Chance Methods and Conditional Design.
We started this semester in my Visual Communication class by researching designers and studios that practice chance methodology. We looked into the work of Luna Maurer at Studio Moniker and her Conditional Design Workshops, John Maeda from MIT, the literary work of Ouilpo, dug into Disruptive Technology and Interviewed a CCS alum and former intern who spent time working at studio Edhv and Dutch Invertuals in Eindhoven NL.
We found common threads between the various studios and designers. What I discovered and maybe Luna Maurer said it best. To every design there is a framework or a set of conditions, rules.. if the rules are too constrictive then there isn’t much room for chance or play. If the rules are too loose then there is too much freedom and it lacks structure. This understanding paved the way for our next exploration which is choose a project entirely by chance.
