Noah had revealed that part of his reason for wanting to be at home was a near mind breaking sense of guilt. He’d felt so worn down about not being able to be at home to help you or be a father that he'd barely slept while he’d been away on this run of shows. You know that it had been bad for him while they’d been in Europe. Last year had been the first year Andie had been genuinely excited for the holidays and Noah had felt so terrible about not being with you, that he’d overloaded the both with Christmas presents.
In the four years since becoming a father Noah’s opinion on so many things had changed radically. When it had just been the two of you, the holidays had always been more tense than fun. Sure, he’d become more comfortable with the idea of spending Christmas with friends and your family over time, but there was always this edge.

Laurie has twenty minutes left on the clock when Noah steps into the little café on their street. Enough time for him to pick up something sweet for them, he reckons. Laurie will appreciate it, he’s sure of that.
His sweet tooth has started to colour off on her, and it makes him feel all warm and gooey inside.
When they’d first started to go out Laurie had insisted on her pitch black coffee, and now she occasionally lets him pick whatever he thinks looks best. Summer is just around the corner now and the days are starting to get longer again — the perfect time to waste a couple of hours by the lake with their books and a couple of drinks. These early summer days have become his favourite time of the year since he’s met her.
Laurie has brought a lightness into his life. Some of it is actively her doing, but a good chunk of it has simply come to him with a little encouragement. Knowing that it was okay for him to build back the walls he’d constructed and to allow himself a little bit of grace and softness had done wonders of for him. Since they’d gotten together Noah had allowed himself to explore all sorts of different sides. Before they’d met he never would have considered himself to be submissive but here he is. She’d shown him that he can be soft without being less of a man. Noah had gained so much genuine confidence in himself in the last few years that he's actually considering the open mic night in a bar across town — the one that comes with a slot at the live show for the community festival at the end of the summer.
He hasn’t told Laurie about it yet. She’ll be ecstatic of course, but telling her also means that it’s real and that’s actually doing it.
When he enters the store, Laurie is in the middle of ringing up a guy. He loves watching her at work. She’s always so happy to help people find the right thing for them — even if they don’t even know what they’re looking for yet. Somehow Laurie always knows which record needs to go to which person. She’s brought him things he’s never heard of before, and they always hit the spot. Noah doesn’t know how she does it. He watches as she hands the guy a flyer to the bar with the open mic night before she sends him on his way. Noah quickly steps up to the counter before someone else gets the chance.
“I was wondering if you have something you could recommend? I want to get a little surprise for my girlfriend.” he says, leaning against the counter.
Laurie grins at him, “That’s sweet of you. Anything in particular your girlfriend likes?”
He hums, pretending to be deep in thought, “She likes Bob Iver and Sufjan and—” he holds up the paper bag, “Sandwiches with pickled onions.”
Laurie’s eyes light up.
“Screw this. Amy I’m leaving early.”
He can’t help but laugh when she rushes towards the back of the shop to pick up her bag. She’s at his side not even two minutes later. As soon as she’s close to him, Laurie pulls him down for a kiss.
“I missed you.” she whispers against his lips, “Let’s have lunch.”
“It’s barely been six hours and I stopped by to bring you a fresh coffee.” Noah replies with a smile, “But I missed you too.”
Their usual spot is taken much to Noah’s dismay.
Laurie diverts them to a different spot, closer to the water. They won’t be able to sit in the shade, but it’ll be nice to sit in the sun for a while. The important thing is that he’s with his favourite girl.
He loves that they get to have these moments. Before Laurie, he’d been so fixated on trying to survive that he barely lived. Noah’s the first to admit that having a stable place to live and less pressure to make the music work so that he’ll have money to eat had definitely helped. Laurie had encouraged him to get a part-time job, just to take a little bit more of the pressure away, and now he actually enjoys playing live again.
“I was thinking about inviting Nick for dinner some time? Little birdie told me that girl he went out with a few times dumped him.”
Noah feels his heart sink. Nick had looked so happy with her. This must have come entirely out of nowhere.
“Oh no. Did he come by?”
She nods, “Stopped by just after ten. Apparently it just happened. Said he’d call you after his shift.”
It breaks his heart to know that Nick is hurting like this. If he could, he’d make sure that Nick would never have to feel like this ever again. He’s watched Nick get into one relationship after the other, always so hopeful that this girl will be the one, but he always ends up with a broken heart.
“We gotta do something.” Noah says as he takes a bite out of his sandwich.
“Maybe you could take Folio up on that fishing trip he’s been trying to get you to go on with him. Might be good to get him out of the city for a bit.”
“You’re just trying to get me out of the house.” Noah says in mock protest.
“That too.” she gives his thigh a little squeeze, “You do need to get out more. A weekend away with someone who isn’t me would be good for you.”
Noah grumbles out a displeased fine and makes a plan to call Nick when they get home.
He loves the little routines they have. Their little lunch dates in the park, their long, drawn out weekend mornings and the evenings they spend curled up on the sofa.
Noah looks over to Laurie, as they stroll back towards their little apartment. She seems to be entirely lost in her own thoughts and Noah thinks that she’s never looked prettier. He untangles their fingers, allowing him to instead drape his arm across his her shoulders. Laurie lets out a little giggle when he pulls her against his side.
He presses a kiss to the top of her head.
The sun has warmed her skin so pleasantly, and he can’t wait for them to be in the privacy of their own four walls. He’s been feeling all sorts of wired up today and usually the only way to sort his brain out again is to lay his head in Laurie lap and let her play with his hair until that terrible feeling dissipates again.
All he can hope for now is that Laurie has a little bit of mercy with him and just gives him what he wants without making him ask.
Once they’ve changed out of their street clothes, and Laurie has had a moment to decompress after work they reconvene on the sofa. Noah’s glad that they kept the massive sofa Laurie had in her old place. There’s so much space for them to curl up together in various different positions. And when Nick comes over there’s enough space for him too.
Laurie sits down next to him and Noah wordless slides down so that he can rest his head in her lap. She lets out a little chuckle at his eagerness, but doesn’t say anything more. Instead, she wordlessly trails her fingers across the side of his face and up his temple. The sweet and gentle touch she gives him always makes his heart feel at ease.
“How was work?” She asks softly, “Is it still fun?”
“Still fun. But I heard so many renditions of Sweet Home Carolina today that I want to cry.”
"Oh honey.” Laurie says with a chuckle, “Poor baby. I’m glad you’re still having fun with it. Joll’s a good guy I knew you’d two would get along.”
“He said he’d let me use the studio he has in his basement if I need it.”
“That’s good. Maybe he could help you get a demo done too.” She says between gentle passes through his hair, “Even if you don't end up doing anything with it.”
Noah gives an absent-minded nod.
Laurie has so much faith in him.
From the very start she’s been his number one supported. He remembers how she’d looked at him during that first open mic night. She’s always been in his corner, always unconditionally so.
She gazes down at him with that pretty little smile of hers. Sometimes he can’t quite believe that he gets to have this girl. He loves that they’ve picked up little pieces of each other over the years. Seeing something of himself in her makes his chest feel so very warm. Spotting songs he’s send her on her playlists, her blossoming friendship with Nick, it’s all so dear to him.
He's never felt this much for someone.
Laurie is without a doubt his person. There’s no one else he’d rather be with. No one he'd rather spend his evenings with. Laurie brings out the best in him. She makes him feel as if anything’s possible, no dream he has is too big or too impossible to accomplish, and he knows that she’d move heaven and hell for him if he'd made any kind of indication in that direction. And he’d do the same for her — no questions asked.
He reaches for her free hand, effortlessly tangling their fingers together.
“I’m gonna play the open mic at Teddie’s.” He says after a moment of silence.
Laurie’s hand pauses mid pass through his hair, “Noah.”
“I don’t know if I’m gonna win but — I want to play your song on that big stage.”
Noah swears that he sees a tear slip across her cheek.
“Honey.” She whispers then, “Noah I — I can’t wait for them to see how good you are. If you don’t win that’s their loss.”
“Then I’ll just be your personal musician.”
“Do not ever think about hiding your talent. I swear if I have to force you —”
“I know I know. I’ll just need some time to lick my wounds if I don’t win it.”
He pulls their joined hands towards his lips so that he can press a kiss against the back of her hand.
“It's scary but you’ll be there and — you’re my lucky charm. Can’t lose if I have you.” He grins at her.
“Dork,” Laurie flicks her fingers against his cheek, “I’m so proud of you regardless of what happens. You’ll do great, I just know it.”
He calls Nick while Laurie gets started on their food and invites him over for the next day. A part of him wants to walk over to his place right this moment and bring him back here. He just can’t stand the idea of Nick being sad like this. It makes his chest ache a little to know that a guy like Nick, who is so sweet and caring, keeps getting his heart broken. Sometimes Noah wonders if that feeling in his chest is normal or if it’s perhaps a little more than friendship. But then he looks at Laurie and all thoughts about it wash away again. He already has the prettiest girl — there’s nothing no one else he could want. And so he pushes the idea to the back of his head again and re-joins Laurie in the kitchen. He wraps his arms around her middle as if nothing out of the ordinary at all has just whirred through his head.
He has everything he could possibly want and ask for.
