for a moment, lock’s shoulders tense at the shrill of the redhead’s voice. he feels like he’s somehow been caught redhanded ... though, for what it is this time he has absolutely no fucking idea. hah ! he snickers at the explanation. “ shock said that, huh ? do you believe everything shock tells you ? ”

she placed the vase on the counter as she gripped onto the table top behind her. she opened her mouth, trying to come up with something to say but nothing came out. “she is not my mother,” she spoke, her green eyes flickering towards the boy in her shop. “can you try and be a little more sensitive about this?”

" yeesh, fine, so she’s not your mother. no need to be so damn testy about it. what’s there to be sensitive about anyways ? it’s not like she’s gonna try to kidnap you again. that’d be a bit redundant, don’t you think ? unless you’re worried your parents are going to beg for her to take you back or some shit. can you say plot twist. ”

in light of all the whispers and rumors that had swirled around the man for ages, lock was actually pretty surprised to see the ‘beast’ out in public. lock, shock, and barrel had grown up with the spooky stories about him and he couldn’t even tell you how many times they’d walked by the ashman mansion in hundred acre woods as children. they’d dared each other, and played chicken — who could make it furthest onto the estate without being seen ? ding, dong, ditch was even a halloween favorite for awhile. “ yeah, not really. hey, i thought you were a hermit. ”

MARIE.

Marie settled on to her bed, head resting against white pillows and phone in her hand. She had dimmed the lights and let a random playlist fill the silence in her room. Duchess and her brothers were out for the night so Marie had the whole spacious house to herself. She couldn’t have been happier. Just her, Darling, and a bottle of wine she snuck from her mother’s collection. She was one glass in when she heard the soft creak of the stairs. Marie pulled her cat close to her chest and shifted to sit up in the bed. The door open and a sigh of relief left her lips shortly followed by annoyance. Lock. What little she had set gave the room highlighted his devilish features. She must have forgot to lock the front door when she got home 

The white fluff ball of a cat hissed. Darling left her owners clutch and nestled herself between the brunette and blonde. Blue eyes glaring at the shadow in the doorway. “Could you not call before breaking in?”

“ could’ve, but didn’t feel like it. 'sides, it‘s not my fault your family’s security system is a piece of garbage, ” he tells her, almost disappointed that getting into the bonfamille home wasn’t even the slightest bit of a challenge. with all that actually goes bump in the night — even in this town — you’d think that those in carthay would know better. stupid fuckin’ rich people, he thinks, making a quick mental note of the find and reminding himself to shoot zarina hendricks a text as soon as he was done here. he steps closer, locking the door behind him before he hisses back at the feline. he couldn’t stand the furball — so much so that he’s contemplated throwing it out the window more than once during his late night visits. 

“ so, what’s it going to be, princess. you gonna call cpd on me or are you going to do us both a favor and make some room ? ”

“you might have a dad, but could you even consider him one if he’s not even around? suppose it’s to each their own,” she said using his own words against him. “how do you even know where i live? now you’re the creep but new holland is where you belong,” she spoke calmly even though the girl spent a good amount of her time there anyways. “but yeah, good thing you don’t live there, doesn’t seem like you’d survive. all the business suits and brief cases? god, it must be like the apocalypse for you. poor thing,” she said tilting her head just before he took the box from her. “hey!” the smaller girl couldn’t help but reach out after him, knowing it wasn’t going to do any good. “i don’t have to tell you anything, you didn’t earn the right! and quit with the nicknames, they’re getting redundant.” 

“ he stays out my buisness, i stay out of his. if you ask me, its the perfect relationship. i wouldn’t try to understand it, though. i mean ... i wouldn’t expect someone without one to understand our dynamics and you’ll probably just hurt yourself tryin’. ” he barks a laugh. “ because i’ve been there. seen you. full offense, but you’re a bit of an eyesore in that strawberry garb. ” the apocalpyse ? his ears perk. now this was something he could talk about. “ oh, fuck off, pip. that shits not a joking matter, y’know. i’ll actually be surviving the apocalypse unlike the rest of this shithole of a town. do you even know what a bugout bag is ?? ” he stretches an arm out between them, holding the box further away. he nearly drops it before he manages to steady it again. ” redundant. that’s a mighty big word for a child. how ‘bout this ? i’ll stop with ‘em, if you tell me. simple, right ? ”

“i know just as much as you do about me, creep. and yeah, i don’t have a dad… so what? loads of people don’t have dads,” she replied back, not letting his words get to her. she knew all he did was talk, his words didn’t mean anything to her. her eyebrows raised, wondering if that was all he’s going to throw at her. everyone knew she didn’t have a dad, it wasn’t news to the blonde. “well i’m glad to be the first, seems like you need to hear it. so if you don’t mind,” the girl picked up the box that she had previously set down. “i’ll just be off being bug-eyed somewhere. ”

“ sure. i mean even i have a dad, but to each their own. ayways, ‘m from new holland, pip. creepy’s our middle name. but since you’re calling yourself a creep ... maybe a change of address is in order ? corona hills is whack as fuck, anyways. what with their lame ass sidewalk appeals and all those 401(k)s, ” lock shudders at the thought. he’s quick to step in front of her, prying the box from her hands and moving it behind his back, just out of her reach. “ uh uh, “ he tuts, “ not so fast, buggy. you’ve yet to tell me what these are for. go on. ”

almost dropping the vase she was holding, the girl couldn’t quite believe her ears and what rung worse was that he called gothel her mother. “first off, she’s not my mother and second… what do you mean, got out?” 

“ got out. as in ... got out. you know ... left the slammer. the lockup. the cooler. prison. and yeah ... your mother. crazy raised you, didn’t she ? ain’t that shit practically the same ? ‘course it doesn’t sound like she did a very good job. do i need to further define what prison is for ya ?yeesh. ”

she was hardly challenged by anyone in this town, not one single person noticed her other than people that knew her as the daughter of the queen bee at city hall and atta. narrowing her eyes, she couldn’t help but scoff. “well at least someone is, not even your parents seem to be interested,” she dug at him. listening to his words, she grimaced in disgust. “wow, just blasting someone for their physical features, what a dick move. random thought? do you act like a royal douche because no one takes the time to notice anything about you?” 

“ you know ‘em, do you ? kind of funny since you don’t know you’re own pops, huh, ” the smirk on his lips is clear as he counters, his chuckle low. if she looks close enough, she might even see that there’s a g l e a m of wickedness flickering within his dark eyes. it’s dangerous — a warning for most, but there’s something innocent about the tiny blonde that keeps him talking, waiting for her to take the bait. “ mm ... ” he pretends to think, exaggerating with a purse of his lips before shrugging his shoulders. “ nah, just a douche. but royal ? haven’t heard that one today. ”

BARREL.

“lock, open the door, dude!” he speaks through the door, rattling the handle. sometimes, being the youngest sibling means being the resident annoyance. that’s just the way it is. barrel and lock have always had a strange dynamic— their friendship and sense of brotherhood being a little lopsided. unbalanced. still, this never stops barrel from making his way to lock’s room every day once he gets home from school, looking for someone to just hang out with. doing so was a nice break from oogie’s assignments. “am i really that annoying?”

annoyed, lock finally rolls off of his bed and yanks his earbuds from his ear, music tearing loudly through the mess of his room. it’s only a few quick strides to his door, though, and he swears if barrel rattles that handle one more time he’s pushing him down the stairs the very second he gets to him. “ yes, dumbass. if you must know you are. so, what the fuck d’ya want ? ” he asks once he’s finally swung the door open. “ and where the hell is shock ?  go bother her or something. ‘m busy. ”

“this town consists all of five people. it’s not hard to keep tabs on someone who self labels themselves as a snake or a troublemaker. it seems like no one cares enough about you to even call you bad,” she spoke, her blue eyes narrowing at his, just trying to stand her ground. she might be small but she never let anyone walk on her, that she didn’t stand for. “like i said, you gave those names to yourself, it doesn’t mean anything coming from you. people know me just fine,” she said crossing her arms over her chest, hating how he saw the shadow casted on her by her own family. scoffing a bit, she knew she couldn’t let that get to her. “maybe they do,” she owned it because if she did, then he wouldn’t have the power over her. “do people know you apart from your siblings? or are you just one thirds a person? cause right now, your schtick isn’t really coloring me interested.” 

lock considers pointing out that he’s been called much, much worse than snake and troublemaker, let alone bad, but he’s growing increasingly bored with what she think she knows, choosing instead to let it slide. this time. “ eh. don’t care if you’re interested, ” he remarks all too flippantly. he’s amused by the way she defensively crosses her arms over her chest, though, because for someone who’s claimed people know her just fine, she doesn’t seem very confident in the words she’s spewing. “ shit, i have a shtick ? who knew. hah ! random thought ... anyone ever told you that you have really big fucking bug eyes like ... you related to jack skellington in any way ? i’m kinda seeing a resemblance here. ”
