Unsettling makima fanarts>>>
I see a nurse. I draw Mimi.
World of Horror is apparently getting an update, which has sent me back to looking up history of 1980s Japan. While I’m mostly interested in post 1945 to 1950 Japan, the 80s has such a unique aesthetic that makes researching fun. The bubble really was a once in a lifetime kind of experience it seems.
I like the idea of WoH player characters that are secret agents for the USA, China, Russia, etc etc. Were there any notable international incidents in Japan during the appropriate time period?
None that I can think of at the moment or find in my research. The most notable thing I can find right now is a sex scandal involving Prime Minister Uno. Most of the world was more focused on Japan's rise in economic status as it entered its bubble economy. There was an incident involving Paul McCartney (Beatles member) being caught bringing pot into the country and having to be deported because of it.
An early 20th century postcard against the coercion of motherhood and promoting the usage of contraception.
Mirror's Edge
So I've been doing a playthrough of Mirror's Edge for the first time in a long time and it reminds me why it's one of my favorite games that I keep coming back to. If you don't know, Mirror's Edge is basically a parkour game that takes place in a vague city state where you play a courier named Faith, with couriers being one of the last ways to transport messages and packages safely without government oversight and censorship. You avoid the police while discovering a conspiracy that threatens the couriers and Faith's very own sister.
While the story is fairly simple and leaves much to be desired, one aspect that draws me in is the subtle world building. You get sections where on the billboards it makes notes of trying a nicotine patch product so as to "not break the law!" Then a blink and you miss it radio broadcast informs us that all tobacco and various other such products have been deemed illegal by the city mayor and most likely have been for a while. You then get messages left by other couriers commenting on what is happening in game and giving us a glimpse into just their mundane life. Or when you're in an elevator and you get to read a section on the November Riots and how that event calls back to a number of characters' backstories, including Faith's, and how it still matters in the present.
I really appreciate when a studio does something like this, giving life to a world that unfortunately has to be empty due to budget and time constraints, as well as other factors. It makes it feel like your character is affecting the world while giving people some personality as well.
I also like to think that the Runners symbolize both literal and spiritual freedom. You have the lower class who have to go underground thanks to the oppression of the upper class who literally live and rule above them in skyscrapers and high rises. But, the Runners are both figuratively and literally above those in government, running along the rooftops and going beyond the bounds of societal rules and authority (which has its pros and cons). I mean, Faith literally says in the beginning of the game that the Runners live in between society, on the "Mirror's Edge" (make an insert credits here joke).
evaluating possible trans girl characters in chainsaw man
DENJI the old reliable. chainsaw man trans fandom has already gone over this one in extensive detail
POWER any honest woman should admit the breast padding is absurdly coded. there's like three different ways you could do this and all of them are hilarious. -trans because she's a girl who took a boy's body (world's first cisgender trans woman) -trans because she's a genderless devil who took a trans woman's body (assigned trans female at rebirth) -trans because she's a boy devil who took a girl's body (this is a TSF doujin plot, without love her thawing maidenly heart cannot be seen)
AKI HAYAKAWA has no clue what he wants to do with his life aside from pushing everyone who loves him away as he chases a suicidal dream and runs as fast as his feet can carry him from his survivor's guilt. this isn't actually a gendered trauma but i've met like 200 burnout trans women with this emotional palette and a little ego death and symbolic rebirth might be good for him. get in the dress aki. himeno and angel are going to love you
KOBENI you think your only real career options are to either commit to a life of murderous violence - which you're horrifyingly competent at, but also find shameful and terrifying! - or to sell your body as a prostitute, the idea of which your parents are apparently completely unfazed by. this is an 'all forced labor is degrading' and 'misogyny is endemic in the nuclear family' beat but is there another axis of oppression you would like to share with the class?
KISHIBE pining after the same beautiful lesbian for twenty years and performatively trying to get into her pants with full knowledge that she's going to keep rejecting you yet having her love and forgiveness anyway for reasons neither of you understand and knowing that she loves women even before she does and being her friend even after she ghosts you… okay dyke. what was that pingtsi said about not having anything left in your body to pay for contracts with again?
MAKIMA the apocalypse of john inexplicably records her - and all of her visibly-female sisters who have never been seen outside of their underwear - as men. which could mean nothing. never heard of normal human intersexuality or transness in the public safety basement she grew up in and probably invented her own mythology based on the classical education they clearly shoved down her throat to explain why she never grew up into the man they expected. definitely not traumatized at all
ASA MITAKA her mother never told her the real reason she killed her husband was because he would have abused his trans daughter if he knew what asa had told her only a few days earlier, but asa knows. she always knew. stealth trans kid determined not to cause trouble for herself by being anything but a normal straight girl in the same way she's determined not to be autistic. gets through the orphanage and public school situation alright before yoru and denji get her with the steel chair
REZE if you make one traumatized alienated living weapon girl trans then you have to spread the love but it's almost impossible to reconcile this one with her living situation. two options: -handsome russian 'boy' shows up to steal Chainsaw Woman's heart but learns something new both about her and about himself during the pool scene -Dorley girl style Reze who got forcefemmed because teenage girls make better honeypot assassins than teenage boys and adapted to survive

my "How 2 Start Reading Batman Comics" zine I debuted at MICE this year! it was soooo much fun to put together, especially for baby's first mini-zine. Printed, it's only 6 interior pages and about medium hand size.
reminder: this is written for people who genuinely have no idea where to start, and it's from the POV of someone (me) who managed to get into Batman this way!
I liked this post, scrolled for like another minute before I went “SHIT FUCK SHIT” and scrolled back to reblog it
I always reblog this one when I see it on my dash. When someone posts their own art, writing, or music here they are really hoping you will share it.
To anybody out there that is interested in an anime style superpower tabletop game with a dark tone, I would highly recommend checking out the TTRPG Double Cross. I'm going to making a post about my thoughts on the system as a whole and its pros and cons but if you're interested in running something in veins of Certain Scientific Railgun or Darker than Black - Or Resident Evil with superpowers, as my friends describe it - I would check it out on Drive Thru RPG.
Manhattan Cafe
Manhattan Cafe's career run is absolutely my favorite so far. First off, love the fact that Cafe is just the supernatural Uma of the cast. One of the side events is the Trainer being haunted by some kind of entity that Cafe has to protect them from and she's constantly talking to spirits. It just hits all the right paces and buttons for me when it comes to this character.
I love her growth as a character. When I saw Beginning of a New Era, I legit thought her "friend" was just some kind of figment of her mind or something but now it's kind of clear that you can take it that way but it more supports that it's an actual spirit. And then the plot of the career is you learning what her friend means to her and how she grows as person to go beyond just racing her friend. And how her friend is pushing her to think more in terms of herself and what she wants.
Also, gotta talk about Agnes Tachyon. I always kind of thought that if you picked one character, the other characters also have their own Trainers, but it appears that isn't always the case. In this run, Agnes actually does abandon Plan A and goes into Plan B to focus on Manhattan Cafe, pretty much retiring from running. The two bounce off each other really well here and I had to go back to Tachyon's career to see how much it differs. I think I like this one more as it feels they really develop a friendship and I was devastated when Tachyon said that we might never see her again.
Anywho, this is just me ranting about how much I loved this career and that Manhattan Cafe is definitely one of my favorite characters.
