The First Dark Type Gym

It was a long time coming, and many years of hard work, but finally, the doors to the first dark type gym were open, and gym leader Sebastian was ready to reward Pokémon trainers with the Moonlight Badge.

The building he had used as a temporary gym and apartment for himself and Rino was currently under renovation to become a proper house for them to live in. The apartment had been fine, but now that his gym was complete and funded by the League, Sebastian could put his money towards improvements like this. And also, his sister was now working as an architect and had insisted on doing this for them.

Things were busy once trainers started coming, but it was what Sebastian had wanted and he couldn’t be happier. After a long night of running his gym, Sebastian would crawl into bed next to a certain long haired man and softly kiss his cheek before falling asleep.

Mending the Bonds

The reunion with his parents hadn’t been easy. It started off fine, but his dad couldn’t help the criticisms in his outburst. There had been a lot of pent up emotions in their family, and he let it all out. Thankfully his mom was just glad Sebastian was okay and actually happy with his life, so she was able to calm his dad down.

Sebastian apologized for his manner of departure and lack of communication and a few other things he felt guilty for, and then shared how things were going for him. He told them what he had been up to since he left, and how his plans for a dark type gym were coming together, with construction on a temporary place already underway. 

And finally, he introduced Rino. His parents were a little shocked at first, having never been aware of his sexual orientation, but they were definitely still accepting of it. Sebastian’s mom even hugged Rino, and then invited them for dinner the next night.

It wasn’t perfect, but things were finally being patched up.

Family Reunion

Sarah answered the doorbell when Sebastian rang it, and she quietly led him and Rino into the living room. Tension was in the air, even though his parents didn’t know who it was yet. Breathing a deep breath, Sarah called out, “Mom! Dad!” and they impatiently waited.

His mom entered the room first, halfway through asking Sarah who was at the door when she saw Sebastian. She stopped, her eyes widening in disbelief before she rushed forward to embrace her son.

“Sebastian we missed you!” she cried out, breaking into tears as she held him.

He couldn’t seem to accept it at first, but after a moment, he sighed in relief and hugged her back. They were still hugging when he saw his father enter the room.

About a hundred emotions crossed the man’s face before he walked forward to join the embrace. Whatever he had to say could wait for now.

Sarah’s face broke into a smile and she squeezed Rino’s arm in joy as they watched on, waiting the moment out.

Sarah crinkled her eyebrows in confusion. “But then you weren’t born half a day apart? I don’t get it.”

She had cleared one of her three plates of food and set it aside to continue with the second as they shared conversation. Rino certainly was an interesting character and Sarah was glad to finally get to learn more about him since Sebastian had only told her so much.

“No, no, it was just a joke,” Rino replied, grinning and shaking his head. “I didn’t think you’d take it quite so seriously.”

Best to leave it at that than pushing it, he added silently. Rino finished off his first plate about the same time and moved onto his last one, lightly elbowing Sebastian after taking a bite of some fruit he’d picked up.

“Did Sebastian not mention the kidding around?” he teased.

Sarah was still beyond confused, not getting how it was a joke, but there were more interesting things to discuss. 

After a brief moment of silence in which Sebastian awkwardly glanced between them, wondering if he should say something, he just mumbled, “I’m gonna go get more food,” and left the table.

“Ah finally,” Sarah started, a menacing grin on her face that she tried to fix into a glare but failed. She sat back in her chair and crossed her arms. “So... Rino. What are your intentions with my brother?”

He observed Rino’s odd expression, but since Rino just continued as if nothing was wrong, Sebastian didn’t think anything of it. He was enjoying the banter between his sister and boyfriend, and just kept quietly munching at his food.

Sarah and Sebastian hadn’t ever fought over Pokémon since they weren’t relevant in their household, but they could still understand the joys of one-upping each other.

Sarah listened to Rino’s comments and held in her thoughts until he was done speaking, finally bursting out in surprise, “Your mom was in labour for 12 hours?! Geez that’s rough!”

Rino was surprised that Sebastian didn’t comment, but he wasn’t going to push it. Instead, he just took a sip of his drink – pretending as if he just needed to swallow properly – and grinned as he leaned back in his seat.

“…Oh, no, it’s just some twin humor,” Rino replied. “It’s less fun when you’re not identical, but, you know, we still have that.”

Technically true, but ridiculous out of context; Sarah’s reaction was exactly what Rino had been hoping for.

Birthday Fluff

If one thing could always be counted on, it would be Rino’s ability to go out of his way for Sebastian. This naturally included doing things for his birthday, despite his boyfriend not necessarily viewing the day as a big deal.

Sebastian arrived home late that afternoon, as could be expected, and Rino was more than happy to help him warm up a bit. He’d promptly pulled Sebastian into the living room after a welcoming hug, then poured him a mug of the peppermint hot chocolate he’d made earlier.

“Mm, happy birthday, Seb. Would you like your present before or after dinner?”

“Well yeah, but sometimes it was more like he hogged it until he could get some deal out of me.” She reached over and ruffled Sebastian’s hair. “He’s a good brother, but we had to have a bit of rivalry sometimes. Especially once I beat him in the Science Fair despite being younger.” She stuck her tongue out at Sebastian and then looked back at Rino with a shrug. “I guess you’d understand the sibling thing too eh?”

She paused to shovel in a couple more bites of food before adding, “Did you and your sister get up to any shenanigans when you were younger?”

Another laugh followed that story – and the hair ruffling. That was too cute, really… Rino paused to take a few more bites of food as well, then froze for a moment at Sarah’s question. He shrugged it off quickly enough, though, as he reached for his napkin; he could pass it off easily if questioned.

“Well, did I ever mention how we gave our mother so much trouble that we were born half a day apart?” Rino said with a grin. That much was technically true, as far as he knew, anyway. “Oh, and Tange just had to pick the starter Pokémon strong against mine. That was more recent, but it was just awful, I tell you.”

Sarah gave Rino an ‘aww so cute’ look before she started talking again. “Well it took him a while to become nocturnal. I’d say it was the more he read, the later he stayed up, until it became habit. He was surprisingly good at not getting caught up late with his flashlight though.”

“You guys are talking about me like I’m not even here. Besides Sarah, you’re leaving out the bit where you’d sneak into my room because you didn’t have your own flashlight to read by.”

“Hey, I was trying to keep it on me,” Rino answered when Sebastian piped back in. “And are you saying you two would huddle up together with a flashlight between you? Because that’s adorable.”

The last part probably sounded like even more teasing, even if Rino actually meant it. Snorting, he went on, “My sister sleeps like a rock, so it’s not like we would’ve ever been able to do that.”

“Haha that’s great… how long was your hair at the time? ‘Cause if it was as long as it is now that would be wonderful.” Sarah was grinning, clearly enjoying this sharing of childhood events. Even Sebastian was content, though his smile was, as always, less obvious.

“Funny though, with the nightlight thing, it’s like the complete opposite of Sebastian and me! I guess I sorta got it from him, but we both had to have darkness to sleep. Summers in our household were hell for our parents because we couldn’t sleep if it was still light out.”

“Well, it wasn’t quite as long as it was now – thank Arceus.” Rino rolled his eyes. “Just past chin-length, if I remember correctly. Still, you have no idea how much of a pain in the ass it made showers.”

Fortunately, as it had mostly been static, Rino hadn’t ended up hurting himself… But his hair had still ended up fluffing out to about twice its usual size upon getting dried, anyway. He stole a quick glance at Sebastian’s small smile before going on.

“Funny, considering how now he still won’t go to sleep even when it is dark,” he teased. “But, anyway… when I was really little, I had to have the lights completely on; my parents had to come back and turn off my lights after I fell asleep.”

“Oh I think you should share now, since you were hinting at something while we were walking here, and now is as good a time as ever to elaborate.” Sarah gave him a sly smile before spooning mashed potatoes into her mouth.

Sebastian just sat there quietly munching at his food, curious to see if Rino would share anything that he didn’t already know. They had talked about plenty, but there were always new things to learn about each other, as evidenced by Sarah sharing those rather unfortunates tidbits earlier.

“Well, if we’re going to keep going the ‘embarrassing’ route, I’ll freely admit that I slept with a nightlight until I was twelve.” Rino snorted. “And if you want something ‘bad’ that I did, I once lost a library book for a good four months or so…”

He laughed before taking a sip of his drink. What else might Sarah find amusing? It probably helped that there was little that would make him embarrassed now, despite his shyness at the time…

“Oh, and I once managed to bother my mom’s Jolteon enough that my hair stood on end for weeks,” he added after a moment of thought.

Rino’s reassurance made Sebastian smile, and he soon followed to get his own plate of food. He nearly bumped into Sarah on his way; she was juggling three plates of food in her arms but somehow she made it made to the table without dropping anything.

Rather than get everything all in one go, Sebastian preferred to go in stages, so he got one plate to start and headed back to the table before Sarah could start pestering Rino without him.

Rino himself had come back with two plates, and he was almost impressed with Sarah’s ability to balance three of them. He grabbed his fork and started twirling around some of the pasta he’d picked up, waiting for Sebastian to sit back down before he spoke.

“So, shall we tease Seb some more, or would you rather talk about me?” Rino joked, nudging his shoulder into Sebastian’s as he took a bite of food.

“Course I wasn’t kidding! I wouldn’t kid about such delicious food!” Sarah grinned at Rino before talking to the hostess who led them to their table. After taking their drink orders, the woman told them to go help themselves.

“Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m starving! I’m gonna go get me some food!” She quickly vanished over to the buffet area, leaving Sebastian with a welcome moment of quiet.

He sighed, looking up at Rino, his blue eyes a calming sea. “She’s even more enthusiastic than she usually is… it’s nice to see her, but I forgot how exhausting she can be.”

Rino smiled and shook his head in amusement as he watched Sarah bound over to the buffet bars, and then turned back to Sebastian.

“I think she’s fun,” he replied, though he took a moment to give Sebastian’s hand a comforting squeeze since they were alone. “So don’t worry about it. Besides, I’m sure she’ll be directing most of her questions at me, anyway, so…”

…So Sebastian (hopefully) wouldn’t have too much to deal with. After a moment of leaning against the other boy, Rino got up to get a plate as well, returning with a little of just about everything the place had to offer.

“The opposite problem?” Sarah inquired. “Were you a bad boy?” Her voice was mocking, but she was had a huge grin on her face.

They turned down a smaller road and she released Sebastian’s hand. “Wait, hold that thought… we have reached food!” She walked up to the door of the restaurant and held it open for the boys. “Behold, buffet bonanza!”

Rino gave a relieved snort as they arrived at the restaurant. Further stories could wait until they were all in and seated… He nudged Sebastian ahead of him slightly as they walked inside, taking a look around.

“And you picked a nice one,” he commented, obviously impressed. “I don’t think you were kidding when you said they have everything…”

“It was only around the house! I had to read the entire Narnia series, then the Harry Potter series, and the Lord of the Rings series! It was an important time in my literary life!” Sebastian whined, attempting to defend his actions despite the silliness of them. “And late library books go on a record…” His voice faded out as he realized his sister was laughing even more at him now.

“Yupp he sure is precious!” Sarah said in between giggles.

Rino shook his head, trying not to laugh too much more… He knew how important reading was to Sebastian, after all. Still, this was definitely a story that Rino would tuck away in his mind for a while.

“Well, nothing can get in between Sebastian and his books, hmm? Even I can’t distract him from reading sometimes,” Rino teased. “…Honestly, I’m sure my parents would have appreciated me sneaking out to return things; I had the opposite problem.”

Sarah quickly grabbed Sebastian’s other hand and swung it back and forth as they walked. Sebastian was blushing thanks to the both of them, but he was also immensely content so he didn’t say anything.

“Well I’m sure you’d want to hear the story about little naked Seb deciding clothes were too much effort and they were taking away from time he could be reading… or when we were younger and he didn’t want to admit he needed a stuffed animal to sleep so he stole mine… or the time he got caught sneaking out of the house but it was only because he forgot to return the library book on time!” Sarah laughed, bumping her shoulder into her brother’s. “He was certainly entertaining to grow up with.”

Happy as he always was to hold Sebastian’s hand, Sarah latching onto her brother’s other side made Rino quite amused. He shook his head at his boyfriend’s blush, but otherwise didn’t comment on it – though Rino couldn’t help bursting into laughter at Sarah’s story.

“Is this all true, Seb?” Rino teasingly elbowed Sebastian as well. “That’s too precious. Really not all that surprising, but… precious.”

Even if it wasn’t, the idea of all that was still too adorably fitting not to remember, Rino thought as they walked.
