tonight i was honored by the town of chapel hill with a proclamation in honor of the 50th anniversary of stonewall and the lgbtq 🏳️‍🌈 community. here was my response: I would like to thank the mayor, the town council, my family and my friends for this recognition. One of the most difficult things that any LGBTQ person can do is to come out and identify themselves as such; to be authentic with yourself, with your family, and your community of friends. It is something we do everyday for the rest of our lives. It is a constant definition of self that evolves as our community accepts us and denies us. We will always defend who we are to ourselves to our friends and to our community. It is not always easy. I moved to Chapel Hill in 1988 to attend the University of North Carolina. One of the best things that was available to me was a supportive community. That is what I cherish most about being here. It was my acceptance by this community that has allowed me to flourish and grow from student to business owner. It is this continued support for not only myself, but the LGBTQ community at large to have had the opportunities and support available to us to flourish and grow here. I'd like to offer my appreciation as representative to the community at large to share our gratitude for this moment. i hope that i do the community proud. thank to @stegman.karen for the nomination.
