Ever heard of the music genre Electro Swing? I found it not too long ago, tucked away in some playlist I had never heard of on Spotify. I’m a huge fan of Big Band music, with that classy sound and those powerful vocals that are just accompanied so well by the strong instruments behind them....
Realizations
Today while completing my homework I realized something simple, yet profound. Music works wonders when you need to get work done. What normally takes me multiple hours to do took me less than half the time to get done today. So to all you artists out there....music can be a muse for anything and anyone if you have the right kind at the right time. Actors, try using music to calm nerves before a show or shooting of a scene. Physical artist, (painters, sculptors, etcetera) use music when you have no idea what to make. And authors, use music to cure that pesky writers block (side ripe for writers, a friend of mine who is in the process of writing a book told me that the best cure for block is to write down words on paper whatever they are just to put something on paper. This will eventually turn into a way to overcome our most dreaded fear.).
Realisations
I was working on my senior project today reading through a book that i am using as a source and i came upon this passage, "when scholars and psychologists succeed in defining aspects of our passions and their causes, the remain observers. They remain in the audience. They are not able to produce their sensations at will in the service of a character on stage. Actors can. This creative process remains in the artist's domain." -Uta Hagen. After reading this, i realized just how right Hagen was. Psychologists can figure out what we are trying to show and depict, but they remain unable to produce something to the same effect. Not only is this true for actors, but writers, sculptors, and artists of all sorts. Remember this passage the next time you are criticized for your work and ask yourself this, "Can they do what I know I can?"
