind’s capitalistic state, you are willingly invoking spirits into yourself; the more you drink, the more they overtake your personality and behavior. This is why natural mind altering substances such as cannabis, LSA, San Pedro mescaline, and mushrooms are among the most healing and restorative mind-altering substances (because it can be argued they all possess direct linkage with nature, and more benevolent spirits); compared to alcohol which makes us experience zombie states of consciousness.
My point there is not to stay no to alcohol or non-naturally occurring substances, but to be aware of how they affect you and to make sure that you maintain a strong mind through studying, developing your spirituality and philosophy, honing your critical thinking abilities; make it so that if any dark forces try to contact you, you hang up the phone immediately; retain a strong will, a sense of knowledge and balance, and even if you’re attempting to summon the likes of Lucifuge Rofocale, you will then have the mental fortitude to handle the situation properly.
Magick is no joke. Beyond the nonsensical and cliche imagery of arrogant teenagers who go and draw blood and make circles and light sigils in the woods to dark forces, “just for fun,” there is also the fact that magick can be used to help us better understand our wills, our desires, our hearts, our chakras, our minds, the nature of the universe, who we are, etc. And again, magick is not purely supernatural, it has developed connections to modern science in numerous ways (for instance, the occult has played a role in the development of NASA, quantum physics connects deeply into the realm of metaphysics, it is reflected in psychology and neurology, and so forth). Crowley stated “magick is the Science of understanding oneself and one’s conditions. It is the Art of applying that understanding in action.” Everything is connected; as above, so below, the microcosm and the macrocosm, notice the similarities between all systems of philosophical, science, and spiritual thought and conjoin them to truly harness the will and beyond.
Addendum: I believe in the right for all those who are interested in the occult, in magick, in witchery, in Paganism, esoteric mysticism, etc. to be free to pursue whichever avenues of magick they deem appropriate for themselves, whether that means chaos magick, Enochian magick, or anything else out there. This also includes the right for practitioners to perform black magick as they see fit. In accordance to left-hand-path principles, black magick is a valid option to consider so long as you know what you are doing and can use it carefully.
How To Find Your Spirit Guides, And Guardian Angels
Your spirit guides, and guardian angels are very powerful entities that have been watching over you, and are ever present in your life even, if you do not have a relationship with them yet. These beings are specifically connected to you, because you chose each other before you were even born into this incarnation. Everyone has a spirit guide, and a guardian angel. Finding them, and learning how to interact, and communicate with them can greatly improve every single facet of your life through the simple act of their presence. Some people may find it hard to find their spirit guides, and guardian angels, others will find it very easy, it all depends on if you are ready to know them, or not. There are many ways to go about finding your spirit guides, and guardian angels, if you are ready to go searching for them. Any of these methods am about to share with you can help you find them, but it is also important to use your insight, and introspection to verify your experiences.
This article might help too: http://wolfofantimonyoccultism.tumblr.com/post/142941334371/spirit-guides
Things that can help you find your spirit guides, and guardian angels:
• Just knowing that they exist.
Just to the act of simply acknowledging that they exist will allow you to start building a connection with them. You will start to see their influences in the world, and all of the things that they do for you, that you might not have been previously aware of. Allowing for you to meet them, and to get to know them not through a direct meeting, but through there actions in your life.
• Asking them to appear, and to be ever-present.
This will show them that you are ready to have them in your life. Just like the previous method, it will open you up to experience what they do in your life already. After you ask them to be more present in your life, you should look out for signs of them acting in your life.
• Meditation.
Through the act of meditation one can find their spirit guides, and guardian angels by using their spiritual senses to perceive them. To do this all you will really need to do it enter a meditative state, open your third eye, and call to them. They should come to you, and show you their presence, and once they do you guys can begin your communication, and learning of each other. This meeting is most likely going to happen in your sacred space, or astral temple, and is going to rely heavily on your sixth sense’s ability to pick up spiritual constructs.
• Divination.
Divination can be a very useful tool when trying to communicate with anything so why not your Spirit guides, and guardian angels. All you need to do is get some form of divination method of your choice, and ask your spirit guides, and guardian angels to answer through it. Then simply begin asking questions to it as normal, and they will answer through the act of your divination tools. This will allow you to communicate with them, and get to know them better. This is a very good method, especially when you can not get into a meditative state, or when you do not have a complete grasp of using your sixth sense abilities.
• Dream.
If you know how to lucid dream, you can always call out for them in your dreams and they will appear to you there. If you cannot lucid dream, you can always ask your spirit guides, and guardian angels to appear to you in your dreams before you go to bed, and they may come to you and your dreams. That’s all there really is to it.
• Astral projection.
Astral projection can be quite helpful, when trying to communicate with any entity this also includes your spirit guides, and guardian angels. all you have to do is astral projecting and you will be able to find your Spirit guides and guardian angels on the astral plane and communicate with them.
• And much more, that I’m probably forgetting, while writing this.

Magic idea: using the Iliad (and Odyssey) for magic
While likely not historical, this is an idea I’ve grown fond of. So, let’s start.
Words are powerful. Especially those of texts that have moved, inspired, developed, and nurtured entire cultures—such as the Iliad and Odyssey. These epics have persisted on for thousands of years. For those thousands of years, they’ve been appraised, cried upon, inspired laughter, and more. They’re powerful.
Therefore, using the verses of the great epics of old is extremely powerful. Though, the question is how you use them within the realms of magic. (And not just strictly witchcraft — not all magical practices are witchcraft.) For someone like I, with this book so dear to my heart, I’d be evoking the sentimental power, the power of verse, etc. For this post I will be referencing the Iliad because that’s the epic I prefer, but this applies to the Odyssey too.
Now, the question is how do we use the verses. My idea is to associate certain passages with feelings, vibes, etc. That probably doesn’t make sense, so here’s a passage about great-hearted Patroklos:
The Iliad, Homer. Translation by Peter Green
Then the valiant son of Menoitios made him this answer: “How can such things be? Lord Eurypylos, what shall we do? I’m on my way with a message to warlike Achilles from Gerēnian Nestōr, protector of the Achaians. But I’ll not, even so, abandon you in your distress.” With that, one arm round the waist of the people’s shepherd, he led him off to his hut. His henchman saw them, spread oxhides. Patroklos made him lie down, with a knife cut out of his thigh the sharp arrow, washed the black blood from the wound with water that was warm, then applied a bitter root after crushing it up in his hands, a painkiller, that allayed all his pangs: the wound began drying, the blood ceased to flow.
- Patroklos to Eurypylos, The Iliad Book 21 translated by Peter Green
This scene talks about healing, therefore it could be a passage associated with healing. Secondly, this passage shows great compassion from Patroklos. He could’ve let Eurypylos bled out but he didn’t. Patroklos also demonstrates his mastery of herbalism, as he expertly uses a root to stop the pain. Therefore I would use this passage for healing and compassion.
Another association would be the ‘fuck you’ speech Akhilleus gives to Agamemnon. This one has a beautiful array of insults, gifted from the much-adored Akhilleus:
The Iliad, Homer. Translation by Peter Green
You wine-sodden wretch, dog-faced, deer-hearted, not once have you dared to arm yourself for battle with your troops, or joined in an ambush with the Achaian chieftains! Oh no, such things spell death to you. Better by far to range here through the broad camp of the Achaians and take back the gifts of whoever speaks out against you! A king that feeds off his commons, who rules mere nonentities! Otherwise, son of Atreus, this new outrage would be your last. This, though, I will tell you, and swear a great oath besides: By this staff—which never again will put out leaves or shoots since the day it first left its tree stump in the mountains, nor will it flourish afresh, since the bronze has stripped it of leaves and bark, and now those sons of the Achaians who render judgments, who safeguard the ordinances of Zeus, carry it in their hands—this will be my great oath for you: One day the need for Achilles will hit the Achaians’ sons, every man jack of them—then, for all your grief, you’ll not be able to help them, when many at the hands of Hector, killer of men, fall dying; you’ll eat out the heart within you, incensed that you failed to honor the best of the Achaians.
— Achilles to Agamemnon. The Iliad, Book 1 translated by Peter Green
As the amazing fuck you verse it is, this could be great for cursing, hexing, banishing, etc. Akhilleus calls Agamemnon weak and tells him he’ll never appreciate what Akhilleus has given him. So this is also a good verse against an ungrateful boss or two. The pure passion and hatred of this line is blood-racing.
Though there are some passages I would be wary of using. Not because of the language, but because of what I would be evoking. Not only does Akhilleus go through such grief he kills dozens of Trojans and fights a river, he also goes through a self-inflicted love curse, which causes love madness (see: Ancient Greek Love Magic.) He also threatens to cannibalise Hektor, which is miasma inducing and would sacrifice his humanity. Akhilleus also sacrifices twelve living Trojans to Patroklos at his funeral. Also, as highlighted by Gods and Heroes: Apollon
Achilles was a young man in transition between adolescence and social maturity; his return from war would have marked his adulthood.
— Gods and Heroes: Apollon
Not only that, he also cuts off his hair and offers it to Patroklos. This is significant because young men would cut their hair and offer it to a local river god or nymphs as an initiation rite. But, he sacrifices it to Patroklos. Essentially giving away his now-lost adulthood to his love.
There are many more associations to be made and there’s no true single interpretation of one. I can’t possible provide an entire list of associations with every single verse of the Iliad. So, here’s my idea: a few new tags called #pagan magic: the Iliad, #pagan magic: the odyssey and #pagan magic: homer. I chose to put pagan in front of it because #magic: the Iliad is filled with posts already. The reason for #pagan magic: homer is for associations with both of homer’s works.
Feel free to reblog, the association with a verse and with the verse quoted. The more spiritual gnosis we can create, the better. Just be genuine. Now, go off and banish a fool with the works of Homer and have fun!

If people want to go down the whole Greek Magical Papyri route then there are spells which utilizes Homeric verses and could be used as inspiration. For example:
PGM IV. 467-68 Charm to restrain anger: “Will you dare to raise your mighty spear against Zeus?”
PGM IV. 469-70 To get friends: “Let… seize, lest we become a joy to our enemies."
PGM IV. 2145-2240 Divine assistance from three Homeric verses "After saying this, he drove the solid-hoofed horses through the ditch.” “and men gasping out their lives amid the terrible slaughter.” “and they washed off in the sea the sweat that covered them.”

Other ideas to celebrate:
Give offerings to the spirits by adding a plate at your table.
Harvest the last of your herbs before winter.
Use the night for spell casting, divination, and reading tarot.
Take a walk in nature, preferably near or inside a cemetery.

How To Tell If You’ve Been Cursed
The Egg Test
Simply take an egg (obviously from your own chickens is best but uh, Im going to assume most of you dont have one so store is fine), and carefully pass the egg through the flame of a white or black candle to “draw out the bad” and set intent. Then crack into a white bowl.
If you find blood: You’re cursed! Blood is never ever a good thing to find in your eggs, but especially during The Egg Test.
If you find big white clots: The bigger the clot the bigger the problem. It usually means some kind of blockage or obstruction in your life. Sometimes from some form of bad energy.
If you find egg shell: (Now if you’re really bad at cracking eggs maybe ignore this one) but this is a sign of your generic brand Bad Luck.
If you find a broken yolk: Take notice of your internal and subconcious self. The root of your problems comes from a disturbance within.
If you find something unusual: Listed above or otherwise, cleansing methods (such as a salt bath) will usually clean up most problems. Do your own research for cleansing methods of choice. I would advise not to eat the egg, but rather to pass the egg one final time (in the bowl) over the white flame before disposing off it outside. If you do cook it (because hey, I get it) use protective herbs like basil or rosemary and don’t forget to salt!
If you find nothing unusual: chop onions, mushrooms, and spinach up while heating an oiled pan on medium low. Add the egg to the pan, when a yellow film forms around the side and the egg can be separated easily, fill the center with toppings and flip half over to form an omelet. Cook through, flipping as needed. Season with salt, pepper, fresh herbs, and tomato (salsa if you’re frisky). That’s my favorite way to cook an egg!
The Language of Spell Crafting
Spell creation is one of the most personal and individualized part of a magician’s craft. Between each kind of magician, there are different methods of magic and spell-work. Then, between those kinds, there are sections and lineages who draw their inspirations from different places. Within those lineages, there are individuals who pull from their own life and sense of the world to craft their spells. There can be a lot said about a witch when looking at their spells. The different cultures, the subtle differences in elements or components, the incantation, the ritual action, etc. It’s all very telling of who they are as a practitioner.
Solely relying on others’ spells can take away the identity of the practitioner. Don’t get me wrong; taking spells from books, blogs, websites, etc is not a bad thing. It helps a great deal, especially when you need something specific and they have it when you’re not sure how to get there. I think that’s why I get spell requests so often. I’ll tell you a secret though; not even half of those spells are in the Black Book. They were created there and then for the person who requested them.
But how? How do you connect the ends? I think it’s important that you reread that last line, but in a different light. There is no definite way of creating spells. There are common factors in spells to make them successful, but they do not limit individuality. It’s all individualized and up to the practitioner. The way they make spells, the way they cast spells, and the way they approach spells can help them understand who they are as a practitioner. So I’ll pose the question again. “How do you connect the ends?”
Factors
I mentioned before that in most spells, there are common factors. Many witches and magicians use these as guidelines for crafting spells. There are three factors that are the most often encountered in age old spells.
1. Intention/Willpower/Want
2. Incantation (whether spoken aloud or internally)
3. Ritual action
While the last two components may be interchanged in order, the first must be spread out through the entire operation. To cease the intent is to deprive the fire of oxygen, and thus end the spell before it starts.
These three things are fairly self explanatory.
Before you do a spell, you have to want it. You have to want it badly enough that you’d bend the world to get it. That desire fuels your will, your intent, and seeps into the words you say and the actions you perform. When focused and harnessed, it sets your work ablaze and makes it come true. This want can also be replaced with need, which can quicken a spell faster than almost any other power.
The spoken part of a spell is often what many people mistake for the spell itself. Incantations are only words. When power is put behind them, then they have the chance to make magic. Rhyming has been a popular method of incantation for a very long time, but incantations simply speaking the caster’s intention have been just as popular. Many people like to create their incantations before creating the rest of their spell, some after. Some also speak theirs intuitively in the midst of casting the spell.
The ritual action is often what drags the spell into fruition. The act of ritual mimicry has been used for millennia across every culture in nearly every magical tradition as a way to create change in the world. That which is mimicked is created. Skins and pelts are worn for shapeshifting, stabbing and smashing have been used for curses, wrapping and tying have been used for binding, etc. The ritual action mimics what the creator wishes to bring into the world. For the practitioner, their ritual action should speak to whatever the goal is to them symbolically. I know of another traditional witch who’s spoken on the subject with the same ideas, here, if anyone else wanted to take a look.
Components and Ingredients
I like to use cooking as a metaphor for spell-work. Why? Because everything has to be cohesive and harmonious. Otherwise, the spell will be haywire or shite. When you create a spell, you have to take everything into account. Remember, specifics are important. I’m not just talking about incantations. I’m talking about knowing what you want, down to the nitty gritty. Let’s say that we’re cooking up a love spell. Except, this isn’t your run of the mill love spell. Let’s say that this love spell isn’t looking to inspire lust, or at least not to a large degree, rather strong affections. One of the first things I think of is what elements or ingredients speak to my goal, based on previously earned knowledge and old folklore. If we’re talking about gentle love, I’ve got a few go-to elements; a small amount of vanilla bean, dried apple flesh, and a pinch of coriander. These components will be bound together and put into a doll or a pouch. The name of the one who is to be charmed is whispered over it and kissed. What do these components have in common? Sweet things. Vanilla is sweet and warm, and so are apples. They make me think of home and a warm oven, a hearth (or in this case a heart). Coriander is that touch of spice needed to move things along, but it doesn’t overpower the other two. Whispers to a lover’s ear and a soft kiss I also see as sweet things. This is a charm of romance. It’s a delicate thing, though with a simple spell. It’s incredibly easy to upset it. Adding more things like cinnamon, clove, or allspice, though used in making sweet things and baking, could have turned that lover into a lust addled fool. Using saliva instead of a kiss could’ve also done the same. What could’ve also harmed the spell is if wildly different ingredients are mixed together. Bleeding hearts, vanilla bean, and orris root would make for a rather unruly, or confused, spell. They are all associated heavily with love and love magic, but each constitutes different subtleties about what love is or what love means, thus each warrants a different use in a different situation. Is there a time when one of those two are married, or maybe even all three? Perhaps. This will be a very specific case, though. The goal of the spell must be spoken in the actual components of the spell just as much as in the words and the actions. The ingredients are not to be thrown together with general (and sometimes sloppy) associations found in Barnes and Noble witch books. They are to be carefully chosen, handled, and married to produce the most fluent, successful spell. What is done with those components is just as important as the components itself. Actions and Deeds Cursing for one person might be pricking a wax image with hot needles, but for another it might be lighting that wax image on fire and watching it burn. Different circumstances, styles, and magicians will make for different approaches. A bone that is crushed and blown on the wind will conjure spirits, but the crushing of the bone itself could also remove influence from spirits in the area. It is the intention, as well as the other factors of the spell, that will decide this. The physical nature of spells if often written off in New Age methods and modern ways. Traditional spell-casting is tethered to some sort of action that serves as a symbol and a doorway through which the spell enters the world. Are these actions incredibly complex? Absolutely not. Witches have been calling up winds and storms with nothing but whistling for a long time. Witches also have been reputed to cast spells simply by staring or touching things. This lore is as old as anything and exists alongside witches in many cultures. An action, no matter how minute, is an intention put forth and succeeded. It breaks the barrier of the mental and causes something to become real. Actions are results. As with all of the other part of a spell, this needs to be unified with everything else. Harsh, quick motions won’t do for a spell that is to inspire gentle love. It needs a soft hand. What that looks like depends on the magician. It’s important to remember that when choosing actions for spellwork they must resonate with the practitioner. A protection spell might involve waving a rod of oak over the boundaries of one’s home. It might also be slapping the stick off of the ground around the boundaries of the home. Whatever the intention and style of the practitioner will influence how a spell is cast. It tells a story about who they are, what they’ve done, where they’ve learned, and the nature of their magic. Though the differences might be slight, it shows the individuality of the practitioner. Bonus: Sacrifices
Most modern practitioners have no idea what this word truly means, let alone how to use it in magic. The word conjures up images of animals being cut open, bloody knives, and killing. Though this is a form of sacrifice, it is not all sacrifice. Simply put, sacrifice is the giving up of something in exchange for something else. That thing you give up, though, has to be something of value to you. It’s not sacrifice unless it stings. The use of sacrifice in spellwork causes the magic to burn hotter and brighter. It works faster and it becomes stronger. It also tends to make magic a bit more permanent. It can look like a pin prick on the finger, but it can also be someone destroying gifts from someone to set a spell on them. It can be offerings, taken from yourself, and given to spirits or deities in exchange for favors. It can be burning a treasured photograph of a lover to make them love you back. This aspect of spellwork has become increasingly less popular over time, with people not wanting to pay for what they ask. It is not always a necessary part of magic, but the strongest spells have some form of sacrifice behind them. As artists bleed for their passions, so must the magicians for their magic. It makes it real, especially in the practitioner’s eyes. You wouldn’t give something you cherished unless you truly believed in the goal looking to be accomplished. Individualizing
If there is one thing that I’ve tried to stress in spellcrafting, it’s individualization. A witch’s spells are not their own until they’ve individualized them. Just as all of witchcraft is very personal, so must the spells be. They should speak to your goal, but they should be using your voice to do it. Read from the folklore, follow the legends, listen to past uses, but make everything your own. Maybe you’ll figure out how to apply the folklore of birch bark in a different way than most witches would. Maybe you’ll figure out how to be-spell a new working tool to do something that most witches don’t know of. Who knows? The world is quite wide. Methods of spellcasting vary between lands. What lands do you descend from? What can they inform you of spellcasting? Can you join the knowledge of one and the other? Can you make a method that is entirely for you? Spellcrafting is a trying thing. It is a subtle art and not an easy task to master. It’s also incredibly personal. It’s a language with thousands of different dialects, and millions of different accents. How will you speak it?

New Year Tarot Spread
Similar to the one I use in my readings! This is a great way to figure out what lies ahead of you in the new year.
Tips for writing spells:
If you want to keep something close, bury it in your back yard. If you want to attract something, bury it under the front door step If you want to destroy its influence, burn it. If you want it to move away and sink, throw it in running water If you want to disperse it to a distance, throw it into a crossroads If you want to fix its influence, inter it in a five-spot pattern If you want it to work by means of spirits, bury it in a graveyard If you want to hide its point of origin, conceal it in a tree If you want it to work in secret, give it in food or drink If you want it to work by stealth, hide it in clothing or on objects If you want its influence to begin or strengthen, throw it East If you want its influence to end or weaken, throw it West If you want its influence to rise and fall cyclicly, float it in a tidal estuary
Oh, guys. Oh. Guys. This, if you’re ever stuck on how to perform a spell! Handy little guide of awesome.
If you want to work with ancestors or guardian spirits, put it to the North. If you want to work from a place of innocence, put it to the South. If you want its effect to be strong and quick, burn it. If you want it to curse- burn it then bury in the West of a crossroads. If you want to break curses, soak it in water in the West. If you want to add extra power to your spell, dance before dealing with the incantation. If you want it to work by means of spirits, call to the directions If you want it to work by demons, put it in the forever-dark place If you want it to work by angels, burn then put ashes into sanctified water. If you want it to cleanse, shred it and bind in a bundle of sage. If you desire freedom from a situation- do it behind your back.
Fantastic. And remember that these are great suggestions but not rules
