#nationalreadabookday He loved her and she loved him but it was not that simple. “Deanna I love you,” Lucas said and got down on one knee. “Will you marry me Deanna?” She just stood there, starring at the diamond ring. Tears began to stream down her face. The silence lasted so long that he began to wonder if he had said it out loud or just thought he had. “Lucas,” she began slowly almost a whisper. “Lucas I can’t marry you. You’ll hate me if I stay. I’m broken and you can’t fix me and I don’t know how to be anything else.” She turned her back to him. “You don’t want this. Don’t love me Lucas.” She walked out the door without looking at him Things happened so quickly he was unable to think clearly. She had confused him completely. She drove away crying, her eyes were on the mirror looking back until she could no longer see him. Tears streamed down her face and she started to stop and turn around but she knew he deserved better. He would make someone a fine husband. He was kind, loving, and honest, all the things a woman looks for in a man. Lucas ran until he saw the tail lights disappear into the dark. He fell to his knees and wept like a baby. Finally, he raised himself up and put the ring in his pocket. He would never love that deeply again. She was the first to break his heart and for the rest of his life she would be the one who hurt him the most.
