Twenty years ago today, Black Male: Representations of Masculinity in Contemporary American Art opened at the Whitney. The exhibition surveyed artists who were interrogating stereotypes of African-American men in painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed-media work from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s.
