tried Bread Pizza for the first time, baked it on lower rack in the stovetop oven for 10 mins... apparently I almost burned out the bread lol. Guess I should try the upper rack next time...

also I use raw tomato puree based sauce, turned out it’s pretty much tasteless :x I had added some tomato sauce to my raw pizza sauce for added zing too hmm. also I think the garlic in the sauce mellowed the tomato tho. It tasted so different before I added garlic+onion to the sauce... Anyway, next time I’ll go lighter with the basil and the oregano. Maybe add some stock powder int the pizza sauce for some flavor too hm

The 33 (2010) — survival, based on true story, drama. 33 Chilean miners trapped in a collapsed mine. I like the bits on mining and occupational safety, and mostly watched the rest in 4x playback speed (judging from the first 30 mins or so, I don't <i>feel</i> I missed much from the rest of the movie 😂 )

(also damn, why haven't i thought of watching stuffs in faster speed before? 😂 it's far better than skipping every few secs, I can still skip the less interesting parts while still getting the whole plot)

[crazy rich asian] tbf, idk if it's my mood or the movie is actually just so-so. [[MORE]] Got a few chuckles. Drama is... hm. Basic bitchy bullying (is raw fish gutted really that gross...?). Rich people being absurd just because they can--if it was meant to impress viewer, I just think they're big spender weirdos. The ending is also meh. A sudden change of heart for putting love interest over family? Suuuure. Suddenly the family business doesn't matter at all? The family doesn't mind the business handled over to the... cousins? *shrug*

Notting Hill (1999) - romance drama. Unlikely romance between a book seller and a superstar actress. I watched it mostly on faster playback mode... idk. I thought some popular romcom is a light enough watch for my mood rn but eh too much romance and too little comedy i just mostly felt bored. I like the parts where the actress being real/insecure tho, kinda reminded me of Man who Came from The Star kdrama.

[asoue s2-s3] It still got the same interesting aesthetic and grim story from s1. I feel the two latter seasons got more exciting actions tho. But throughout the series, I often feel weary/frustrated from the bad, rather forced coincidences (well, it IS a series of unfortunate events. what did i expect :/) and the "ineffective" adults (... I'd say they are just too moronic *sigh*).

(also Jacqueline Scieczka just gone, left out from the story like that...? aND LARRY DIDN'T DESERVE THAT PLS!!)

iya kukira ga akan ngisi tag #cooking-hijinks lagi tapi ternyata aku masih ada aja stupitnya :/ kemarin-marin bikin Baked Mac and Cheese, terus loyangnya lupa ga digrease. Mbuh, ngerak nempel parah *crie* ... yha tapi bagian yang ga nempel ke loyang ena-ena aja sih. kalori super sinful udah gausah ditanya 😂 atasnya cheddar parut jadi mengeras gitu rasanya kayak kaastengel lol

so I rarely write in #cooking-hijinks (more like I rarely write anything here), and probably won’t be continuing the tag here. I’ve been cooking often for a while, and I think it’s safe to say my success rate is now around 90% LOL. No more st00pid hijinks-slash-basic-mistake like burning my food while struggling to open the spice container--though, the remaining 10% mistake is still there for the trial-and-error while I’m expanding my cooking repertoire :v Instead, I’ve been collecting recipes and adding my own notes in another blog. And yes, I know there’s website that’s dedicated for recipes like cookpad and allrecipes, but I still like tumblr flexibility best haha. 

that being said, cracking egg and separating yolk is still an elusive art (?) at times I even still find myself cracking the eggshell and the yolk through in one hit, so I won't even bother to try separating egg yolk only using the shell lol. Just bought an egg separator online on the other day, I wonder if it will work well... Though, I read a tip on using your finger as some sort of colander to separate the yolk too. Cheap alternative, but you gotta srsly clean your hand before 😂 I don't really fancy feeling raw egg on my hand, I guess it'll be plan b if i can't get the separator to work well haha.

nyari laundry net, offline susah betul, online asa mahal. Eh kepikiran bisa pake sarung nasi/saringan susu yang bentuk kantong!!! 10k dapet tiga cyinn buat baju atasan nylon gitu muat, apalagi delicates haha muat berapa biji tuh sekantong. paling atasnya tutup aja pake karet gelang, rebes lol

Black pepper beef stir-fry (黑椒牛柳)

Tender and succulent beef strips with a black pepper flavoured sauce, Chinese black pepper beef stir-fry can be made at home to a restaurant standard.

I’ve cooked this recipe twice. The first time I went like, “Oh, there’s soy sauce and sugar. And I have... teriyaki sauce. Meh, they’re pretty much same thing.” Well, except when it’s finished, I got teriyaki stir-fry with black pepper instead lol. The second time I obediently used only soy sauce and oyster sauce, following the recipe down to the T... but it turns out too salty. Dang, it made me salty (lol) I think it’s highly probable that the ABC soy sauce and Saori oyster sauce I have here taste stronger than the writer’s. Like, I’ve already anticipated that I won’t need additional salt and sugar as written in the recipe, but I didn’t anticipate that my sauces are that much saltier :v like, I’ve added baby corn and eggplant but it’s definitely still on the salty side :/ I think it’s most likely the oyster sauce tho--like, the recipe asks for 3 tbsp. Next time I think 1 tbsp will suffice. The soy sauce is just 1 tsp in marinade and 1 tsp in stir-fry sauce anyway, it’s not that much compared to the oyster sauce.

But really tho, the game changer from this recipe is the marinade.

Well, the two times I cooked this recipe, I used chicken breast fillet instead of beef #misqueen. The thing is, I don’t really like chicken breasts. They tend to be dry and tasteless, even in stir fries. The only time I sincerely prefer chicken breast is when my stomach acting up and declared war at the fattier parts like legs and wings lol. 

And then comes this recipe. The marinade calls for several ingredients--I skipped rice wine, I think soy sauce is both for taste and the salt content might help in tenderizing meat, the rest I guess are just aromatics--but the cornstarch, it actually act like a protecting coat against the heat while cooking, making the breast fillet tastes juicier and tastier. Previously I couldn’t create that kind of taste in chicken breast... unless they’re still pink. As in half cooked :v TBH I was seriously tempted to give the finger at bacterial risk and leave breasts half cooked from then on. But with cornstarch marinade, I get similar taste on fully cooked breast. I diced the breast ~1 cm, small enough to easily get dried while cooking, and yet it didn’t. Praise cornstarch! :P

Last, there’s the thing about bell pepper, onion, and black pepper. Idk if it just me, but I think they lose their aroma along with the heating process, so I prefer to add them near the end of cooking. Among the three, bell pepper would be the first to go, since it can infuse some taste to the rest of the food and it need some time to do so. Next is onion--dunno, I just like my onion crunchy with strong aroma like in bentos. Last is black pepper--I prefer not to put too much of this as it can irritate my esophagus but I still love its smell, so I sprinkle a little at the very last, and it smells as strong (or stronger?) than when I put more of it earlier.

Tempe itu aku pernahnya apa lagi ya... dibikin semacam steak? Udah lama, jadi aku juga ga teralu inget. Kalau bumbu sih masih gampang pake bumbu steak instant macam yang jay’s kitchen gitu, sebungkus jadi 2-3 kali makan. Masalahnya tempenya... ya pengolahannya biasa sih, potong-kukus-bejek (?) pake bumbu ama telor iirc, terus panggang. Cuma waktu itu nyampur rosemary kebanyakan gitu jadi baunya kenceng banget sendirian, rasanya kurang enak aja lol.

Btw bumbu steak instant Jay’s ini aink perna rada gagal bikin. Kok bisa sih gagal bikin segitu pake bumbu instant?? Yha. Waktu itu ga merhatiin petunjuk masak, aku masukin air panas ke panci, baru masukin bumbunya. Masalahnya si bumbu ini udah ada pengental (mungkin terigu/maizena) jadi dimasukin ke air panas gitu malah langsung menggumpal, susah nyampur. Mana dia asinnya cenderung kenceng lagi, jadi pas dimakan banyak gumpalan tiba-tiba asin looooool X”D Harusnya ke air dingin, aduk yang bener, baru panasin. Heu. Yodah deh gagal masak sendiri, mamam kegagalan sendiri :v

Tumis Tempe Kecap Manis

Untuk 4 porsi

Sebenernya aku rada jarang makan tempe, soalnya tempe itu harus digoreng, ga bisa dipanggang doang langsung makan--tempenya bakal bau mentah gitu lol. Dioven juga kayak perlu lama... cue emak memonitor pemakaian gas. Kemarin mumpung perutnya lagi mendingan jadi baru coba bikin masakan ini. Masakannya cimpi gampang tapi entah kenapa si emak pun kayaknya ga pernah masak ini.

Kemarin bikin pada dasarnya ikut resep ini. Paling ga pake lengkuas mager nyari di kulkasnya penuh numpuk ga puguh, tiap kali buka kulkas letak barang juga ganti. Sama tambahin saos tomat dikit, ngikut resep lain, plus saos cabe lebih dikit. Pas dicicip sih kuahnya enak. Eh pas disiram ke nasi baru ngeh tempenya mah hampir ga kerasa apa-apa (karena ga direndem garam dulu), mana kuahnya ga bikin begitu banyak. Wkaow oke sip dech X”D Mungkin lain kali perlu tempenya direndem garam. Kuahnya tambahin...? Idk ini tumisan sih hm. Apa disajiinnya dipisah jangan disiram ke nasi kali ya

Aubergine Parmigiana | Vegetables Recipes | Jamie Oliver Recipes

This classic northern Italian recipe is like an aubergine bake and is a great way to serve aubergines; layering them with Parmesan and tomatoes.

Aubergine Parmigiana, or as I call it: “I have bolognaise but no pasta–ooh, I have eggplant, what the hell let’s put it in!”

In the picture I served it with hash brown… and I think the hash brown deserves a post on their own.

tbh it kinda reminds me of childhood? used to eat those fried eggplant with tomato sauce. It’s a funny feeling–not exactly nostalgic in a good way, it’s… closer to a mixed bag, perhaps.

Anyway I cooked just a small amount, (like, I only used 1 small-ish tomato, half tsp basil, half tsp oregano. on a tangential note, regretfully I have to admit the corned beef and 2 tbsp of margarine was rather fatty.) and uh… trying 4 bay leaves? And smol bit of thyme and rosemary. Guess what? It turned out BITTER. X”D

update:

instead of grated cheese, i find spread cheese tastes better. Cheaper cheddar spread like prochiz works good enough for me. I squeezed a dollop on each slice carelessly and let the creamy goodness melt on the sauce/eggplant ♥

Also I added some leftover starfruit -- cut it into little chunks and baked together with everything else, the sour taste mellowed and left a nice touch of sweetness

About brining, I had been doing it with lots of water, since I read the eggplant slices needed to be submerged iirc. Consequently I needed lots of salt, but the result isn’t that salty--all those salt mostly stays in the brining water and thrown away. One time I tried using less water and the brining still worked, plus the eggplant got saltier! Ever since then I use less water for the brining process, even so little like just barely wetting the whole surace of the plate I use is ok.
