blaseball discord server officially froze 3 years ago
clutching my heart at the thought of her, what remains only as moments of time in capsule. i continue, yet how long is absurd to keep the server at the top of my list, how long am i bargaining for a glimpse of what once was? ¡dale!
who’s gonna tell tumblr that executive dysfunction is more than Not Doing Things?
okay
these are the executive functions. impairment of these functions is executive dysfunction
Oh.
OH
Girl, help. None of my executives are functioning
Clark has got to be one of the best-written horror antagonists in recent memory, and the thing I love most about his character is how the film makes you understand his hardships, while at the same time not using them to justify, excuse, or downplay his actions.
You really get a clear idea of how his own hardships inspire the bad decisions he makes. And at the same time, it doesn't pull any punches in showing you the consequences of those decisions, which ultimately resulted in the creation of the Captain Clark entity.
Yes, I don't doubt that he was going through a very difficult time in his life, but it goes without saying that it doesn't give him the right to lash out at everyone and make their lives difficult. And it sure as hell didn't give him the right to take out his frustrations on his spouse or Mary!!!
That's why I love (to hate) him so much! He's not some run-of-the-mill mustache-twirling villain. He's understandable, relatable, and even sympathetic! And at the same time, the film is smart enough to not use those things that make him understandable, relatable, and sympathetic to excuse the harm and hurt he chose to inflict.
P.S. Mary's crashout on him was absolutely glorious to behold!
Why did God create a dual universe? So he might say, Be not like me. I am alone. And it might be heard. —–- Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves.

I was feeling agitated and artblocked yesterday so I decided to give my brain a rest by watching TV and then the next thing I knew these were in front of me
Project Hail Mary (2026) dir. Phil Lord, Chris Miller Director's Commentary Notes
Something I love about the PHM book that the movie doesn't have time for is all the science experiments and step-by-step figuring things out that Grace has to do. Sometimes he'll do an experiment and then realize afterwards he didn't even need to. It's great. Whenever he's like "this would be a great problem to give to my students" it made me want to try solving the math myself! (But I had the audiobook which made that inconvenient)

Saddest thing ever is reading an academic paper about a threatened or declining species where you can tell the author is really trying to come up with ways the animal could hypothetically be useful to humans in a desperate attempt to get someone to care. Nobody gives a shit about the animals that “don’t affect” us and it seriously breaks my heart
“No I can’t come out tonight I’m sobbing about this entomologist’s heartfelt plea for someone to care about an endangered moth”
This is how I learn there's a moth whose tiny caterpillars live exclusively off the old shells of dead tortoises.
[Image description: text from a section titled On Being Endangered: An Afterthought that says:
Realizing that a species is imperiled has broad connotations, given that it tells us something about the plight of nature itself. It reminds us of the need to implement conservation measures and to protect the region of which the species is a part. But aside form the broader picture, species have intrinsic worth and are deserving of preservation. Surely an oddity such as C. vicinella cannot simply be allowed to vanish.
We should speak up on behalf of this little moth, not only because by so doing we would bolster conservation efforts now underway in Florida, [highlighting begins] but because we would be calling attention to the existence of a species that is so infinitely worth knowing. [end highlighting]
But is quaintness all that can be said on behalf of this moth? Does this insect not have hidden value beyond its overt appeal? Does not its silk and glue add, potentially, to its worth? Could these products not be unique in ways that could ultimately prove applicable?
End image description]

I was so inspired by this I made it into a piece of art for a final in one of my courses for storytelling in conservation
lessons that I was surprised but happy to take away from the artemis II mission:

The crew needs to publish a book of poetry IMMEDIATELY
Science is unifying and should be funded instead of wars!!
Microsoft outlook and press-to-talk technology is even sometimes difficult for the smartest, most trained humans on (and off) the planet to manage
i think there is a statue of grace. on the campus of the university where he got his phd. it's a big base, like the statue atop it is going to be a larger than life hero standing brave. but instead it is him, life size, sitting with his feet dangling off the edge and turned slightly to the side like he is in conversation.
there is room to sit next to him. students like to hop up and sit next to dr. grace to get advice, vent, just take a minute. he's a friend to all on campus
relistening to the audiobook and got inspired!
