This post got really long, so I apologize! “Guest Advisor” at GameStore. TW for unsanitary and stalking. Once had a man poop his pants while talking to me. This man has feces running down his legs. Doesn’t react whatsoever. It’s like I was being held hostage. Not the worst thing I’ve smelled here, which was the customer at this store who smelled like a mix of alcohol, weed, human excrement, decaying flesh, and more, all of which appeared to be….on him. He was clearly not homeless. Just a #gamer. After helping him, I went to the back and actually threw up. I’ll never forget that.
Another time I had a guy wait for me to leave after closing (it was 11pm, we were the only people in the parking lot), holler at me by name, ask to go hang out later, then get mad at me (still by name) for ignoring him, then follow me to the car and start knocking on my door pathetically demanding that I get out and talk to him because I was being unfair. The scary/sad part is the guy looked like an awkward nerd, probably about 18, and he probably had no idea that he was behaving like a murderer. For some guys it’s like I’m this NPC and if they shop here enough I’ll sleep with them (like I’m not being paid to be here.) It’s not just young guys either, imagine being a kid going to this store with your dad only for him to ask the 23 year old cashier on a date or a hookup right in front of you (really sad because I know these kids are learning from their dads that they don’t have to respect women). Also get dads coming in to argue with me about games, like the man who was talking to me about one game that’s famous for being difficult, and he tells me that although he’s beaten all of them, his two little boys (10 and 11 y/o) couldn’t even beat it, so he knows I wouldn’t be able to! He doesn’t say this in a condescending way, which is even worse, because it means he genuinely thinks that his idiot kids are more competent than any given ADULT female. Also, he said this in response to me saying that I enjoy those games because I like a challenge…..it’s like talking to a wall.
Many male customers are surprised that I know the names of popular games like minecraft and fortnite, so they’re totally floored that I’m more than happy to talk to them about more obscure older games or even, gasp, give them recommendations! My favorite customers are the ones who were surprised that there is a girl here but then come back and thank me for my recommendations. Not all the sexism I get at work is from jerks, some guys are genuinely just naive, and I have this (futile?) hope that maybe I can improve their opinion on women before the internet radicalizes them. It’s ironic how male customers want to be friendly with female employees (NPCs?) but don’t realize that if they actually talk to me normally and don’t treat me like an idiot they’ll find out that I love talking to and hanging out with customers; if you get me talking about games on a slow day I’d stand there and talk to you for hours if you wanted; I’m not mean! I’m very friendly and I love videogames. I don’t love being treated like an idiot…
I could probably fill a book with the customer interactions I’ve had at this store, both good and bad. Mostly bad. So, so bad.
TLDR Man poops his pants while talking to me. Guy chases me in the parking lot at night. Dad calls me an idiot. Gamers are awkward.
Realising you’re never going to have the love you crave is awful.
I knew…
