Series 10 AU | impossible-gal
Clara eventually pulled away to breathe, and gazed into the Doctor’s eyes. “Marry me,” she said, without seeming to realize she said it aloud.
“I’m sorry?” The Doctor blinked, certain he must have misheard.
“I-“ she hesitated, then decided to plow forward. “I said I want you to marry me. You know, if you want to.”
He stared at her in disbelief, certain she must be joking or playing a trick on him. Still, he couldn’t help the hope rising in his chest. “It’s not nice to play tricks on people, Clara.”
His silence was beginning to make her nervous, but she bit her lip to keep from blurting something out to fill the silence. “It’s no trick, Doctor. What do you need, an engagement ring?” Clara patted her pockets before pulling a simple gold band out of one and held it out to him.
The Doctor sat up, clearly very surprised and a bit confused. “I- why do you have an engagement ring?”
“Couldn’t wait around forever for you to propose, right?” She gave a shrug. “The real question should be how long have I been carrying around a ring for you.”
“And…what’s the answer to that question?”
“Since before Trap Street. I had wanted to ask you that day when we were in the second most beautiful garden in the universe, but then that sentient plant wanted to marry you, and I had to rescue you. Never got a chance after that.” Clara smiled sadly. “All these years I wondered why I was still hanging onto it, but I always had hope I’d be able to give it to you.”
The Doctor gazed at her, stroking her cheek gently. “I’m sorry. But thank you. For keeping it. Yes, I will marry you.”
She smiled with actual joy now and leaned forward to kiss him. “I love you.”
He kissed her for a moment and then stood up, pulling her with him. “Clara!”
